Aibu to cry over the NHS volunteer army?

I’m more emotional about this whole situation than I had realised.

250,000 have volunteered already. Aren’t these people just bloody wonderful? For every wee arsehole that refuses to comply with lockdown thinking they are the exception, there are more good people out there doing their bit and looking to do even more.

Three cheers for the volunteers and thank you all so much! 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻

Talking about arsoles, 9% think you are being unreasonable to being emotional over the amount of volunteering!

mbosnz · 25/03/2020 13:21

I've got the phrase, 'as ye give so shall ye receive' going through my mind. Or not. So to speak.

thereisfreedomwithin · 25/03/2020 13:25

I feel guilty now because I've volunteered chiefly because it will give me an excuse to get out of the house ....

underneaththeash · 25/03/2020 13:26

I'm just glad I can finally do something useful (apart from the homeschooling and supporting DH and my au pair who are key workers).

GrumpyHoonMain · 25/03/2020 13:31

People who choose to work as doctors / nurses / midwives etc do it because they want to help people. That desire doesn’t go away just because they retire or leave the NHS. But I do think the NHS needs to be responsible about this - especially with the over 60s. Full medical tests should be undertaken and anyone with high risk pre-existing conditions should be refused.

feelingverylazytoday · 25/03/2020 13:31

Wish I could volunteer, but I'm a full time carer. Well done to everyone who has.

lazarusb · 25/03/2020 13:32

Dh has volunteered as he's had to close his business. He's fit and well, has a car and it will do him good to stay occupied and help people out a it.

I'm working from home and both children are studying online from home.

Cosmos45 · 25/03/2020 13:33

I volunteered today and just waiting for identity check approval. What a great initiative. I work from home anyhow so hoping I will be able to pop out when required and work around work so to speak.

ineedaholidaynow · 25/03/2020 13:35

@Devlesko are you self sufficient then? Produce your own electricity, water?

I haven’t volunteered under this scheme but I am already doing shopping and picking up medication for a number of elderly neighbours. I am also a volunteer for a number of organisations that are battling on at the moment, so like to think I am doing my bit for the community.

Bumpsadaisie · 25/03/2020 13:35

It's brilliant that people who themselves must isolate can find a way to play a part if they're healthy.

NewYearNewJob123 · 25/03/2020 13:37

Calm down.

A huge amount of applicants will be from people who don't actually want to do a thing at all but like to say they volunteered.

BigChocFrenzy · 25/03/2020 13:38

"Volunteer if you want to, and I'll think you stupid if I want to.
My dd has asked, I've said under no conditions.
Take the virus home to kill you and your family, no skin off my nose.
It's survival of the fittest and natural selection"

You should tell the NHS staff who are risking their lives that you & your family don't want medical care

because you believe in natural selection

justasking111 · 25/03/2020 13:39

My cousin and his wife both retired nurses have volunteered. God bless them both.

BigChocFrenzy · 25/03/2020 13:40

"A huge amount of applicants" will be from people who can and will help
Well done them 👏🏼

Some pp here can only sneer at the thought of doing something for the community instead of just themselves

CoffeeHere · 25/03/2020 13:43

We value family above everything else

No shit

MrsJoshNavidi · 25/03/2020 13:44

DH has volunteered.

I work for a building society and have volunteered to help with the mahoosive rise in the number of people applying for mortgage holidays. From the low hundreds per week to tens of thousands in 4 days.

thereisfreedomwithin · 25/03/2020 13:44

It's nice that you are moved OP but I would focus on care workers - that's real heroism IMO.

The NHS tasks are useful but they are low-key, safe, and get us out of the house!

NewYearNewJob123 · 25/03/2020 13:45

Yep and that's great. But unlikely they'll be called on.

It's a precautionary measure just in case. No need for anyone to cry about it.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 25/03/2020 13:45

I’m in Scotland and desperate to volunteer. I work and have kids so have offered weekends.

I think we have all had the virus so hope they can test the population generally so that those who have had it can help those who have not

SoupDragon · 25/03/2020 13:49

You should tell the NHS staff who are risking their lives that you & your family don't want medical care because you believe in natural selection

Absolutely.

Lollygaggles · 25/03/2020 13:49

I've signed up to check up with folks over the phone. I feel like I have to give something back no matter how small.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 25/03/2020 13:50

That "chat and check in" sounds a good scheme too, loveyou.

We're doing something similar via out church. Tere are so many people on their own, with no support, and it's easy to get lonely and frightened in this situation.

FredaFrogspawn · 25/03/2020 13:51

Most people do like to be useful.its a great way of getting through what will be a difficult few months. We generally need to feel needed. Well done the volunteers.

SneezyMcSneezeface · 25/03/2020 13:52

's mostly delivering shopping and medicine. Bit misleading to link it to NHS‘

I disagree, it’s helping out with a caring role that NHS staff or link caring staff would have to do. And I don’t care what it’s called if I can help.
I’ll be driving medicines and equipment from site to site.

dottiedodah · 25/03/2020 13:52

New YearNewjob123 Well my Aunt and Uncle who are in their late 70s and early 80s, are extremely grateful to their Neighbours ,who have set up a sort of "Neighbourhood Watch" for one younger person to help an older one .They Email or phone and ask for groceries ,medication and so on .The person leaves it on their step for them to pick up .
