Dh and I, like probably everyone have found ourselves glued to the news and social media. I need a mental break and want to find some soothing things to watch/read/do.

Tonight I’m rewatching Pick of the Litter on Netflix which I just found a joy the first time around, and have bought a Maeve Binchy on kindle, but would love some more “switch off” ideas. Aibu to ask for your recommendations

9 to 5

If you’re in the mood for a classic musical, there’s

Grease

Saturday Night Fever

Singin’ in the Rain

Hello, Dolly!

And if you’ve never watched the old biblical epics, The Ten Commandments and Ben Hur, they’re definitely worth a watch.

IAmFleshIAmBone · 25/03/2020 13:12

I would have suggested Weir's Way, but I'm not sure if there's any way to watch it now as it's quite old. I know you can get the box set on amazon.

Ninkanink · 25/03/2020 13:25

Oh there’s also a few Hitchcock films.

Ninkanink · 25/03/2020 13:26

(But whether you’d find them soothing, I don’t know!)

Ninkanink · 25/03/2020 13:26

Plus Romeo and Juliet!

7Days · 25/03/2020 13:26

Sex and the Spanish flu... hmm maybe Downton is not what I'm after to watch with the kids....

ZsaZsaMc · 25/03/2020 13:28

The BBC Colin Firth Pride & Prejudice is on Netflix

Ninkanink · 25/03/2020 13:30

I really liked Gilmore Girls.

InsanityRocks · 25/03/2020 14:06

I adore the film Paper Moon.
Tom's Midnight Garden is the most wonderful book.
Also, I find reading any of the original Sherlock Holmes books comforting.

CountFosco · 25/03/2020 14:25

The Secrets of the V&A on BBC2 (or iplayer) is quiet escapism. I'm going to reread Cold Comfort Farm next. Agree with earlier votes for The No1 Ladies Detective Agency, PG Wodehouse and Nancy Mitford.

And my greatest comfort film of all time isSeven Brides for seven Brothers. Questionable sexual politics but wonderful songs and dancing. I dare you to watch the <a class="break-all" href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=m.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3DQbzJtP75NqM&ved=2ahUKEwjA4vmC6rXoAhVPUBUIHV_zDoAQwqsBMAB6BAgEEAU&usg=AOvVaw1zTSB7vzANN9iGqPFujpSS" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Barn raising scene without a grin on your face.

So, over the course of December and Jan I discovered 9 seasons of bobs burgers on amazon prime. It's. Amazing. At the time my mum in law was terminally ill, and she passed away at the start of Jan.

I'm currently on my third run through of all nine seasons. Up to about S4 again. They have become my balm.

Yep it's a cartoon. But it's so much more than that. A set of characters that are all very eccentric but really love each other.

Schitt’s Creek

Spud1802 · 25/03/2020 15:12

The Crown on Netflix, if it's your thing (it's certainly mine).

Youwonjane · 25/03/2020 15:44

The crown is 100% right but just finished it. Great suggestions here

I watched all of the Gilmore Girls during a rough period last year, and it was great - girly & witty & nothing really bad happens to anyone.

covetingthepreciousthings · 25/03/2020 16:44

Where are people watching Jonathan Creek? Is it on Netflix? I used to love that so think that would be a good comfort watch.

FaithInfinity · 25/03/2020 16:51

Yes coveting it’s on Netflix.

Youwonjane · 25/03/2020 17:24

Oh in Podcasts - Desert Island Discs is a good one.

The DDs and I have been watching early series Glee and Doctor Who. Excellent escapism.

PhantomErik · 25/03/2020 17:43

I'm reading Longbourn at the moment which is written from the point of view of the housekeeper/housemaids in Pride & Prejudice.

It's great for taking my mind off the real world!

DarlingCoffee · 25/03/2020 18:09

Gardeners world (BBC I-player)

ChipsyChopsy · 25/03/2020 18:12

Ladies in Lavender

afrikat · 25/03/2020 18:13

Have you got Disney+?

Loads of lovely classics on there. Just watching Three Men and a Baby!

FuckOffCorona · 25/03/2020 18:44

Do you like Studio Ghibli? I find them so soothing and comforting. My faves are Howl’s Moving Castle and My Neighbour Totoro.
