Ocado are suspending their reserved order system

Neednewwellies · 26/03/2020 16:28

I’ve been using Ocado for 12yrs. We pay extra for a reserved pass. A week or so ago they emailed to say existing customers were priority and especially those with a reserved slot. Made a thing about supporting loyalty etc. Now today I’ve received an email telling me that not only is the delivering expecting tomorrow not coming but they’ve decided to suspend the reserved slots and it’s every (wo)man for themselves. Of course, there’s no slot available for weeks.
I’m angry and worried. Why not continue to prioritise those who have a set slot. Surely adding those thousands into the traffic of people desperately trying to get a slot will just make the situation worse? As soon as this is over I’ll be leaving them. No way will I continue to pay extra when they’ve behaved like this. How can they leave it until the day before to drop this on us? £150 a week plus the monthly fast pass fee to be treated like this. I wouldn’t even mind if they were on twitter holding their hands up but they’ve gone silent.

I have just received an email saying that as I am on the governments extremely vulnerable list I can now have a slot every 2 weeks...that's very kind Mr Ocado but I pay for an anytime smart pass and have been a 10+ years customer so looks like I cannot book anytime. I could understand 1 a week but every 2 weeks?? I have been in isolation with my family for 3 weeks and have a few months to go at least and have to feed everyone. I am not asking for anything for free, just what I pay for and maybe a bit of understanding that we are locked in the bloody house, not for a week or two but for over 3 bloody months!!

Anyway Tesco beat you to it Ocado and had updated their list of vulnerable customers 2 days ago and offered me a weekly slot...Bye Bye Ocado 👋

MotherOfDragonite · 04/04/2020 17:01

They've sent me an email saying I can have an order every 7 days. I'm an Anytime smart pass holder of 10+ years -- but it sounds like some of you are too, and you've been told different things.

I have also noticed that their prices have gone up considerably. There are no special offers whatsoever.

I have booked my next slot for my mum, who is vulnerable and can't get out, but I'm going to be looking locally for other delivery services as they are looking good value in comparison to Ocado and at least one can order deliveries and know when to expect them. Plenty of options here in London including Natoora, Pale Green Dot, Camden Grocer, HQF, the new Crosstown box, etc.

I feel like this could have been a really good opportunity for Ocado to show themselves in the best possible light, but they've wasted it and pissed off their longest standing customers -- without actually stepping up for vulnerable new customers either. Poor show!

I have also noticed that their prices have gone up considerably.

I noticed that. I did a fairly normal shop, albeit for one extra adult. Was at least £40-50 more than it normally would be.

No deals, no offers (or where there are it is hard to get a complete offer anyway) and a lot of the home brand stuff isn't available. Things such as pasta the only way to get any is to order some of the most expensive brands they sell.

MotherOfDragonite · 04/04/2020 18:28

It's actually looking cheaper to order a 'gourmet' veg & sundries box locally and top up from the deli! I may continue to do that if they don't start pricing more competitively again.

Beansandcoffee · 04/04/2020 18:35

Tesco have stopped my DD for their pass. Can’t get slot at all. Went to the local store, no special offers etc and prices wow. I’ve ordered a fruit and veg box from a local company would rather support small businesses to be honest.

PowerslidePanda · 04/04/2020 20:56

On the increased prices - what happened to their "low price promise" thing, where they'd compare your shopping to Tesco and give you a refund for the difference? That seems to have quietly disappeared at the time all of this kicked off!

Redglitter · 04/04/2020 22:38

Itll be because at the moment theres no incentive for them to be competitive. The usual offers are to entice you to use them or to get you to stay. They know at the moment demand is far exceeding supply so they could in effect charge what they like

Ceara · 05/04/2020 08:15

I am pleased that they are prioritising vulnerable customers

But they aren't, not really. After weeks of talking about prioritising the "elderly and vulnerable", they aren't even using that language any more. They are only prioritising those on the government's "extremely vulnerable" list who they HAVE to prioritise, and then only if the admin has worked. But the elderly and the otherwise "merely" vulnerable have been thrown under a bus by Ocado in order to prioritise their bigger spenders. They're prioritising the lucrative not the vulnerable.

My father (late 70s, kidney disease, heart condition, hypertension, asthma but not on the extremely vulnerable list) hasn't been favoured with priority access - in effect, told to piss off and go to the shops with everyone else. Same for my mother (late 70s, vision problems). They don't have anytime passes and they don't spend enough to have made the grade for priority access. Despite having identified as elderly and vulnerable to the contact centre several weeks ago and been assured Ocado would be trying to help.

There are also plenty of people who use Ocado week in week out because of health conditions which aren't themselves a specific Covid-19 vulnerability, but make accessing physical shops nigh on impossible even at the best of times. These people also seem to have been thrown under the bus if they didn't make the cut for priority access because of their spending patterns.

Unfortunately many of the "vulnerable or elderly" (but not "extremely vulnerable") won't be Ocado's biggest spenders, due to household size. As they're not on the government list Ocado have been able to quietly ditch them while continuing to make pious noises.

I've been given the lowest grade of priority access by Ocado (a once a week look for any leftover slots in the next 4 days). Clearly I am one of their "not really loyal enough" customers despite having shopped weekly with them for years as I "only" spend around the £90-100 mark and don't bother with an Anytime pass. So it's unlikely I will be able to get any slots to give to my parents, as I'm only being allowed to access the crumbs left by the "most loyal" ie biggest spenders.

I wouldn't mind if they were helping the vulnerable. But they're only helping those who the government is forcing them to help. Not good enough, Ocado.

I will take any random slots I am able to get, to help my parents out, but my "clearly not really good enough for Ocado anyway" custom will be going to Waitrose or Sainsburys, who have both tried harder for the elderly and vulnerable, when all this is over.

Standrewsschool · 05/04/2020 09:21

Just checked my emails. It says I can start looking for slots from tuesday. However, I already have one booked on. 24th April (booked last week, only day available), so I’m not sure how that will affect things.

mooboy · 05/04/2020 11:03

On the increased prices - what happened to their "low price promise" thing I the four years I have been shopping with them, they have either quietly ignored me (like they are doing now - still haven't received an email from them - thankfully they are finding my house every week) or they have never been more expensive than Tesco - which is it do you think? I going with the former!

Ellmau · 05/04/2020 11:07

They've sent me an email saying I can have an order every 7 days. I'm an Anytime smart pass holder of 10+ years -- but it sounds like some of you are too, and you've been told different things.

It might be affected by what area you're in and how many slots/customers they have there.

penisbeakers · 05/04/2020 21:50

I'm immunocompromised and really do not want to have to go to a supermarket in person, but at this point I don't think I'm going to have much choice. I can't get a slot anywhere, nor click and collect. Even if I could get click and collect, I can't drive, and I don't want to risk being in a taxi either.

So I expect I'm going to mask and glove up, and go put myself at risk in Asda. Go me.

MotherOfDragonite · 06/04/2020 09:07

@penisbeakers, before you do that, have you looked up Covid-19 Mutual Aid groups in your area? They are networks of volunteers who are happy to help people who need it. Certainly in my area they are very active and helpful with shopping for people with health conditions that make it risky to go out. In my area there is also a local WhatsApp group and the city councillor has given her mobile number out and is arranging food parcels from the council.

Beansandcoffee · 06/04/2020 11:14

Penis breaker I agree with poster above. I’ve volunteered in my area on a covid19 team to get vulnerable people’s shopping. Also your local authority ie district council or try parish council have organised hubs to get shopping etc. If you message me your council I can get the info for you.

caperberries · 06/04/2020 11:22

I have also noticed that their prices have gone up considerably. There are no special offers whatsoever.

I got an email saying I could book a slot once every two weeks - 13 days apart. I've added 2 weeks' worth of shopping to my next order & it's come in at £450!? The prices have definitely gone up.

FlamingoAndJohn · 06/04/2020 11:50

Have prices gone up or is it the lack of offers?

caperberries · 06/04/2020 11:55

Both

FlamingoAndJohn · 06/04/2020 11:59

About prices going up.

I’ve just gone to an old order from January and chosen four items that I know I had in my last delivery.
The prices have stayed the same for all of them (hot chocolate, tinned tomatoes, mozzarella, passata), except the passata which has dropped by 30p.

caperberries · 06/04/2020 12:11

Flamingo I've just done the same, choosing a few items at random from my order on 23/01/20 and comparing prices today:

Soupologie Detox Boost Soup Spirulina Greens 600g was £2.50 - now £2.99

Alpro Almond yoghurt was £1.60 - still £1.60

New York Bagels was £1.25 - now £1.65

Berryworld blackberries was £1.50 - now £3.00

Beansandcoffee · 06/04/2020 13:36

Soft fruit has really gone up in price

FlamingoAndJohn · 06/04/2020 14:06

Black berries will have gone up in price because they are out of season.

caperberries · 06/04/2020 14:16

Erm, they were out of season in January, too.. They are grown in greenhouses.

bruffin · 06/04/2020 14:17

New York Bagels was £1.25 - now £1.65
New york bagels are always around £1.65 but they are usually 2 for £2.50 . The special offers have disappeared same with the Berryworld stuff, they usually have a 2 for £4.00 i think offer.

alloutoffucks · 06/04/2020 14:19

Yes food prices have gone up. I suspect it is because most people are no longer prepared to shop around. I know I used to buy food from a few different shops, but not any more.

Xenia · 06/04/2020 14:19

My son delivers this stuff. The company is doing all it can and the drivers are working flat out (and are getting a 10% bonus I believe). It is a very difficult situation although if I were a food delivery company I would be looking to recruit masses more staff and ramping up deliveries as fast as possible to meet the demand.

We have to go out to buy food which always feels a bit risky.
