How much work are you getting done WFH?

PlomBear · 23/03/2020 11:18

I’m currently watching This Morning in my PJs. DH is “WFH” playing a computer game.

The organisation we work for is struggling with capacity, we’ve been told to spend only limited amounts of time online to allow others to get on.

DS 4, is playing with Birdie Friend.

Next up: Good Karma Hospital and Belgravia

I work in postgraduate recruitment and admissions - nobody is applying to come to the UK right now with all of this uncertainty. I'd usually spend my days in the office processing applications, answering a flood of emails and chasing up outstanding documents.

This last week I've had a maximum of two applications a day plus maybe one email - usually asking if they can withdraw or defer their offer.

Things are very quiet but I'm doing what I can. I'm also writing my MSc dissertation so I've been using the downtime to work on that rather than veg in front of Netflix.

Areallthenamestaken · 23/03/2020 14:28

I'm a teacher working from home and I've barely stopped to eat since 9am. I feel like my workload is heavier now than it was when schools were open. We've just been sent a massive list of things to do while we're off as well.

I'm quite enjoying getting on top of paperwork though.

Stronger76 · 23/03/2020 14:36

I've just done my first ever wfh day. 2 teenagers eating all the WiFi has been hard. Much less work for me to do because of cv so catching up on mindless admin

5foot5 · 23/03/2020 14:48

This is my first day of it and so far so good. We are having a team meeting via Skype every morning. I am managing to get stuff done but I can foresee some areas which might prove difficult, we will just have to see how it goes.

DH started WFH last week and seems to be managing. From Wednesday DD will also be here.

I am using the dining room table and DH has decided to work in the living room so we don't disturb each other. DD thinks she might use the kitchen as she just has a laptop not a big external monitor like DH and I.

chocoholico · 23/03/2020 14:57

not much today. I am supposed to home school m DC too (one with pretty complex learning needs ands and autism).

I will probably stuff home schooling from tomorrow on and focus on my job. after all, it's our only income - hopefully also once this crisis is over.

Bit sick of my Sahm friends and all their wanky Facebook posts though how great they are doing with home schooling and telling others how important it is to keep the learning up. urghh

Treaclepie19 · 23/03/2020 15:02

My husband is none stop working. He does his hours and then comes downstairs.
Our 4yo is so puzzled.

Treaclepie19 · 23/03/2020 15:03

@chocoholico if it helps I'm a SAHM and I'm doing none of that. It's annoying me seeing so many people bragging. It won't take long for the novelty to wear off I'm sure.
(Could just be bitter because I'm doing a shit job)

“If you are having connectivity issues, is there not other work you can do?”

How dare you. It is incredibly fucking stressful trying to manage my high workload, directly caused by Coronavirus as we try to manage the impact on students, when I do not have the functionality available to me. I am doing the work instructed by my manager, who could well be someone in a similar position to you as I also work in a university. She is aware of the connectivity issues and is supporting her team to do the work they can, but we work mostly on systems that require the VPN and there is limited work outside that to share around. Of course I am trying to do other things whilst the network is down, but given that my institution chose not to put the resources into making it easier for people in my role to work from home (and I have been instructed to do so by HR as I am 37 weeks pregnant), I am doing my best whilst also sharing the care of a toddler at home with my husband.

lilmishap · 23/03/2020 15:11

I've had mine open since 11am and so far I've done about a sentence.
I am genuinely worrying right now, the only way I can see this working is if I stay up every night to do it all when the boys are in bed, they just don't get what "mummy is working can you give me ten minutes" actually means right now.

It might be easier when the sun isn't glaring through the house reminding them they could be out doing fun stuff

HillAreas · 23/03/2020 15:22

I’ve just spent 3 hours pinned to the sofa while sick baby DS napped on me. Normally I’d try to put him down to get on with things but he’s had a cough for days and he sleeps better curled up in my arms.
So yeah, not a lot of work done. Luckily I can do the project I’m working on whenever so I’ll make up for it later on. Must be so hard for people with multiple small kids and actual deadlines to meet Sad

PlomBear · 23/03/2020 15:26

Some of my work is classed as Secret and I don’t have the software to do that at home.

I'm officially on leave for a couple of days, so haven't tried to wfh yet.

We were originally planning to take turns being in the office, as IT didn't have enough phones initially. Boss called to say I need to go in to colledct a phone and we are all wfh as far as possible for now.

I'm going to try and stick to usual hours, luckily my DC are mid to late teens.

Homer28 · 23/03/2020 15:50

@NotNegan I'm just watching Jane the Virgin on a loop!

also #teamrafael!

MandalaYogaTapestry · 23/03/2020 15:52

I am working in the same way as in the office, but without the 2.5 hr commute. Loving every minute

BiddyPop · 23/03/2020 16:03

I WFH last week 1 day, DH and DD have been WFH and SchoolAtHome for almost 2 weeks now.

They are both surprisingly productive - DH always is anyway, but DD has been sticking to timetable hours and doing schoolwork for the full school day, although is then relaxing after 4pm (and needing exercise, it's like "walking the dog" except "footballing the student" at that hour!!) Grin

So I actually got more done than I often do in the office. Where phonecalls interrupt me, people dropping by to chat, conversations in the outside office getting heated etc.

BiddyPop · 23/03/2020 16:06

DD is doing online classes with 2 teachers in school, and then the rest is more worksheets and independent learning/study in her other subjects. There's a little explanation and help required in 2 subjects in particular, but we are not "homeschooling" her in general - we're letting her get on with the work set by her actual teachers so we don't get in the way of that.

MrsZola · 23/03/2020 16:35

Very little - can't access the server (too many people on at the same time) and the online app is down, same problem I think.
🙄

NotNegan · 23/03/2020 16:43

@Homer28

I'm just on season three. It gets ridiculous but I can't stop watching!

Casino218 · 23/03/2020 16:49

Too much. Having to remember to stand up and walk around!

Homer28 · 23/03/2020 16:52

@NotNegan its enjoyable quaratine fodder. Its light and I think that's what's needed the moment. DM me when you finish lol

Treaclepie19 · 23/03/2020 16:58

@Homer28 loved Jane the Virgin. I'm so sad it's finished.
I was totally team Raphael as well.

IceKitten · 23/03/2020 17:01

I'm part time normally, so instead of going to work three days a week I'm spreading my work over five days so that I have time to help the DC (two secondary and one primary) when they have questions. It's going ok so far (day 1!).

NotNegan · 23/03/2020 17:32

@Homer28

I've also been watching The Walking Dead (which I feel is preparing me), but it's not suitable for a toddler so Jane is perfect.

EerieSilence · 23/03/2020 17:41

Actually more than before. More efficient because there's no social talk, no distractions, so I just sit here and work work work.
We are extremely busy and nobody is checking whether we work and how much, it shows. I wish I could be back in the office to relax a bit when having a coffee and chat with other colleagues.

EmpressMcSchnozzle · 23/03/2020 18:03

I love your posts, PlomBear, they make me smile. I too, however, am wondering about the Prophecies of Birdie Friend. He definitely seems to be much more accurate than Nostradamus and various self-professed online astrologers and "psychics" who all forecast that 2020 would be an amazing year...Although I suppose in some ways they were right.

Just out of curiosity, have you, I mean Birdie Friend, managed to predict other things in the past? (And what's happened since Deeps visited, or do I need to go and look at a different thread?)

P.S. Thank you for reminding me about Belgravia.
