Just wondering how many of you are experiencing gut problems at the moment and aibu to think it's the tap water causing it?

Why would tap water cause gut issues? Where do you live?

Brevityisthesoulofwit · 24/03/2020 13:00

Nope and YABU

RosieSunset · 24/03/2020 13:00

Some people have gut issues as an early symptom of corona virus.

OlaEliza · 24/03/2020 13:01

According to a sound clip circulating in WhatsApp, D or V are unreported first symptoms of the virus.

Badabingbadabum · 24/03/2020 13:02

More likely to be stress.

Or my new diet of beer and biscuits.

Crazzzycat · 24/03/2020 13:02

Could it be stress related?

That sounds like a more logical explanation to me than tap water, which is subject to fairly rigorous testing

Mortified2468 · 24/03/2020 13:02

Yes, but for me it's directly linked to my anxiety, which I am struggling with at the moment.

OlaEliza · 24/03/2020 13:02

Why would tap water cause gut issues

I thought my tap water smelled very chloriney the other day. We don't drink it unless it's boiled so I don't know what it tasted like.

WrongKindOfFace · 24/03/2020 13:04

I am really acidy but I think it’s the stress.

MoonlightMistletoe · 24/03/2020 13:06

I live in London, my son aged two started with loose stools 11 days ago and it's still on going, I drank quite a bit of water yesterday and now have an upset stomach also my skin on my face after I showered came up bumpy / rashy so I just thought it could be the water.

I have no symptoms of coronavirus, no cough etc.

Writersblock2 · 24/03/2020 13:07

I think it’s stress too. I’m managing mine well but I think it’s impossible not to be impacted with everything going on.

LuxuryWoman2020 · 24/03/2020 13:08

I’m really acidy too, to the point I was sick last night. I think it’s a stress reaction even though I feel surface calm. It’s still bad today.

MoonlightMistletoe · 24/03/2020 13:10

For those saying they are acidy , my two year old wakes in the night coughing and then sick a little bit as if he has heartburn also sorry to be gross but it smells like chemicals.

Corona virus isn't the only bug going around. When our school closed we had many reported and confirmed cases of winter bugs including winter vomiting bug, D&V, HFM, pox, flu, mumps and even E. coli. Lots of viruses cause stomach upsets so it's more likely to be one of those than your water supply which tends to be picked up quickly if there is an issue

MoonlightMistletoe · 24/03/2020 13:10

The only way I can explain it is it smells like perming lotion.

LaChatte · 24/03/2020 13:11

DD has had this for 10 days now (we're in France), Dr thinks it's her reaction to CV (says highly likely all 4 of us have had it). DS had flu like symptoms, DH and I nothing.

PurpleDaisies · 24/03/2020 13:11

Stop scaremongering. It’s totally irresponsible.

RosieSunset · 24/03/2020 13:11

Here’s an article about it. Recent study says nearly 50% of the people they studied with corona virus had gut symptoms. Some of those people had diarrhea but no respiratory symptoms.

Is diarrhea a symptom of Covid 19?

hokolo · 24/03/2020 13:12

Drinking water in the UK is safe and clean. www.discoverwater.co.uk/

If you have any concerns about your water, contact your supplier and they will test it for you.

MoonlightMistletoe · 24/03/2020 13:12

@PurpleDaisies I'm not bloody scaremongering I'm actually worried and wondering if anyone else has experienced what I am experiencing.

FloofenHoofen · 24/03/2020 13:13

I had a really bad bout of diarrhoea the other night and I thought I had food poisoning, I'm still suffering now. Never really put it down to tap water though.

Leflic · 24/03/2020 13:18

Me too. In the SE. I had about a week of it. I put the poo down to extra cleaning ( my digestion isn’t used to sparkling kitchen) but then I threw up too. I don’t get D&V ( see previous about kitchen).
I wondered about a Coronavirus but had no other symptoms.
I wish that immunity test would hurry up.

RosieSunset · 24/03/2020 13:22

Please don’t ignore the possibility it’s corona virus.

People with digestive problems from corona virus have worse outcomes- perhaps because they don’t seek help as quickly because they think in the absence of other, more widely known symptoms like cough and fever that it isn’t corona virus.

From the article I linked to earlier:

“Those with digestive symptoms—which included anorexia or loss of appetite (83.8% cases), diarrhea (29.3%), vomiting (0.8%), and abdominal pain (0.4%)—also had “a worse clinical outcome and higher risk of mortality compared to those without digestive symptoms,” Brennan M.R. Spiegel, MD, MSHS, FACG, Co-Editor-in-Chief of The American Journal of Gastroenterology, explained in a press release. And, due to the fact that patients without digestive symptoms were more likely to be cured and discharged than patients with digestive symptoms, (60% of those without digestive symptoms were discharged, versus only 34.3% of patients with digestive symptoms), Dr. Spiegel emphasized “the importance of including symptoms like diarrhea to suspect COVID-19 early in the disease course before respiratory symptoms develop.” That in itself could lead to an earlier diagnosis of COVID-19, "which can lead to earlier treatment and more expeditious quarantine to minimize transmission," he said.

It should also be noted that those with digestive symptoms took much longer seek medical care. While the average time from symptom onset to hospital admission for those without digestive symptoms was 7.3 days, those with them took 9 days to be admitted. Researchers believe this may be an indicator that those with digestive symptoms sought care later because they did not yet suspect they were infected with the virus since they weren’t experiencing the most commonly discussed respiratory symptoms like cough or shortness of breath.”

Sparklypurpleunicornsaremyfav · 24/03/2020 13:23

My son, husband and me had a few days a week or two ago when we were going to the toilet more often and runny poos but no other symptoms, my two girls were fine. We're in the North west

MoonlightMistletoe · 24/03/2020 13:25

@Leflic I'm rather worried now not that I can do anything about it. I am also in SE, I never get D either I usually have the other problem with not being able to go.

Perhaps mine is down to stress/anxiety however my two year old has no idea what's going on in the world right now and I'm usually anxious anyway and don't get D.
