Having to go out and buy a printer?

So day one of "home schooling" and I get a nice bunch of work sent through via email for 2 children.
Most of the work for one child is worksheets that he won't be able to do unless in paper form. I don't have a laptop/PC either. I have reserved a printer in argos to go and pick up but obviously this is going against the advice of all but essential journeys.
With work up in the air as I'm off with the kids I would rather not spend the £50 either.
I'm just having a moan, I know this is unprecedented and I want to support the children while they're off.

I've joined amazon prime just for one month (£7.99 I believe) I've then gone into my settings and immediately cancelled the auto renewal so it doesn't cost more.
All the stuff I'll need to buy this month outweighs the cost (I've already gained it back) and I don't need to go out. I abhor amazon, if I'm honest, but needs must at the moment.

Argos will deliver. What's more they do it quickly and you may not have to pay for it all at once.

Think of it as an investment, it will be useful when the current crisis is over (when).

Aquafresca · 23/03/2020 14:24

Are you sure you need to print it all? It's going to be lot if pages each week. Our school has advised against printing it unless we absolutely want to. They have offered notebooks to record child's learning though. Try checking with them before you decide on buying one.

I ordered some school work books from Amazon to try to keep the printing to a minimum. DD is looking at the worksheet from a device and then doing it in her workbook.

We have HP Instant Ink. We got a free trial of 300 pages a month, which is fab at the moment and DH got some more printer paper last week. The price increases as the number of pages you print a month increases, you need to keep an eye on it so you don't pay over the odds. Clearly HP are out to make money and have worked their prices out cleverly. Not to put you off, I think HP Instant Ink is a brilliant idea.

Meant lot of pages coming in each week.. Silly typo error Grin

Sgtmajormummy · 23/03/2020 14:45

Just a warning.
Here in Italy, Amazon are now saying they are giving priority to “essential materials” and that normal delivery “might experience some delays”.

They also refuse to deliver to addresses of businesses that are no longer allowed to operate (as of today).

starfishmummy · 23/03/2020 14:58

Just do what you can. If they're primary kids they'll get as much out of helping you doing things round the home like cooking and gardening. Just do some reading and a bit of numeracy each day

dootball · 23/03/2020 15:03

In the long term school children are always needing to print things out anyway, so it's not going to be wasted money on the printer.

niffynoonoo · 23/03/2020 15:20

on the worksheets, is there near the top the phrase "enable editing"? click on it and they can do it ON the document.

save after. no printing.

Metoyoutoo · 23/03/2020 15:28

Think you’ll find Argos does the same as Amazon. Most companies do.

Starbuck8419 · 23/03/2020 15:30

I had to go and get a printer. I didn’t want to spend 40 quid on one either but it’ll help my daughter keep learning.

EvilPea · 23/03/2020 15:51

argos is owned by sainsburys.

Not known for their tax avoidance, unlike Cadbury’s, amazon or Starbucks.

June2008 · 23/03/2020 15:54

Your school should be providing work in a suitable format. There will be a skeleton staff in school that can answer the phone if you phone up and ask for the sheets to be sent (or collect them).

We asked all our students if they had suitable computer / laptop / printer etc and if not have provided them with paper work packs. Given that we (teachers)are all mostly in on a rota they should be able to do that going forward. Many people simply wouldn't be able to afford it.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 23/03/2020 15:58

with Argos, you can get it delivered to Sainsburys - do some food shopping = essential journey Grin

I placed an order with Amazon at about 11pm, and was amazed to have it delivered at 10am this morning. Delivery driver (at a distance) said it was lots easier finding everyone home to take in parcels!

ChiaraRimini · 23/03/2020 16:00

You don't have to use the stuff the school suggests, I've ordered a maths workbook for £6 off amazon as I had exactly this problem, she can just write in it. They have them for each year group at primary level.

theswordthatdangles · 23/03/2020 16:08

If you contact the school and tell them you cannot print it, they should be able to print and post it to you. The school I work at has printed off and posted work to all pupils who they know or think will be unable to access a computer and/or internet.

AvoidingRealHumans · 23/03/2020 17:15

I went I to town and got it. The argos is in sainsbury's and it was like a ghost town - very eerie. Usually have to drive round to get a space.
It was nice to see people are taking notice of the social distancing as no one was out (apart from meBlush) . I paid on a self serve machine and the staff member left it on a counter for me to pick up so I came into no contact with anyone.
As others said, I will no doubt need to print things in future, I usually do it at work so hopefully this is an investment.
Now to set the bloody thing up.

Well done you, glad you got it.

FunkyKingston · 24/03/2020 00:08

It doesn't even matter if they don't do any of the bloody worksheets.

As my mother (ex-teacher) would say towards the end of term, I've set them a wordsearch and told them it was for the Inspector, didn't tell them it was for the refuge inspector. I suspect the worksheets will be similarly thoroughly marked.
