Dh and I, like probably everyone have found ourselves glued to the news and social media. I need a mental break and want to find some soothing things to watch/read/do.

Tonight I’m rewatching Pick of the Litter on Netflix which I just found a joy the first time around, and have bought a Maeve Binchy on kindle, but would love some more “switch off” ideas. Aibu to ask for your recommendations

Punt for Parenthood, (1989).

Do you like Studio Ghibli? I find them so soothing and comforting. My faves are Howl’s Moving Castle and My Neighbour Totoro.

Another vote for Studio Ghibli, My Neighbour Totoro is lovely, the kids love it too.

I’m a big Doctor Who fan anyway but there are currently mass rewatches of specific episodes at a specific time, with the creators live tweeting, as well as tv I love it’s nice to be connected virtually with so many people for an hour

Otherwise I find mild is sitcoms like Friends, How I Met Your Mother, Big Bang Theory, Scrubs etc are good mindless tv that doesn’t take much concentration

@TotesGodsWill oh I love doctor who - how do I find out about the rewatches?

I was totally transported by BBC iplayer John Williams Prom - 120 mins - yet to watch it all but can thoroughly recommend.

I always find Terry Prachett soothing. So much so that despite having quite a few unread books on my shelves, I panic ordered the entire Witches collection which I am rabidly waiting for. Also been re-reading Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings in very short bursts.

Film wise, I've been watching Shrek and the original Jumanji and a few crime dramas on the BBC iPlayer.

However I have to say that I also followed advice and bought a few puzzles from charity shops a few weeks before lockdown. This is arguably the most stressful thing I have ever done and DH is now (sensibly) refusing to help as it might end in divorce.

Notlostjustexploring · 26/03/2020 11:18

The two for me would be the vicar of Dibley and Dinnerladies. Both manage to be hilarious and heartwarming.

Anything planet and space related on the discovery channels.

I keep returning to the girl with the dragon tattoo books for something for my brain when I want escapism. And Anne of green gables.

There's a 2 part thing on BBC iplayer called animals at play.

2 hours of baby dolphins, big cats and bears playing and none of the usual animal documentary worrying bits where they make out that one of the baby tigers or penguin chicks is going to get abandoned by it's parents, eaten by a bigger animal or starve to death when mum can't find any food etc.

Youwonjane · 26/03/2020 17:37

@BarbaraofSeville that’s sounds lovely!

@Youwonjane

Twitter mainly, the official Doctor Who page has been tweeting about them. Think the next one is Vincent and the Doctor on 30th March at 7pm. Can’t wait, it’s my favourite episode!
