to think that going for a walk is too bloody stressful?!

We live in London. Go out for our permitted daily walk (me, dog, 4yo DD). Constantly having to dodge on the way to the park to avoid people coming in the opposite direction. Once in the park, same story. Dodging out of the way every 10 seconds to maintain social distancing. DC not understanding why she cannot run on ahead. DD touches bench before I can stop her then immediately puts a finger in her mouth. Leave to return home as park is just too busy to be able to be safe.

We dont have a garden and I desperately feel we need outdoor exercise, but this is the same story every time and it doesn't matter what time of day it is either.

I don't think little children should be out at the moment if they're too young to understand/follow the rules.

Gwenhwyfar · 24/03/2020 19:26

" I seen a few joggers coughing and spitting because of lack of fitness."

Quite possibly just the wind making their nose run.

Pishposhpashy · 24/03/2020 19:29

Gwenhwyfar

As soon as that is government mandated advice, then I shall stop taking her out.

I’m anxious going out too. Never know whether to take DC2 in the pram or carrier (still faces me so more difficult for people to cough in their face) and DC1 is a thumb sucker. Me and DC1 have been playing in the garden but poor DC2 hasn’t been outside for days now.

viques · 24/03/2020 19:30

Give it until Friday and the newly minted walkers will have given it up. I think the combination of a sunny day and the novelty of being told what they could and couldn't do was too much for some people.

GameSetMatch · 24/03/2020 19:31

I needed to go to Sainsbury’s today as I had no juice or milk left, 5 and 2 year old were told the rules before we entered the shop, I disinfected the trolly and told both boys not to let go, as I reached for the apples I turned around and two year old was licking the floor, BRILLIANT!

Everything is stressful at the moment walks, shopping, garden, staying inside etc. I think I’m going to have a nervous break down.

NotMeNoNo · 24/03/2020 19:31

I'm afraid I'm one of those born again joggers, because my daily activity from travelling to and walking around work has vanished to walking to my desk at home. That's why more people are doing specific exercise in places they don't normally do it.

resipsa · 24/03/2020 19:31

I'd say before 7. That's when I've been out. Only saw the milkman yesterday in 20 mins. Looking out an hour ago, it was much busier.

Pishposhpashy · 24/03/2020 19:31

I do think the sunny weather is making it worse. Before all this we were out every day rain or shine and there were never so many people.

“ I don't think little children should be out at the moment if they're too young to understand/follow the rules.“

Shall we leave our toddlers home alone or shall we just let them starve?

Xiaoxiong · 24/03/2020 19:33

I don't think the glorious weather is helping either, if this had all been helping back in January with that horrendous rain and storm Brendan/Ciara/Dennis or whatever it was we wouldn't be having these issues with everyone desperate to get outside and feel the sun on their face and have a BBQ in the back garden. Just wait until the weather turns and all these people will go straight back indoors.

Deathraystare · 24/03/2020 19:34

Also all our parks have been closed in Hammersmith & Fulham so more people on the streets - not complaining as the park was manic the other day!

That's good to know thanks. I guess I will have to stick to quiet streets.

I walked up to Chiswick yesterday and did feel better in myself in the sunshine. I don't have a garden and live in a small room in a shared flat.

Pishposhpashy · 24/03/2020 19:34

I read that we are in for a warmer than average April. Fx for another storm!!!

NotMeNoNo I usually walk almost 90 mins a day on my commute to and from work, and have a standing desk so my exercise levels have also plummeted. However, I have to save my walk for the dog, so I'm doing the Joe Wicks PE session with my kids every morning and then extending it with a bit more stuff I found on the nike fitness app. I think it's actually better exercise than all the walking I was doing before.

Dishwashersaurous · 24/03/2020 19:37

My three year old loves playing spies, so we have to stop and move away if people get too close. If they look like they might get too close he shouts “2 metres stay away “. And they back off.

Have you explained to her that she can’t be within two metres of anyone apart from you? As they all think it’s a great game

Amboseli · 24/03/2020 19:37

Agree. Jogger went past me huffing and puffing virtually in my face. So selfish and inconsiderate.

Also I'm finding people seem to be able to keep their distance if walking in front and behind but for some reason passing by to the side of me they'll walk close by. I try and dodge out of the way but why on earth don't people realise that the 2m is a radius around each person. Not a linear line in front and behind?

I think there needs to be some sort of belt worn around the waist with 2m 'spikes' radiating all the way around that must be worn when outside so people can't get too close.

TeacupDrama · 24/03/2020 19:39

go after 9 when lots of kids will be logged onto google classroom between 9-12 then they have lunch and go out so do it in reverse

TheWordmeister · 24/03/2020 19:40

We are lucky that we live rurally so can go out without seeing anyone, or easily keep a distance.

I really hope that spitting is banned after this, btw. It's the most disgusting practice even without a pandemic.

CheshireDing · 24/03/2020 19:40

I had been walking my 3 at about 7am in our village.

Today we didn’t go out and at the moment they want be again as it’s making me too nervous because people who were never out at that time before are suddenly going past right next to us.

So selfish

runrabbitrunrunrun · 24/03/2020 19:43

Go out early!

megletthesecond · 24/03/2020 19:46

Yanbu. We've been wearing gloves, even when running.
Our loop avoids the parks and nice paths and is basically five loops of a wide path. I'd rather not walk past the same broken glass and speed humps but it avoids most people.

HuggedTheRedwoods · 24/03/2020 19:48

Could you put gloves on your DD as a start and possibly even make a little fun mask for her to stop her touching her face or putting her fingers in her mouth? You could do a family theme! Grin

Like other posts, runners are a bit of a problem round our way too. Wide paths in the local park make it very easy to keep well over 6ft apart and although few walkers about early doors we all move to opposite sides when anyone is approaching. Bar the runners who run straight down the centre so a lot closer and one woman this morning was clearly puffing and wheezing, goodness knows what she was spitting out.

RadioRodeo · 24/03/2020 19:51

Totally agree. I aimed to do an 8k run quite early this morning but came home after 3k as there were SO MANY people around. :(

okiedokieme · 24/03/2020 19:52

There's definitely more people about than normal, probably because they are not at work. I'm pt so I often shop about 2pm and barely see a person walking, cycling or jogging in the 5 mins each way it takes me to cycle, today at least 50 or so.

TSSDNCOP · 24/03/2020 19:52

DS and I went at tea-time and did a 2 mile loop through the streets. We saw people but we all super-courteously crossed the road to avoid each other. It was all very civilised.

Then we got home and next doors Sainsbury driver was standing on the path coughing for Covid Hmm
