To think we shouldn’t be buying clothes etc just now unless absolutely necessary

One of my favourite shops has a sale. Quite a lot off. I’ve recieved a couple of texts from friends and my husband told me about the sale.

Much as I love a bargain, I feel that if I buy something I’m contributing to putting someone’s life at risk (those working in the warehouse, delivery driver etc). DH thinks I would be helping folk keep a job.

YABU - you should still buy clothes etc and contribute to the economy

YANBU - clothes are not a necessity and these places should be encouraged to close at this time

Really tough, I can’t decide.

Thehop · 25/03/2020 11:34

I’ve seen so many posts about the conditions for warehouse workers I can’t contribute to it.

Aside from the fact I daren’t spend any money.

GrandTheftWalrus · 25/03/2020 11:35

My dd is starting to grow out of her clothes so I will need to buy her new ones. But I'd rather shop online than go to a shop.

Tootletum · 25/03/2020 11:35

The people who make the clothes in Bangladesh will starve if all the big companies pull orders. So yes maybe a small risk to warehouse packers, but a much bigger more immediately risk to the poorest in the world. Also my kids are actually growing out of things and I didn't do the summer shop. So I will be placing an order.

lubeybooby · 25/03/2020 11:35

I've ordered stuff, firmly of the belief that delivery drivers are key workers and need their jobs and that shops offering online delivery should be encouraged as a safer way of contributing to the economy

Dylaninthemovies1 · 25/03/2020 11:36

@GrandTheftWalrus in my case I don’t actually ‘need’ clothes at this moment.

OP posts:
Frankiecandle · 25/03/2020 11:36

I'll need bigger clothes due to eating too much and the supermarket only having cake on the selves. Plus only allowed out for one state sanctioned walk a day.

dollyknocker · 25/03/2020 11:36

I have been feeling the same, however agreed to order my daughter a skirt a few days ago. It arrived by Hermes yesterday and the delivery guy was easily in his late 60s or early 70s, wearing a plasterer's mask and rubber gloves just to try to keep himself safe, so it has made my mind up that I wont be ordering anything else. Poor guy should be at home.

Sux2buthen · 25/03/2020 11:37

My 1 year old is growing out of her onesies and I'll have to replace. I'm compiling a list of what we need and try to do it in one hit while not spending a lot.

Her0utdoors · 25/03/2020 11:40

It's a vary straightforward choice. Expect others to put them selves at risk for things I want, or keep what I'm buying to a minimum to lower the risk for everyone and inebuy the bare essentials.

Vectura · 25/03/2020 11:41

If the store is Karen Millen I’m having the same quandary!

My instinct says no but I also want to support them? Hmmm

islandislandisland · 25/03/2020 11:43

I just can't bring myself to, it seems so frivolous at a time like this. Also thinking of the warehouse and delivery staff and what they must think delivering parcels of unnecessary things like clothes to people.

Vectura · 25/03/2020 11:43

@dollyknocker that’s made my mind up! I’ve not had anyone like that delivering but I wouldn’t forgive myself if they did.

I need a new coat as I lost mine two weeks ago but realistically....no, I don’t need a new coat, I’ve not left the house in 6 days.

Feel awful for the delivery drivers Sad

Iwantacookie · 25/03/2020 11:50

I agree op on one hand were told to keep online shopping but on the other why put more people at risk just for a new top.
We need a few bits of underwear, socks so I'm trying to save up all the clothes we need then buy in bulk.
I am thankful primark havent changed to online for this time only though. Ide be broke Grin

Marlboroandmalbec34 · 25/03/2020 11:54

I’m so glad you asked. I would like to order some compost and plants and craft bits for the kids but I don’t want more warehouse staff or delivery drivers working unless they need to. I voted Yanbu as I think we need as many non essentials workers to stay home

Somerville · 25/03/2020 11:55

Recession will become depression if those who can afford to stop spending. YABU.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 25/03/2020 11:59

I've just bought some skincare items online.Im grateful that online shops are open for the time being.

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 25/03/2020 12:00

I ummed and ahhed about doing a B&Q order to get paint, compost and plants, as I have some annual leave coming up in the lockdown period. But I have decided I'd rather not put additional pressure on the order pickers and delivery staff. My house and garden have looked shite for ages anyway, a few more months won't make a difference.

MrsMGE · 25/03/2020 12:05

I am not buying clothes at this time. Not in a mood to spend money unnecessarily and delivery drivers will definitely keep their jobs delivering various other items that are more needed. All delivery firms are recruiting, on good money.

I'm actually getting rid of a lot of older clothes and will definitely buy less going forward.

noisehelp · 25/03/2020 12:07

I've ordered skincare products I need for sensitive skin and a medical condition. I think ordering online is safer for all as the driver can put the box on my doorstep and it saves me a trip out. No one is coming into contact with anyone. I'll wash my hands after receiving the box and put it into the recycling outside.

GrandTheftWalrus · 25/03/2020 12:08

Shes not grown out of them yet. I should get another couple of weeks. But she is starting to grow out of her shoes and she is saying they hurt. But I'll try and hold off for as long as I can.

However my morrisons is open still so when I need to go for a shop I can always throw some leggings and tops in the trolley.

flirtygirl · 25/03/2020 12:12

People should spend as normal if able to as more businesses will fold otherwise.

You have to weigh corona virus up against the economy. I am the least capitalist person and I know this.

The delivery driver up above may well go hungry without his income and may not want to be stuck at home, you also have no idea if he was in the risk group or not. Lots of people look older than they really are.

The nurse who treated me last week was 69 years old. She said she was better at work even with the corona virus risk than sitting at home alone and even without the risk if she was in another job completely, she would still go to work if able.

And yes to the far poorer people in other countries whose job literally means life or death. Lots of jobs are able to be done and are already done at a social distance like delivery driver. The warehouses and factories should implement measures if necessary, but those who need items and can afford to buy items should continue to do so.

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 25/03/2020 12:13

It's a tricky one. On the one hand, I don't want to put warehouses workers and delivery drivers at greater risk, but on the other hand, I do want to keep businesses going.
At the moment, my rule of thumb is only to buy what I need and from small businesses if possible.

flirtygirl · 25/03/2020 12:13

And I'm not talking about needless consumption and over consumption but buying things you need.

IceKitten · 25/03/2020 12:13

We need to strike a balance between keeping people safe (flattening the curve) and keeping the economy going. Otherwise the long term effects when the pandemic is over could be worse than the actual pandemic. I say keep buying.
