Domino’s Pizza still open..

wishesmadeonstars · 24/03/2020 09:24

So I work evenings at Domino’s and it’s been announced they are still running as usual, just restricting to ‘contact free’ deliveries only.

I have seen mixed response on Facebook comments etc about whether this is sensible. Some are saying that it’s a vital service at this time to provide people like NHS workers etc with quick and fresh food and is also an option for people to get food without leaving the house to go to busy supermarkets.

However, looking on my rota for this weekend there are 12 of us working in the actual kitchen (mix of managers and in-store staff) and it’s a very small space, you are standing shoulder to shoulder with people and constantly have to brush past people to move anywhere else. Then of course theres the additional 12 drivers who are in and out the door, standing squashed together whilst orders are bagged up, they are also in store a lot doing the washing up etc. They absolutely don’t have the space to have us standing a safe distance apart.

So that’s around 24 people having close contact with one another for several hours in order to run the place. I’m not sure if people realise it’s not like a small kebab shop with one person cooking and a couple of drivers.

I’m reluctant as to whether it’s the right thing to go into work, but it will make money a bit tight. Plus there are the points that actually it is helping people who can’t access food and prevents people mixing too much at supermarkets?

I was wondering whether takeaways would still be open. Not great for those who have to work there though, clearly.

wishesmadeonstars · 24/03/2020 09:31

I know some takeaways are quite sparse inside with only 1 or 2 in the kitchen then a couple of drivers who can wait in another area. Dominos is not like that, it’s no different to the busy kitchen area in McDonald’s (if not more cramped) which is now closed even for deliveries.

But I appreciate the supermarkets are awful atm, food shop delivery slots non existent...

Takeaways offering delivery are on the govt list of workplaces that can stay open. As far as possible you shouldn't all be crammed together. Anyone who has any symptoms should self-isolate and so on.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 24/03/2020 10:29

Thanks for confirming - we need some pleasures in life!

TooOldForSims · 24/03/2020 11:00

I'd hardly call Domino's a 'pleasure'.

Papa John's on the other hand...

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 24/03/2020 11:01

I meant takeaways in general...although I do love a Dominos!

TooOldForSims · 24/03/2020 11:04

I have to admit that all I have been wanting to eat for the past week or so is sushi. Must be all the salt...

wishesmadeonstars · 24/03/2020 13:58

I’m just pondering about whether or not I should really go in..

Tell them you have a cough and a fever and have to self isolate 🤷

Theyweretheworstoftimes · 24/03/2020 15:42

If all the takeaway places shut the pressure on the supermarkets is even greater.

Ponoka7 · 24/03/2020 15:48

It's totally up to you.

My DD works in Pizza Hut and is picking up extra shifts. They sound less cramped than you. The drivers are doing contactless deliveries (and bemoaning the lack of tips), so there's little risk there, just the risk of infecting each other.

What isn't helping is how busy you are going to get with alternatives closing.

Ponoka7 · 24/03/2020 15:50

All of the people my DD works with isolates when not at work, which she uses to reasure herself.

lynsey91 · 24/03/2020 15:57

I think it is ridiculous that takeaways are open. They are not a necessity for goodness sake

LumpySpacedPrincess · 24/03/2020 16:04

Many people cannot get hold of food and take away is one of the very few options available to them.

wishesmadeonstars · 24/03/2020 16:23

See this was one of the arguments put forward on Facebook, but surely there aren’t people relying solely on takeaways to feed themselves? You’d be spending a heck of a lot of money doing that as well..

That is a thing that happens in areas of deprivation where it's a long way to the nearest supermarket. You get an expensive corner shops and then cheap takeaways. It's often cited as a reason for obesity in areas with deprivation.

This doesn't apply to Domino's which isn't cheap! But to answer your more general question about takeaways.

Esp now when they really don't want people to have to get public transport to buy food they can afford.

sam221 · 24/03/2020 16:32

I know of few people that work in the restaurant industry, the general opinion amongst the owners, is that only the greedy takeaway owners are remaining open.
The are putting the lives of their staff and their families in danger for profit. The Government has actually put in actually good robust measures to help the industry, so no need to remain open.
Workers are feeling obligated to go in, using public transport, whilst worry about catching a life threatening virus.
I really feel they should all be shut now as soon as possible, It really isn't necessary.
Before anyone has a go at me, I have a family member who I just had an argument with, about closing his business. He is actually considered high risk but fully intends to flout the law, by popping to check in on his business daily. Honestly some people like them are so stupid and need closing down.

wishesmadeonstars · 24/03/2020 16:37

Any virus or illness would spread very easily in the working conditions, and obviously workers also live with others who may be key workers and still going out to work in other workplaces, so the environment could continue the spread quite easily.

Surprised we are still open thinking about it.

Take aways are allowed to open. If you want to use them, then do

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 24/03/2020 17:31

Looking forward to my free pizza on Friday (NHS perk)

rabbitsnose · 24/03/2020 19:32

My understanding is the government want to slow the spread, not eradicate the spread (obviously impossible) so they're trying to keep as many people as possible at home whilst allowing a good number of people to continue to work.

racerboy · 25/03/2020 07:29

Can I ask. I'm a very strict vegetarian. Is there a risk of cross contamination of non vegetarian products onto the pizza?

ScrapThatThen · 25/03/2020 07:42

There actually are some people who rely a lot on takeaways, I am starting to worry about them I'm I'm glad they have taken this decision. It will also help people cope with lockdown. Thank you for keeping going.

Flower1309 · 25/03/2020 07:45

Papa John's is better Blush (completely misses point of post) why did they stop making the garlic knots!
Personally I think ordering a takeaway is ok, i doubt they're coughing all over the food. The supermarket staff are having to touch everything while stocking up shelves it's the same principle surely.

wishesmadeonstars · 25/03/2020 12:27

@Flower1309 my issue isn’t the customers receiving the pizzas, more all of the staff who have to work in the shop in order to keep the business going- this weekend around 12 in store staff all packed into a small kitchen and standing shoulder to shoulder and absolutely impossible to practice social distancing of any kind. If anyone comes in with the virus then it would almost definitely spread through the shop.
