I’m more emotional about this whole situation than I had realised.

250,000 have volunteered already. Aren’t these people just bloody wonderful? For every wee arsehole that refuses to comply with lockdown thinking they are the exception, there are more good people out there doing their bit and looking to do even more.

Three cheers for the volunteers and thank you all so much! 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻

I've volunteered, I work in our business but as it's so quiet at the minute I have time on my hands. My DS (18) has had his exams cancelled so is also going to volunteer.

Port1aCastis · 25/03/2020 12:38

I've volunteered to deliver food as in leave on doorsteps as I want to help some people, if selfish people hadn't rammed supermarkets full like walking petrie dishes praps things wouldn't be quite so bad.

Sugarfreejelly · 25/03/2020 12:38

Can you sign up specifically to do the check and chat? I’d love to do this and I’m limited as to what else I can do due to having asthma and a young child also with asthma).

FeelingCrap54 · 25/03/2020 12:39

I have volunteered. I am healthy and far from stupid. I will be able to do any of the roles suggested while socially isolating

They had 170.000 sign up yesterday and the rest this morning.

Ready and willing to do my bit.

Boopear · 25/03/2020 12:40

I've volunteered as well. Why on earth would they be "lying" about it? What a warped world view!

FeelingCrap54 · 25/03/2020 12:40

@Sugarfreejelly yes you can.

Boopear · 25/03/2020 12:41

And you can sign up just to do check and chat Smile

Port1aCastis · 25/03/2020 12:43

Yes you can sign up just to make phone calls I think all help will be gratefully received.

Devlesko · 25/03/2020 12:50

A 21 year old has died with no underlying conditions.
Volunteer if you want to, and I'll think you stupid if I want to.
My dd has asked, I've said under no conditions.
Take the virus home to kill you and your family, no skin off my nose.
It's survival of the fittest and natural selection, I suppose that means at least those isolating will be ok, hopefully.

gypsywater · 25/03/2020 12:52

@devlesko your dd is really lucky to have such a lovely lady for a mother Wink

IndecentFeminist · 25/03/2020 12:52

DH has volunteered, he's off out now to collect and deliver prescriptions.

I'm not supposed to apparently as I'm a key worker in school.

Makeitgoaway · 25/03/2020 12:54

I hope you're not using any supermarkets and your doctor doesn't take that view Devlesko. How do you propose we get the supplies to the NHS and the people who need them?

Devlesko · 25/03/2020 12:54

gypsy

I call a spade a spade. We are Romany and self isolated long before asked to do so.
We value family above everything else and wouldn't put a family members life at risk because some idiots crammed the supermarkets.
They are the ones that we are hearing the sirens for now.

Thorilicious · 25/03/2020 12:54

I've volunteered. I'm at home with my 2 boys under the age of 7, so I've volunteered for the chat part. I feel like I'm able to do something to help.

Boopear · 25/03/2020 12:56

@devlesko You could always volunteer to do a phone check and chat. The virus doesn't travel down the phone lines..

pollyhampton · 25/03/2020 12:56

Ffs Devlesko, so you are even against no contact volunteering like phone calls and deliveries? Your daughter could speak to someone on the phone and make a difference.

SoupDragon · 25/03/2020 13:02

We value family above everything else

Well, let's hope you don't need any help.

Ginkypig · 25/03/2020 13:03

I would have loved to have been able to volunteer for such a needed service/s but I'm disabled and they specifically were asking for people in good health but instead I'm helping a couple of elderly neighbors with shopping (adding bits on to my online delivery) and calling a couple of others and also my vulnerable family members really regularly to make sure they are getting to talk to someone as they can't have people in the house. I hope that's at least something, I would have liked to have been able to do more though.

I'm hoping that me doing my personal small bit, other people doing their small bits plus the official volunteers and organisations that are reaching out to people in certain circumstances that most people will feel that someone is around when they need them.

Dinoctoblock · 25/03/2020 13:13

Any word if Scotland’s going to do this? I think my DH might like to do this.

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 25/03/2020 13:13

I could do the chat thing... are there guidelines about what happens if the person on the other end is not well/needs something etc? DH post-chemo so don't want to do the shopping/delivery etc - and tbf it's hard enough getting our own food at the mo.

Bipbopbee · 25/03/2020 13:14

I’ve volunteered for the chat service too... if it helps just one person’s mental health then that’s at least something.

nannybeach · 25/03/2020 13:14

Great idea, I saw it in the paper, but it appears you have to have a mobile phone, to take pictures of documents, and ID. I am looking out for neighbour in his 80s about quarter of a mile away.He also doesnt have a mobile or internet

nannybeach · 25/03/2020 13:15

I started out as a vonunteer before I started nursing.
