AIBU - I've said to the DD's they can only go for a walk with a parent present

I'm officially the worst parent EVAH. But when they came with me for a walk yesterday, they were being complete and utter twats about social distancing, not taking care to stay 2m away from other people. It was so frustrating, they're smart kids, but really not getting just how dangerous this is, how they might be fine, but they could be carriers and give it to us and other people.

Yanbu. I wouldn’t let dc out on their own at the moment either I although I normally do.

HasaDigaEebowai · 27/03/2020 12:39

Very sensible. Given that they are only allowed out once anyway I'm not sure why it would be done any other way

Washyourhandsyoufilthyanimal · 27/03/2020 12:40

I’m seeing so many groups of teenagers so I think you’re right.

Devlesko · 27/03/2020 12:42

I'm seeing groups of teenagers, and parent with 2 kids out, very irresponsible.
Two people only not three, we'd all love a family walk, but some are responsible. Take one of them out, only.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 27/03/2020 12:44

Devlesko you are being absurd.

Many parents have to work all day & juggle childcare & do not have time to take each child separately . It is acceptable for all members of the same household to go out together.

Love51 · 27/03/2020 12:46

Devlesko I can take both of my kids out! They are members of my household. I could even do a family walk with my DH and 2 kids as we all live together. We don't have to stay 2 metres from each other, just anyone else we may pass.

WorraLiberty · 27/03/2020 12:47

Because families don't have to exercise together.

You're right OP. If they won't social distance, you'll have to enforce it.

Jammydodger1981 · 27/03/2020 12:47

@Devlesko it’s no more than two unrelated people, you’re allowed to go out in household groups

Lolly86 · 27/03/2020 12:48

It's ok for a family that are in same household to exercise together whether that's 3 of you or 6

WorraLiberty · 27/03/2020 12:49

Devlesko taking one out daily, would be completely irresponsible if it can be avoided Confused

The less trips outside, the better.

Devlesko · 27/03/2020 12:49

Whoops, huge apologies.
Thought I was on top of the rules, missed that completely.
I'm going to make dd and dh go for a walk with me later.
Ignore my absurdness. I've even tutted as I've seen more than 2 people walking together, what a wally Blush

AmIAWeed · 27/03/2020 12:49

I'm not letting my daughter out I know her friend down the road has 2 keyworker parents in work and I suspect she would go their house - also, when we have walked as a family I've had to tell her to cross the road to allow people space. She wouldn't otherwise.
My son however would like to go for a run and I trust he would follow the rules so he is being allowed

Washyourhandsyoufilthyanimal · 27/03/2020 12:49

I think you’ve got this wrong. You are allowed two or more people out of you are from the same household- otherwise this wild discriminate against lone parents. They wouldn’t be able to leave one child at home while they took one out.

BJ clearly said you can go out in groups of more than 2 if you are from the same household.

Quartz2208 · 27/03/2020 12:51

you are allowed a family walk as long as they are members of your household

OP I would go with them

WorraLiberty · 27/03/2020 12:52

tiredanddangerous · 27/03/2020 12:55

Yanbu. I wouldn’t let my 12 year old go for a walk on her own at the moment.

Devlesko · 27/03/2020 12:56

Worra

I feel a right idiot. I'm not a curtain twitcher but we live across from the towns major park, and an out patients. We have huge windows, so as I've looked up I've been having a right old tutt, and a rant about how it will never be gone. Feel a right dick now.

TheGinSoakedBoy · 27/03/2020 12:56

I've told my kids that BoJo mentioned no under 18's without a parent. They are capable of socail distancing but I'm utterly paranoid. Luckily they've not questioned it. It's a fine line between telling them the facts and terrifying them. I'm with you OP.

mbosnz · 27/03/2020 12:59

They've been so good about this in so many ways, very uncomplaining. I just feel rather beaten down, which is silly. But I'd rather be the worst/dumbest/most over the top ridiculous parent in the world and keep them, us, and everybody else safe. Sad. There's not enough Wine in the world at the moment, is there?!

Washyourhandsyoufilthyanimal · 27/03/2020 12:59

@Devlesko at least you can laugh at yourself!

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 27/03/2020 13:01

I think we've all been a right dick at least once during this whole covid debacle devlesko

mencken · 27/03/2020 13:03

correct. The 2 person limit does not apply to family groups. Kids need to stay close and supervised, and AWAY from everyone else. If you aren't there they will dick about, and as all kids are high risk of infection they could actually kill someone.

ignore whinging, remove gadgets if it continues (they can read a book) and be prepared to yell. The rest of us thank you for keeping your kids under control.

mbosnz · 27/03/2020 13:15

They're not whinging. They have retreated to their rooms to have a sulk/process this latest unpleasant turn of events.

gettingusedtothelimelight · 27/03/2020 13:17

How old are they?

mbosnz · 27/03/2020 13:19

16 and 14. They don't have to like it. They just have to accept it. Which they are.
