Having to go out and buy a printer?

So day one of "home schooling" and I get a nice bunch of work sent through via email for 2 children.
Most of the work for one child is worksheets that he won't be able to do unless in paper form. I don't have a laptop/PC either. I have reserved a printer in argos to go and pick up but obviously this is going against the advice of all but essential journeys.
With work up in the air as I'm off with the kids I would rather not spend the £50 either.
I'm just having a moan, I know this is unprecedented and I want to support the children while they're off.

Why didn't you order it from amazon?

You could just try and do it all electronically and further impact your chld's education. But why would you want to make things harder?

Lllot5 · 23/03/2020 12:48

Well it’s just as well you’ve the £50 to spend really. I know lots of people that wouldn’t have it.
Not really thought that one through have they?

Lolly86 · 23/03/2020 12:50

I ordered a printer and bulk load of paper from Amazon a few days ago and had it delivered next day. Got a printer plus 2500 sheets of A4 for around £50

AvoidingRealHumans · 23/03/2020 12:53

@Findumdum1 sorry I thought getting a printer would be making it easier for my children to do the work they've been set Confused.
Picking it up means I can get it today, I'm assuming each day more work that needs to be printed will be set? Waiting for deliveries will leave me with a backlog of worksheets to do.

Amazon and other places are nearly sold out of home printers. I ordered one last night from Currys and it says 5-10 days for home delivery

AvoidingRealHumans · 23/03/2020 12:57

@Lolly86 oh really? I will look, don't usually look on amazon as I don't have prime but could possibly get a trial.

I'm having a number of issues with the homeschooling.. Things not logging in, pc not talking to the printer, 2 kids but only 1 pc plus I'm meant to be wfh setting work for my own classes. I think we just try to do what we can.. I have a few English and maths work books my kids can use, whatever you can manage will be appreciated. I know from the teacher end of things, that as a school that is not very tech savvy, we've had to scramble about to get staff up to speed and set stuff up. It's a hit hit and miss but will sort itself out.

caz114 · 23/03/2020 12:59

@avioding real humans

just be quick and make sure you have tons of paper and ink.

formerbabe · 23/03/2020 13:00

Yes my dcs stuff needs to be printed plus I only have one laptop for them to work on so need to print stuff otherwise one can't work. Luckily we have one already...but told dh to buy extra ink.

I have no idea how those without a laptop and printer or money to buy one will cope.

Ariela · 23/03/2020 13:01

Yes, don't forget the cartridges in the printer will be budget half volume ones.

strawberrylipgloss · 23/03/2020 13:02

My Argos does same day home delivery

TheDizzyRascal · 23/03/2020 13:02

I did the same on Saturday, ran in, collected it, back out in minutes. You've gotta do what you've gotta do xxx

lemonsandlimes123 · 23/03/2020 13:05

FFS get it delivered. Literally it matters not one tiny bit if your kids are a day behind on their worksheets. It doesn't even matter if they don't do any of the bloody worksheets.

AvoidingRealHumans · 23/03/2020 13:05

I'm quite rural and I don't know if that's why or argos have stopped delivery but nothing is available for delivery, only collection.

It is a HP model I'm looking at, comes with ink and a pay £2 monthly service that send you ink when running low.
We have a pack of printer paper as I buy it for my son to draw on.
Its annoying but I can see I'm not the only one needing to print stuff off. If I asked they would probably print it for me to collect but that defeats the point of staying off. One trip to argos and then I have it

Argos have tape over the floor so unless you’re ill, go get it!

Shahira78 · 23/03/2020 13:29

We'll prob all be needing a printer soon. People in Italy and France can no longer go out without an official printed document stating the reason why you're leaving the house.

EvilPea · 23/03/2020 13:29

Yes go to Argos and pick it up. They pay their taxes unlike amazon.

Fuckmesideways · 23/03/2020 13:31

@Lllot5 - yes, because they’ve had chance to think things through properly. Douche

TheOrigBrave · 23/03/2020 13:34

If your child is of the age that they need printed worksheets rather than working on the computer, then they must be quite young, thus a couple of days of missed worksheets will not matter one teeny tiny bit.

Summerfalls · 23/03/2020 13:36

Ds school are using google school to set work each day which I did print off but the teacher has said it doesn’t need to be printed off they have to write the work out in their books anyway, could this be an option instead of printing it off?

wanderings · 23/03/2020 13:36

Why didn't you order it from amazon?
Because the holier than thou armchair experts on here are telling us that everything you order from Amazon is putting their staff's lives at risk.

Sgtmajormummy · 23/03/2020 13:37

I’d get another pack of paper while you’re there, OP.

I have a similar HP instant ink contract, but remember that 100 pages also includes double sided as two pages. So try to be parsimonious!

DD is on her third week of distance learning (Italy) and we’ve learned to send PowerPoint presentations direct to “Books” on the IPad. She can read them there. Also multiple issues of the same material (ahem).

You could print on scrap paper if it’s just one side. Judicious use of her homework diary (“Ex.5 p29” does not need to be printed out!) screen shots and Post-its will also cut down on printing.

MinkowskisButterfly · 23/03/2020 13:38

Argos do same day delivery, £3.95 and you could get them to leave on doorstop so no contact.

TinyTornado · 23/03/2020 13:39

I wouldn’t buy it or print worksheets. This is work set by teachers at short notice to keep children busy. But some nice open ended toys (magnetic bricks/ plasticine/ dough) and enjoy the money you could have spent on printing worksheets- which you will more than likely end up arguing over anyway.

SpunBodgeSquarepants · 23/03/2020 13:56

I can't afford a printer - I'm going to make up worksheets myself by hand. Granted I only have one DC though so won't take me too long.
