OK, I admit, it's clear as mud now.

Thought last night's message by the PM was fairly clear.

The day's updates from the government have just added more confusion and I now don't see how we're in a materially different place than we were at this time yesterday.

Work from home if you can but if not then go to work seems to be the message.

It’s pathetic. Employers are abusing it. Restrictions must be tighter

Halfeatentoast · 24/03/2020 17:03

This is what I said to DH yesterday. I was astounded BBC and Sky kept saying how much things were clear and tightened up. It didn't look much different to me either except maybe a fine.

YeahWhatevver · 24/03/2020 17:05

I actually thought yesterday was OK.

You must stay at home
Only leave for a very few specific reasons.
Only go to work if essential

Now its pretty much back to last week's message

atm the government seem to be trying to keep as much of the economy going as possible,
while removing specific businesses that have the biggest effects on social distancing,

e.g. banning any entertainment, hospitality or leisure business that brings groups of customers into physical proximity

If too many employers abuse the current rules,
or if it just doesn't work as well as hoped,
then the government would have to specifically order more sectors to either WFH or close down

BigChocFrenzy · 24/03/2020 17:09

and they may ban walks over 50 yards for everyone if the bloody dog-walkers keep taking Fido for multiple runs

OddshoesOddsocks · 24/03/2020 17:12

@OhClover they are, my DP was sent home this morning on a 3 week shutdown only to be rung this afternoon to be told business as usual tomorrow as they’ve found a loophole! 😡

ShellsAndSunrises · 24/03/2020 17:12

West Mids police broke a BBQ up today: t.co/BQuLaOiw0b

But people do seem to be taking the piss. Everyone thinks they are special. There's someone all over my Instagram who has gone to Yorkshire to live for lockdown as she didn't feel London was taking it seriously enough...

But I do think the science was sound in terms of avoiding a severe second wave of this, trying to keep the economy going, build herd immunity and enforce social distancing has proved tough and lockdown will only increase the chances that it comes back for a serious round 2... I'm dreading that we get even further locked down, like Italy or India.

But I think everyone else might be, too, and that's why they are making the most of being able to get outside...

midwestspring · 24/03/2020 17:13

In an effort to protect the economy the government has placed restrictions on people's leisure time but not their work.

In the state I live in the USA all non essential business workplaces have been shut. The UK government is still putting the economy first.

ShellsAndSunrises · 24/03/2020 17:14

Posted too soon! Not that I agree with that. It's not hard, just stay in.

Everyone seems to have a special reason to not follow the advice.

It's been hard. I'm currently arguing for a refund from my wedding venue who cancelled last week. Everyone is struggling. The unknown is scary... but staying inside shouldn't be so hard.

I think compliance would have been a lot higher had it not been such nice weather; too. Again, not that I think that's an excuse to go outside.

TheQueef · 24/03/2020 17:16

We need a lockdown because the NHS and key workers will need the critical care in two weeks, we can't afford the beds blocked by others.

NotEverythingIsBlackandwhite · 24/03/2020 17:24

It was clear yesterday and it was clear in Matt Hancock's update on not long ago. I'm struggling with why people aren't understanding what has been said.

StarlightLady · 24/03/2020 17:32

Clear yesterday?
Stay at home or you will kill people.

Clear today?
Go to work if you can’t work from home?

Clear today?
Keep 2 meters away from others on the tube. As if!

Undies1990 · 24/03/2020 17:34

The lockdown message is confusing everyone.

For example, last night my DS was sent a text saying his workplace was closing for 3 weeks and not to go to work with immediate effect. This morning DS received a phone call telling him to get into work as it's business as usual.

So the government say "don't go out" but that's not what the government mean.

Halfeatentoast · 24/03/2020 17:37

Maybe then it's not that it's not clear- just not very practical. And there are loopholes.

Youngatheart00 · 24/03/2020 17:38

If I was Boris I’d be furious about the contradictions put out today.

maddening · 24/03/2020 17:39

The onus should be on employers to show that there is no possible way to wfh.

greathat · 24/03/2020 17:40

If they tell more business to shut down then they'd have to do the same for them as the ones that have been told to shut. Right know businesses that have had to shut have had financial backing from government- reduced/no rent, cheaper rates. My DH's factory sent everyone home but without financial help this will kill the company. They can't afford to pay salaries if there's no money coming in

Teddypops · 24/03/2020 17:47

I closed my business this morning following government information. Then that information changed and I look like an idiot.

TabbyMumz · 24/03/2020 17:49

Yes, he hasnt said only keyworkers can go to work. He has said if its absolutely necessary and if you cant work from home.

TabbyMumz · 24/03/2020 17:51

"If I was Boris I’d be furious about the contradictions put out today."

Well, he's the one who has made them.

twosoups1972 · 24/03/2020 17:52

I feel more positive after last night's announcement but I would like there to be more. People aren't listening. I saw my neighbours go out together today in their car, a married couple. Why did they both need to go??

I hope we go the way of the rest of Europe with tighter restrictions. It's the only way.

YangShanPo · 24/03/2020 17:55

How can they ask people to totally lockdown away from friends and loved ones, or limit people to one outing a day but say it's fine to go into work in a non essential job provided you are 2 metres apart. That is the contradiction people are questioning.

allmycats · 24/03/2020 18:04

So many people are confused, we have been asked why my husband, an engineer, is still working as he can,t possibly be an essential worker. Today he was at a food cold storage facility who had a problem on their loading bay and no loading could take place until it was sorted. Essential workers are not necessarily who you might think they are. Tomorrow he is at a large farm fixing another haulage problem. If the food cannot be moved it will not get to the shops.

1Morewineplease · 24/03/2020 18:04

So many companies seem to be expecting workers to come in , irrespective of the government’s guidelines.
My heart goes out to Weatherspoon’s staff, as well as other companies that are similarly operating.
People with money can cope but those on the breadline have been abandoned. To have to wait several weeks on no pay, to get a reduced pay packet is so unfair.

Hercwasonaroll · 24/03/2020 18:09

@twosoups1972 they might have been driving to do exercise somewhere secluded.
