Two food shopping trips a week?

Coffee234 · 23/03/2020 21:33

Hi. I know this isn't a big issue.
Just wanted to see what people thought and what you will be doing.
I usually do one big click and collect shop and then a small (fruit and milk) shop a few days later. No chance of getting a click and collect slot and I'm thinking it should go to the more needy anyway.

So do you think one big shop and one little shop is ok with the current lockdown.
How are you going to plan you essential food shop now?
?

He specifically said to limit the frequency of essential shopping trips. Do one shop if you can and don’t shop again until you have to

Quarantino · 23/03/2020 21:38

Go once a week if you can. That should give you time to see if you have symptoms arising from the previous shopping trip (assuming you're not going anywhere else) and not go if there's a possibility you have symptoms.

cardibach · 23/03/2020 21:39

Why do you need a second fruit and milk shop? Both those items will last a week. Just buy enough.

ludothedog · 23/03/2020 21:39

I'm seeing how long I can go without going to the shops. Using up tins and freezer stuff. I get milk delivered though. Perhaps you can do the same? Use up what you have and only go to the shops when you have nothing left.

IsadoraQuagmire · 23/03/2020 21:42

It'll have to be ok. It's impossible to get online delivery slots and people who don't have a car and have to get their shopping home on the bus are unlikely to be able to get a week's shopping in one go. Especially as they've reduced the frequency of buses even further, if you end up having to walk home from the supermarket you can't risk buying more than you can comfortably carry.

Quarantino · 23/03/2020 21:42

That's a tough balance though ludo as you'll need stored food if you have to totally self-isolate.

Coffee234 · 23/03/2020 21:44

Thanks all.
I will try to work it out to do one shop. Thinking frozen fruit would be a good idea, it's a struggle to buy fresh fruit which lasts more than a few days.

cardibach by encouraging Coffee234 to buy more that leaves less on the shelves!

What she proposes is reasonable depending on the number of people she is feeding. DP and I are the only ones in our household so going once a week will probably be ok as long as we can buy what we need.

RaininSummer · 23/03/2020 21:45

People who dont drive will need to go more than once a week I imagine.

Purpleartichoke · 23/03/2020 21:45

It also depends on availability. If you go out and discover they have no eggs that day, you will want to go back again.

babybythesea · 23/03/2020 21:45

Also, it assumes the shop will have everything you need at the time you need to go. Which isn’t guaranteed at the moment. Some things you could manage without, but if, as when I went last week, there is no pasta, rice, tissue, loo roll, kitchen roll, tinned tomatoes, pasta sauces, crisps, meat... then you are going to have to go back to get things.

firawla · 23/03/2020 21:46

It depends on the supermarkets putting limits on products, and no delivery slots available. Because as it is, you can’t always easily get a weekly shop in store if you tried!

Wolfiefan · 23/03/2020 21:47

We are doing a big and a top up shop. I’m the one who cooks but can’t shop (vulnerable) so DH goes. We also have the whole household and pets home and limited supplies in shops. We can’t do one mega shop to last the week. (No room in freezer etc.)
I think they’re trying to prevent people going to shop after shop or going twice a day because it’s “essential”

Helendee · 23/03/2020 21:48

Tinned fruit in its own juice (not syrup) is good and lasts forever.

Coffee234 · 23/03/2020 21:48

There is only two of us. The problem is how long the fruit lasts. I will not be buying more than I need,I couldn't even get any mince last week, there was, no meat on the shelves at all.

I totally understand that at the moment there are worse problems than not being able to choose food though!

omg
You do one big click and collect shop
Then do a small shop

So now your plan is to do one big shop
And then do a small shop

Just do ONE shop, meal plan, eat what's in your cupboards/freezer.

daisypond · 23/03/2020 21:51

We shop quite often because we don’t have a car and have to carry the shopping home by hand - for a family of five.

woodhill · 23/03/2020 21:54

You struggle to get a click & collect slot too

NumberMonkey · 23/03/2020 21:55

It’s interesting how this will work - there are 6 of us here including 3 teenagers and 2 adults. I’m limited 2 loaves of bread per shop - they’re not going to last a week! For us to do a weekly shop, the limits will need to be lifted but then will that cause people to stockpile?

At the moment we’ve been doing a daily shop for the bits we need that day, walking to the supermarket.

I’m not really sure how we go from here as there are no supermarket delivery slots available that I can find.

Coffee234 · 23/03/2020 21:56

Nursebuttercup
I don't really have food stocked up. We eat what I buy. Freezer has batch meals in which I eat for lunches.

OP posts:
Coffee234 · 23/03/2020 21:58

I know about the click and collect slot, I have given up. I'm sure there are vulnerable people who need them, so I'm not trying anymore.

I'm shopping for 3 households as buying for us (me, DH and DC), my elderly DM and our elderly neighbours. Local supermarket is limiting number of same items you can buy, so fingers crossed we don't want the same things, if I can actually buy anything we want. I will probably have to do more than one shop a week to hopefully get everything we need.

Pollony · 23/03/2020 21:58

How are you meant to buy milk for a week when you are only one item of milk at a time?

Doobigetta · 23/03/2020 22:04

It’s going to be impossible to find a balance between minimising trips and only buying what you need at the time that will satisfy the critics. If you’re thinking about it and trying to be sensible you’re doing better than a pretty large proportion of people, so I wouldn’t agonise. I definitely don’t think there’s anything wrong with two trips a week.

delilahbucket · 23/03/2020 22:05

I normally do once per week but I couldn't carry more than one milk as I had to shop in town on my own and was laden with bags (only just recovering from the strain on my poor body four days later) so will have to go on Wednesday for more. Might just go to a small shop to grab it. Will then go and do a full shop on Friday again and hopefully that will be it for the following week.
