Domino’s Pizza still open..

So I work evenings at Domino’s and it’s been announced they are still running as usual, just restricting to ‘contact free’ deliveries only.

I have seen mixed response on Facebook comments etc about whether this is sensible. Some are saying that it’s a vital service at this time to provide people like NHS workers etc with quick and fresh food and is also an option for people to get food without leaving the house to go to busy supermarkets.

However, looking on my rota for this weekend there are 12 of us working in the actual kitchen (mix of managers and in-store staff) and it’s a very small space, you are standing shoulder to shoulder with people and constantly have to brush past people to move anywhere else. Then of course theres the additional 12 drivers who are in and out the door, standing squashed together whilst orders are bagged up, they are also in store a lot doing the washing up etc. They absolutely don’t have the space to have us standing a safe distance apart.

So that’s around 24 people having close contact with one another for several hours in order to run the place. I’m not sure if people realise it’s not like a small kebab shop with one person cooking and a couple of drivers.

I’m reluctant as to whether it’s the right thing to go into work, but it will make money a bit tight. Plus there are the points that actually it is helping people who can’t access food and prevents people mixing too much at supermarkets?

If all the takeaway places shut the pressure on the supermarkets is even greater.

There is that, but supermarkets can manage the risk better I think - Waitrose are doing one in and one out and hand sanitising everything.

The people who go on about takeaways closing are the people physically able to get food, cook food.

Lots of people are housebound, can't physically cook food, lots of carers have stopped going into the elderly and the disabled. Some people have needed care for a long time and never got any.

Some people do not have neighbours, family and friends. These people do need to order takeaway.

Surely anyone ordering a Domino’s Pizza is doing so on top of also needing other essentials and food items from supermarkets? I just don’t see how an unhealthy and expensive pizza delivery which is technically a luxury for most being an essential service. When you consider the number of staff crammed in each shop across the UK it will contribute to the spread of the virus.

I think a lot more people than you think eat a lot of takeaways. Domino's is possibly a lot of people's treat of the week given the relative cost.

They're not following government guidelines on social distancing and can apparently be reported to the HSE.

The working situation is awful, I'll give you that. But takeaways are essential. If someone who lives alone didn't participate in the panic buying and becomes symptomatic they need a method of getting food- you can't get a supermarket shop for love not money so you risk them going to the supermarket to infect others.

I think it is ridiculous that takeaways are open. They are not a necessity for goodness sake

People who are quarantined and can’t get supplies / feel too ill to cook and just need something hot and filling even if it isn’t terribly nutritious.
Restaurants and cafes who are facing untold months with takeaway revenues as their only business income.
People who are fed up of the whole bloody situation and just want a treat.

LittleLittleLittle · 25/03/2020 22:23

@lynsey91 I take it you aren't in the most vulnerable group so can go out to the shops?

wishesmadeonstars · 25/03/2020 22:25

But some takeaways can follow the social distancing and Domino’s can’t. Maybe if only vulnerable people or NHS staff who can’t get to the shops ordered then they could have fewer staff, more space and more time to follow procedure but 90% of orders are likely going to be people wanting an additional treat even though they’ve been to the supermarket.

I get that it’s one of the few treats people can have but it does need to be acknowledged workers are putting themselves and families at risk in order for people to have their treat.
