Is this much wear on a carpet normal? *pics*

Bought a house, no carpets, in a state.

Borrowed a lot of money to do it up. Moved in 3-4 months ago.
The idea was to buy decent things so we don't have to do it again for a while, we didn't scrimp.
Once the money is gone it's gone and we'll have to then re-decorate each room as the time comes and as the money comes.

We're a family of 5 and we have an issue with two rooms.
One is the living room, I noticed the problem agent 2 weeks the entrance to the front room carpet was looking tatty.
I was gutted but feel like we are a big family and it's a common entrance so that sucks but we have to endure it.

But now I've noticed my bedroom - by my bed the carpet looks crap. It stands out, and no amount of vacuuming helps.

The thing is, we spent more money on my one because it would last me the longest. The idea being, in the only one who uses my room and my room is used ^the least!>

I've added pictures but it doesn't show it very well. In real life it's really obvious.

Some questions I'm anticipating - we NEVER wear shoes in the house, we don't have pets, we don't have hard soled slippers, I vacuum regularly with a decent vacuum (Miele) and they never mentioned to us that this may be an issue.

The living room I could cope with - just.

But my bedroom which no one frequents? All I do is sleep in here!

Pictures are the wrong way round.

The second one is how it is in places that doesn't get walked on.

It’s just flattened I think. Try washing it / using a carpet cleaner & it may come up fine?

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 24/03/2020 18:57

It's flattened and kind of matted too.

So I have to wash it every 2 months?

Is that normal then?

I have an expensive carpet that does this. Very annoying I feel your pain. I'm going back to 80/20 wool twist next time.

YeahWhatevver · 24/03/2020 19:02

Kinda looks like the carpet "strands" a have matted.

I've got one carpet like this but it's 5 or 6 years old and it's only like this eight at the door where it gets a lot of wear.

Suppose it's just the brand/type/materials in the carpet that make the difference. it definitely seems to have prematurely worn

elaeocarpus · 24/03/2020 19:03

I have no solution, but similar issues. Last house we put in thick/ deep pike- flattened pretty quickly in high traffic areas. This house a shorter pile, but same again. It looks awful.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 24/03/2020 19:11

This has such little traffic.

And in the living room where there issues because of high traffic - they should have warned us.
Had we known, we never would have used that carpet! It was advertised for living rooms. So we thought we would put it in our living room.
They should have said "living rooms that no one ever used" or "leap over the threshold to avoid flattening the carpet and stay fit"

We just had our carpets professionally cleaned and were amazed at the difference, they look like new now!

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 24/03/2020 19:35

I have to get my carpets professionally cleaned every 3 months in order for them to
stay in tact?

That's the most ridiculous thing I've heard in the last 2 hours.

OP posts:
eosmum · 24/03/2020 19:39

It’s loose fibers that make it look matted. Kind of like dreadlocks. Over time they will disappear, and if you get it cleaned it will smooth them out. A stiff brush is better than a vacuum.

justasking111 · 24/03/2020 19:41

I have a runner from kitchen into sitting room, even without shoes it gets hammered. However, the bedroom is bad, is it a wool carpet?

justasking111 · 24/03/2020 19:42

I use a scrubbing brush on hall rug to bring it back up. If you have a nail brush do a test area

Mc2020 · 24/03/2020 19:43

How good is your hoover? We noticed the same issue but after buying a new hoover (Shark duo clean - tis amazing) the problem disappeared!

iusedtohavechickens · 24/03/2020 19:48

Get some roll and stroll and put down and walk over for 24 hours when lifted it should bring the pile back up xx

adaline · 24/03/2020 19:49

We had the same problem, then like @Mc2020 we switched to a Shark hoover and the difference is amazing.

Also, the muck and fluff it brought up was incredible!

PigletJohn · 24/03/2020 20:01

what's it made of? I've seen thin synthetic carpets do that.

Is there an underlay?

You can put a mat or runner near the doorway.

LesLavandes · 24/03/2020 20:06

Call the carpet shop and get them out

It's a long thick pile, that's just what happens to them. If you want it to stay looking new then you need a short twist pile, not a saxony. Or better still a looped weave.

SugarSugarShimmy · 24/03/2020 20:13

I have a cheap carpet and it looks like yours on the left

annie987 · 24/03/2020 20:23

I’d be gutted with that. We got a new carpet last year in our busy lounge and it still looks like new.
Have you complained to the carpet shop?

MrsMoastyToasty · 24/03/2020 20:28

It might have been laid in the wrong way. Some carpets have a nap like velour does.

eurochick · 24/03/2020 20:36

Man made fibres do flatten more easily. A good % of wool in the fibre will give it spring and help it stay newer for longer. But is obviously more expensive. A short, tight pile will also hold its appearance for longer. That does look like quite bad wear for the age of the carpet but most longer piled manmade fibre carpets will look like that after a while.

1Morewineplease · 24/03/2020 21:08

We have a 100% fake carpet due to years of wretched carpet beetle on our beloved , expensive wool carpets. It’s bleach cleanable, easy to clean and always looks brand new after a vacuum. The pile is fab and always looks good .

PigletJohn · 24/03/2020 21:24

a dense polypropylene twist?
