Shopping delivery slots

grannynap · 24/03/2020 20:35

Hi, AIBU to think there should be some way to prove how much I desperately need an online delivery slot?

Every single week for over 3 years we have used click and collect or home delivery with Asda but now we can't get any whatsoever

I'm currently in the 14 day lockdown whilst looking after my asd dd and 2 other dc.
My husband is having a massive mental breakdown and suffering from agoraphobia.
We have no friends or family to help as they're either isolating or in vulnerable lockdown so we are stuck for food.
Husband has been out once this week because we were desperate and had no other choice and he literally collapsed through the door in a panic attack I nearly had to phone an ambulance for him.

I really need a slot and I can't see any other way to solve this problem.

Post in your local Facebook group, I’m sure someone will help.

ElloElloVera · 24/03/2020 20:37

Also try local butchers and grocers. Many are delivering around here.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 24/03/2020 20:38

Where are you based? Our local Facebook groups have some support networks going on - can you search for a local one?

I know that some people have found delivery slots when they've contacted supermarkets directly explaining how in need they are or vulnerable - is that an option?

Flowers I really hope you manage to find a slot.

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 24/03/2020 20:39

Sainsbury's website says you can call them if you are vulnerable for slots

SquashedSpring · 24/03/2020 20:41

So sorry to hear you're having such a hard time.

Do you have a Morrisons near you? Another poster linked to these boxes they're doing. Could one see you through until something else becomes available? www.morrisons.com/food-boxes/boxes

Tiredoutteacher2020 · 24/03/2020 20:42

Some of us are in for 12 weeks and can't get a slot.

rosie39forever · 24/03/2020 20:43

Don't bother with Sainsburys been ringing constantly for 2 days and engaged all the time even tweeted them and all they say is ring the number they're a total joke, I've been shopping with them for 30 years but not anymore it's just a PR exercise they're not actually doing anything to help the vulnerable.

adaline · 24/03/2020 20:44

Can you get a Morrisons delivery box?

IndecentFeminist · 24/03/2020 20:50

Definitely have a look for smaller local companies, lots of ours have stepped up where the big guys are overwhelmed. Similarly a fair few local groups have set up shopping for others etc

carnivalisover · 24/03/2020 20:51

Cook in my town lets you call up the shop, order & pay...then bag it so you have the briefest interaction when you collect...I’m sure they’d bring it to the door of the shop, or accept a taxi driver collecting.

Their meals might keep you going till you can get a slot.

worryingfriend · 24/03/2020 20:55

Do you have amazon prime? Prime Now deliver groceries and they're sensibly not letting people hoard slots, but releasing them throughout the day. I looked yesterday lunchtime on the offchance and got a slot between 4 and 6 that same day.

PinkiOcelot · 24/03/2020 20:55

Sorry you’re having such a hard time OP. DH is suffering panic attacks at the moment. It’s horrendous.
I’m the same. Been getting Tesco delivery every week for years and can’t get a delivery slot for love nor money. So annoying.

Teacup34 · 24/03/2020 21:03

I would also recommend the Morrisons food box. We have one coming Sunday I couldn't get any other supermarket to deliver anything no slots at all!! I hope you get something sorted!

Waveysnail · 24/03/2020 21:05

Get on fb. There are loads of local shops, butchers etc offering delivery that usually wouldnt.

CiorstanMI · 24/03/2020 21:29

Try contacting your local council to find out about local volunteer groups. Most areas are setting up such groups and their aim is to help families like yours with everyday tasks such as shopping. There's definitely help out there for you.

IncognitoIsMyFavouriteWord · 24/03/2020 22:14

I went on my FB because I too am isolated, live alone and have a high-risk lung condition.

There are no local stores offering delivery (small Yorkshire town). I have a feeling that's because everyone would jump on it and they don't have the man power. I too tried to contact the number on Sainsbury's that just has a pre-recorded message telling them they're too busy.

When I looked at Amazon their prices were extortionate.

I may just have to risk it and venture out to my local co-op though it is a scary prospect.

melj1213 · 24/03/2020 22:19

they're a total joke, I've been shopping with them for 30 years but not anymore it's just a PR exercise they're not actually doing anything to help the vulnerable.

Supermarkets are overwhelmed. We can only do so much. Everyone has a reason why they shoud have priority - they're elderly, they're caring for elderly people, theyre NHS staff, they're a key worker, they're in a vulnerable category, they have children, they're single and have no support network etcetc - and our systems arent set up to sort deliveries by "worth", just first come, first served.

I work in a supermarket and our home delivery team are overwhelmed. We are in the Lake District so cover a very large area and no matter how many people we want to help there are only so many people available to pick the deliveries and deliver them, not to mention the equipment - home shopping trollies/totes/delivery vans/handcarts etc - we have to actually complete the deliveries.

It is made especially difficult as all equipment is regularly taken out of service to be disinfected and all drivers have to spend time disinfecting everything after leaving each house, which eats into the time available for deliveries.

We are desperately recruiting more people to our home shopping team at the moment because so many of our drivers are either in the vulnerable category themselves or are self isolating, but it's not just a case of having a driving licence and showing up with a CV because they are lone workers who are going to customers homes. Unfortunately it takes time to sort things out, but the information given to companies is changing on a daily basis and we are not prepared for this kind of situation. We are trying to deal with it as best we can and also answer the public's questions about systems/policies we are literally making up as we go along.

maddening · 24/03/2020 22:20

Sorry are you isolating as you think you have covid?

tobedtoMNandfart · 24/03/2020 22:27

Yes you don't mention why you yourself cannot go out for essential groceries?

I work for a supermarket. We are doing absolutely everything we can whilst also suffering the same restrictions as everyone else - staff absences, health anxieties, family worries, MASSIVE unprecedented demand.
Every single phone call is from someone who thinks that they are in some way special and deserving of particular help. Sorry.

thepeopleversuswork · 24/03/2020 22:30

I'm in the same position OP. Genuinely now totally out of options. And there are people on here lecturing those of us who can't get delivery slots about not going to supermarkets.

IncognitoIsMyFavouriteWord · 24/03/2020 22:34

*melj123

That's the thing, Sainsbury's is sorting it by what they deem as worth.

You cannot book (or even look for) a slot because they do not class you as vulnerable.
Like telling a blue badge holder they don't look disabled if you ask me.

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 24/03/2020 22:37

Do you have a local milkman? We’ve managed to get a daily milk delivery and he also does dairy products and a few essentials.

wizzywig · 24/03/2020 22:40

@worryingfriend is that the same as amazon fresh?

Cunninglittlevixen · 24/03/2020 22:52

Can't dh stay in whilst you go out

widdioisright · 24/03/2020 22:53

Our district Council has a list of all the help groups in the area, where Inlive there are lots.

Our village has a 24hour helpline number, each street has volunteers, they have been collecting medication or shopping. Can even call them if you have any anxiety.

Sure there will be something in your area.
