Pope Francis' call to prayer at 11am (midday in Italy)

HyacynthBucket · 25/03/2020 10:42

The Pope has asked all Christians to pray for the world at midday (11am UK time) praying the Lord's Prayer with him. All people of good faith whatever their religion could do the same using their prayers to relieve us of coronovirus. A concerted prayer from the stricken earth. Prayer can move mountains. Please join in.

I will continue praying. Prayer is powerful and the name of Jesus is above all names, even corona virus.

Nicolastuffedone · 25/03/2020 14:35

The pope is catholic not Christian?? 😂😂😂😂😂😂 can’t believe I’ve just read that!!

Minesacider · 25/03/2020 14:39

Fucking LOL at the Pope not being Christian.

Glld luck with the prayers, all. I hope it brings you a bit of...peace? Reassurance? Take care everyone.

chrisbarker344 · 25/03/2020 14:46

Think I'll go with the scientific efforts to try and sort this.
But if you want to pray for a solution, go for it. There is no evidence that it has ever helped before but if it makes you personally feel better the that's fine.

FadedRed · 25/03/2020 14:47

Well said, 7Days
Isn’t laughter the best medicine? Well the line about the Pope being Catholic had made me 😂.
Did you know that apparently bears shit in the woods?

turkeyontheplate · 25/03/2020 14:51

Militant atheist here, but I agree with @7Days

This is not the time to be undermining people's coping strategies or trying to destroy their faith in something that makes them feel stronger. It's childish and cruel. Stop it.

If it helps people to feel that they're doing something constructive, crack on.

@StrongMama1989 thank you, that's the best laugh I've had all day!

ASandwichNamedKevin · 25/03/2020 14:56

I hope certain people aren't homeschooling RE lessons 😂

Ladybirdbookworm · 25/03/2020 15:19

Some of these comments are unnecessary and quite depressing.

BossAssBitch · 25/03/2020 15:29

Staunch atheist but you do whatever you can to get you through this shit storm.

And yes, we get that the poster who claimed the Pope isn't Christian is 'HILARIOUS'.....this post is like reading the Daily Mail with all the hyperbole over something not that funny Hmm

moondance19 · 25/03/2020 15:37

Have always believed in the power of prayer.

VegetableMunge · 25/03/2020 15:42

Prayer can make people feel better. Any quiet ritual people can do by themselves at home to improve their mental state is to be encouraged.

MitziK · 25/03/2020 16:27

Ever looked on the Daily Mail comments section for anything about the Pope? A quarter of the comments are claiming that he isn't Christian or Catholic: a sizeable number seem to think he's The Antichrist or Satan himself.

I have the feeling that even if there was a Second Coming, half the people who believe in the Abrahamic God would say 'Ah, but did they mean The Right Hand of God, as he'd have to be very, very tiny to sit on His palm, to God's right hand as though we were looking from God's throne, or to our right as we're looking at it? And the others would be still claiming this was clearing the case of another imitation/antichrist whilst souls are quite clearly being judged.

Personally, I don't believe any of it and have no desire to get into discussions of an eschatological nature. But it doesn't hurt to pray/think nice thoughts for a few moments if somebody wishes to do so.

ErrolTheDragon · 25/03/2020 16:47

If it makes you feel better, crack on.

The pope should, perhaps, be praying for forgiveness for setting a bad example by going out among crowds baby-kissing at the start of the outbreaks in Italy, and not shutting the churches quicker (correct me if I'm wrong but I think it was the state that did that eventually). Some other churches have been worse - insisting the faithful should take communion from a shared cup for example. Appallingly irresponsible.

dejavuAgain · 25/03/2020 17:17

LOL.

Surely your god is the one that caused it "Hey, you, you've proved your point. Arsehole'

dopeydwarf Catholics don’t pray to the Pope, silly. We pray to God.

Which church did Jesus found? The Catholic Church!

And who decided which books to include in the Bible? The Catholic Church!

Use the period of lockdown to educate yourself!

RishiSunakFanClub · 27/03/2020 00:21

I assume that means that we can come out of lockdown? If not, what was the point?

FunkyKingston · 27/03/2020 00:21

Which church did Jesus found? The Catholic Church!

Err no.

Isthepopea · 27/03/2020 00:23

Great argument funky

FunkyKingston · 27/03/2020 00:27

Great argument funky

It's just plain wrong. There's no historical basis for the claim. There's little more that needs saying.

soupforbrains · 27/03/2020 00:27

It wasn’t an eloquent argument but Jesus was a Jew and saw no reason to betray that faith in his lifetime. He did not ‘found’ any church in his lifetime.

Yes the Catholic Church is very ancient and is based upon the church which St Peter founded, being the very first bishop of roman (sometimes considered to be the first pope) so is among the oldest Christian churches but actually the church closest to Jesus’s own beliefs are probably the messianic Jews.

soupforbrains · 27/03/2020 00:28

*Rome not roman

Isthepopea · 27/03/2020 00:33

“You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church”.

Jesus literally founded the Catholic Church which continues in an unbroken line to today.
