People getting cars serviced and repaired

Slipjigger · 24/03/2020 13:42

My DH works in a garage (in Ireland) and they have been run off their feet in the last two weeks with people booking in cars for services and small repairs jobs. They are telling him they are off work as their employer has closed so they are taking this opportunity to get their car done.

I have serious rage over this, its actually making me sick. These idiots are putting my DH and co-workers (and all their families) at risk for nothing. I have an underlying condition as do both my parents who are self isolating but I still have to call to them to shop for them, etc.

Why are people so selfish?

I voted YABU as if the garage is open for business people will use it. Really it should be the garage owner you are angry at?

ScorpionQueen · 24/03/2020 13:47

Should be essential workers only, they need reliable cars.

attillathenun · 24/03/2020 13:48

YABU - some people like my husband are still having to work and his MOT was about to expire which isn’t something he can put off. Think you should be annoyed at the garage owners and/or the government really

My family run a chain of garages. They have been designated as essential businesses to remain open. People still have to travel safely if they must travel.

Hingeandbracket · 24/03/2020 13:51

YANBU our car is due a service and MOT and we're not having it done. We will take a chance when it expires in early April. The car is in generally good order and roadworthy.

BTW before anyone says my insurance is invalid with no MOT - it is not true, I have checked.

Sansastark45 · 24/03/2020 13:51

Surely if people can only go out once a week they will need their car? what about the carers in the community who rely on their cars? You just expect them to risk their lives in dangerous cars??

I think the garage has to have something in place to protect them - wearing gloves, wiping down the steering wheel, gear stick, key etc and not to allow anyone into the actual garage?

I think keeping cars on the road is pretty vital to be honest.

BlackWhitePurple · 24/03/2020 13:51

YABU and NU! Garages need to be open because those who are still working need their cars (especially if public transport gets scaled back). OTOH they should only be accepting emergency work that NEEDS to be done and by appointment only, not just every person who comes through the door.

Whydoesit · 24/03/2020 13:51

The garage should either be shut or should be accepting emergency jobs only.

Just like plumbers can still do emergency call outs but shouldn’t be taking on other jobs.

Tp93 · 24/03/2020 13:52

I'm in Australia and my husband is a mechanic. A lady came in today saying she is self isolating and wanted to get her head lights repaired but she would stay in the car. His company told her to jog on. People are literally stupid.

BoingBoingyBoing · 24/03/2020 13:56

"The government has extended MOTs for three months. "

Only for HGVs/buses and the like. Not for cars.

PurpleDaisies · 24/03/2020 14:02

Apologies, I must have misheard the bbc guy this morning. I’ll get my post deleted.

Glitterb · 24/03/2020 14:07

I had my servicing and MOT done yesterday, it was booked months in advance. The garage was still open and taking in work, had my MOT been booked in later this week then I probably would have cancelled. I am still required to be at work so I need my car, I have no option to work from home. If you feel that strongly about him not being at work, then he needs to tell his employers.

LaurieFairyCake · 24/03/2020 14:11

I can't see they're at increased risk at all Confused

As long as they don't touch the people they will be working under the car and not IN the car

HermanHermit · 24/03/2020 14:13

@PurpleDaisies has that now been extended to passenger cars? I haven’t seen that?

adaline · 24/03/2020 14:13

Because garages are an essential service and are open as normal.

People need their cars to get to work, to get to the shops, to get to hospital if necessary. Of course garages need to be open so people can ensure their vehicles are safe and get work done if necessary.

Not sure why that makes you so angry? Confused

Badgerstmary · 24/03/2020 14:15

I have just booked my husbands car in for 2 new brake pads which the MOT said it will need. He is a key worker & needs it daily. I am relieved that the garage is still open.

ZigZaggyZoo · 24/03/2020 14:17

My friend had her car booked in for a service last week. She was in isolation for a temp and phoned to cancel. They told her they could do a collect and deliver service Shock She declined.

Andtwomakesix · 24/03/2020 14:30

My partner works at one, he's been disgusted with the state the cars he's been having to sit in - used tissues everywhere etc. It doesn't fill you with confidence that the owner hasn't been coughing and sneezing all over everything. Thankfully the garage decided to close. My midwife told me yesterday he should really be self isolating with me so I'm please its closed.

Andtwomakesix · 24/03/2020 14:32

As long as they don't touch the people they will be working under the car and not IN the car

My partners constantly in peoples cars. And they are disgustingly dirty at times!

HaudMaDug · 24/03/2020 14:36

Our local garage have been advised where possible to remain operational but behind closed doors. This is to keep key worker and emergency services on the road.
Mechanics are social distancing within the workshop.
Only agreed emergency works and essential repairs to keep key workers on the road. Customers have been asked to wipe down steering wheel, gear stick, door handles and ensure that Air Con is OFF then open windows if possible and leave key in car at prearranged time so that cars can be collected. Garage then repeat wipe down procedure before being delivered back to customers.

Fatted · 24/03/2020 14:40

YABU soley because my car had to go into the garage today because it needed a wheel bearing replaced. I work in the emergency services and DH works on the front line too. We have one car and we still need to get to work.

spanieleyes · 24/03/2020 14:40

My car is due an MOT, I need my car to get to work as I am a teacher and my school is open for key worker children. If the garage remains open, I will get my MOT done, I'm a law abiding citizen and wouldn't like to drive without one! However should the situation change and private car MOTs are also extended, then I will cancel the appointment.

hammeringinmyhead · 24/03/2020 14:42

This is difficult though. My parents are 3 miles from the nearest supermarket and there are no delivery slots available until mid-April. Ditto my friend who is pregnant and therefore high-risk. If their cars die, they need fixing asap.

hammeringinmyhead · 24/03/2020 14:42

Agree servicing should be put off!
