To send my son to nursery next week

namechangecareerchange · 22/03/2020 20:07

Having a bit of a fall out with ex-DH and just want to check whether IABU.

DS is 4. Nursery is open Tuesday-Thurs (I don't work mon or fri anyway so I can look after him no probs as normal, just at home like everyone else) for children of key workers.

So here it is. Nursery have confirmed that ex-DH qualifies as a key worker. I agree that strictly he does, but I don't think it's in the "spirit": he does work in food production, but he's a scientist researching into producing food in 20 years time. That's not a key worker right now!

I've said DS shouldn't go. My work are understanding and I am happy to have him home with me tues-thurs as I figure it out just like everyone else.

Ex-DH says he qualifies and therefore DS should go to nursery.

Just want to check what you would all do. Our jobs are (thankfully - we are so lucky) very secure, so there is no worry there.

No. He only goes if he NEEDS to be there.

namechangecareerchange · 22/03/2020 20:09

Couldn't have said it better - or more succinctly!!

I think if children can stay home we have a social responsibility to do that.
So I agree wih you.

twoheaped · 22/03/2020 20:09

Are you a key worker?
Only if both parent's are key workers should the child go in.

LGY1 · 22/03/2020 20:09

If you are happy to have him I wouldn’t send him.
DH and I are both classed as key workers (who are working from home) but we won’t be sending son to nursery. It’s a breeding ground for germs at the best of times!

ScorpionQueen · 22/03/2020 20:09

Not if you can care for him, no. Why would you expose your child if you didn't have to? This is meant to be emergency childcare for essential workers. People are risking themselves and their families to provide it.

Wolfiefan · 22/03/2020 20:10

If he can stay home then he does. It’s not about being entitled to go. It’s about nurseries and schools being open only for those who have no other choice.

MashedPotatoBrainz · 22/03/2020 20:10

Your ex is a dick.

Knoxinbox · 22/03/2020 20:10

The government guidance is clear. It is EMERGENCY CHILDCARE if you have no other option!! You should only take up tr place if your child cannot be cared for at home safely.

yours can. Do not send him

catgirl1976 · 22/03/2020 20:10

YANBU I don’t think he should go

namechangecareerchange · 22/03/2020 20:10

Ah sorry @twoheaped nope. I'm not - in any reading of it. I'm definitely no use to society!!

I thought it was the child who.had two key workers as parents or a single parent who was a key worker by that I assume it was a parent with residency ? Quite frankly I don't understand why anyone would send their child to.school.or Nursery unless they had no.other choice?

Knoxinbox · 22/03/2020 20:11

My DD also qualifies because she’s on the SEND register. School emailed us to offer her a place. She is REALLY struggling with the change of routine but I am a SAHM so she’s staying put at home

DioneTheDiabolist · 22/03/2020 20:11

Dont send him. Key workers in front facing roles are at higher risk, this means that their children are at a higher risk of CV19. Why would anyone put their child at that risk if they didnt have to?

sunshinemachine · 22/03/2020 20:12

if he doesnt need to b there then dont send him

twoheaped · 22/03/2020 20:13

@namechangecareerchange just cos you're not on the list does not mean you are no use to society!

Fairenuff · 22/03/2020 20:14

Does your dh understand that if too many unneccessary spaces are taken up in school, they might not be able to manage and have to close completely.

SleepingStandingUp · 22/03/2020 20:15

It isn't about taking up your entitlement and getting your quota of education. It's about putting your child somewhere secure IF you need them

pudcat · 22/03/2020 20:16

The fewer that go the better as all nurseries etc have to keep the children 2 metres apart

x2boys · 22/03/2020 20:18

Also I don't thinking about wether you technically qualify or not my son has a full EHCP and according to the government was entitled to still go to school.yet his SEN school closed on Friday until further notice so where would be go? Not that I wanted him to go anyway .

Keepcalmanddoyourbit · 22/03/2020 20:21

The provision is emergency childcare for those who have no other possible options. Tell that to your selfish twatty ex. I knew this would happen when that list was published.

MrsTumbletap · 22/03/2020 20:22

Show him this and tell him to stop being ridiculous, it isn't some cool entitlement to free childcare. It's emergency childcare for the most vulnerable students. Your child isn't vulnerable and in need of emergency childcare.

Keep your child at home.

They couldn't make it clearer

AnneShirleysNewDress · 22/03/2020 20:28

My eldest DD is on the SEN register and both DP and I are key workers. She still isn't going to school.

bridgetreilly · 22/03/2020 20:31

The advice is very clear: you only send children in if they can't be cared for at home. Yours can, so he shouldn't go.
