To consider taking up a whole new pursuit during lockdown

Anyone else doing this? I live in a flat and work fairly long hours and busy at the weekends (no kids) so I’m going to have a lot of spare time vs normal...

Any suggestions for new hobbies or pursuits to stop the madness setting in? Eg ive always loved books so wondering if I’ll maybe do some writing.

Anyone else got ambitions of “stuff they never normally have time for but now really don’t have an excuse not to do”?

I'd learn to knit, if Amazon are still delivering needles and wool.

BloggersNetwork · 24/03/2020 07:13

Knit, crochet, watercolours, art journal, yoga and meditation

tealandteal · 24/03/2020 07:13

Yoga? Baking? Learning another language?

Ylvamoon · 24/03/2020 07:16

I will be having a good look at this with my DC ... normally we are far to busy to even consider helping the scientific community.

I'm watching and trying Bob Ross episodes on YouTube.

Harder than he makes it look

Wilding · 24/03/2020 07:19

Embroidery, modern & ancient Greek, veg growing, pilates. Also going to start writing letters to my family.

cerealnapper · 24/03/2020 07:19

I'm learning how to knit, bAke and attempting to learn Portuguese

ArriettyJones · 24/03/2020 07:21

I was looking at some distance learning CPD last night.

Something creative sounds more fun, though. I wonder whether getting craft materials online at normal prices would be easy?

CheesecakeFactory87 · 24/03/2020 07:25

I'm permanently WFH and have been doing the free courses on the open university whilst waiting to begin my actual degree.

Stickybeaksid · 24/03/2020 07:30

I found a recorder in the utility room last night. Might take it back up again.

LittleRa · 24/03/2020 07:34

I’m learning the ukulele!

StormCiara · 24/03/2020 07:37

Archery?

Joking aside-something you can do with your hands is probably good. Juggling? Mildly active!

Loooobyloo · 24/03/2020 07:37

It's be great to bake more but there is no flour anywhere! I'm thinking knitting. Amazon are still delivering as my sister delivers fro them.

motherheroic · 24/03/2020 07:38

I'm getting back into digital drawing. Haven't done it since school, but I've got an apple pencil coming so I can start again.

GreenestValley · 24/03/2020 07:39

These all sound great! I reckon a mix of creative and practical stuff is a sensible idea.
I love cooking so will be taking the opportunity to do more
Always been interested in movies too so maybe watch some old or obscure ones I’ve never got around to seeing

Letters and craft stuff / cards are lovely idea too, might as well make some memories out of all this!

I've ordered some seeds from eBay as I forgot to get anything like that before this madness. I have a sunny patch on my front yard which I hoped to do hanging baskets with tomatoes and sugar snap peas in.

I plan to play my guitar more, i do play put I don't practice so this will be one thing.

Sorting the kids photos and memory books. Framing a few prints. Tidying various dumping grounds within my house (drawers, loft etc...)

Abelino · 24/03/2020 09:49

I'm learning to crochet, using youtube and a simple blanket pattern. It's very repetitive, but feels a lot better than a 'match 3' mobile game I'd be playing otherwise!

cantdothisnow1 · 24/03/2020 09:54

Yes crochet for me too.

NameChangedForThisOne7 · 24/03/2020 10:05

I've a feeling that crafts will go through the roof! I've ordered a whole load of wool and two books on how to crochet. Last night was watching some YouTube tutorial on how to make granny squares! Hoping to make a lovely bedspread for our bed. We should all post pictures of our efforts once this is all over. Hopefully all our supplies will arrive!

Dh is painting watercolours and sketching. It's something he's always loved but never been able to spend enough time on because of long commute.
I unfortunately have the kind of job which can be done from home, just takes much longer, and which is going to need extra tasks because of the lockdown. Otherwise I would use YouTube to work on a new language or improve my skills in one I already have.

One thing I am doing more is reading. Indulgent reading for pleasure and escapism. Children's books, young adults' books. I am lucky enough to have a large collection, but there is so much out there anyway.

Also giving myself the treat of watching all the nature box sets currently streaming on BBCiPlayer. And Doctor Who. All rationed to one a day so I don't slump into misery.

Ds has just been told his job is closed now. When he wakes I'm going to ask him to devise an exercise programme suitable to middle-aged sedentary female and help me to work through it. Will also help him to clear out an area in the loft so he can do his workouts (preferably without bringing down the ceiling!). I've never stuck to an exercise programme before but maybe with my own personal trainer...

If I had the time, this might also be a moment to start researching dh's family tree. Did that when I was stuck at home as a carer years ago. Not just the genealogy but the places they came from, what they worked with.

Hmmmm88 · 24/03/2020 10:25

My DH has took up water colour painting and drawing me on the other hand have been doing jigsaws.

I would love to try something new but I'm just not very good at most things Grin

species5618 · 24/03/2020 10:53

I've started pottery repairs. I have 6 damaged jugs in front of me and a tin of carbody filler. I've watched every episode of The Repair Shop so how difficult can it be Smile

isseywith4vampirecats · 24/03/2020 10:57

im going to do an online diploma in ancient magic its something im interested in and got the time to do it now
have stocked up on books,
if we get desperate we have a trivial pursuit to play

labazsisgoingmad · 24/03/2020 12:00

if i could get my kindle working i would read as im nearly out of paper books so yes reading is one thing
sort my online music out have some duplicates etc
probably do an online course

mumsnet of course
may resume knitting especially if my etsy shop has to go on hold due to no posting ebay too
housework
sort some muddles we have guess we shall have a pile of stuff for the tip when it reopens along with many others

possumgoddess · 24/03/2020 16:01

I'm working from home so I'm not going to have any more free time than before😞 but as we won't be going out or socialising at the weekend I think I had better spend my time learning how to be a better housekeeper/ironer/gardener. Now I have no excuse not to!
