Supermarket NHS times

Tiredoutteacher2020 · 22/03/2020 17:59

I'm a key worker (teacher). All the supermarkets near me now have an NHS worker hour from 7-8am. This is the time I'd shop on the way to work. The shops are too busy on my return and I don't feel safe when the shops are busy. The shops are also empty by 6pm on my return. So when do I shop? Weekends are manic and busy. I understand NHS should take priority but without children being looked after many key workers wouldn't be able to work. I feel a bit let down and a bit worried about staying healthy as unlikely I'll get fresh food now. Aibu?

Its only on certain days isn't it? Here is on Sunday . Is your school open.

Tiredoutteacher2020 · 22/03/2020 18:04

It's monday to friday here. My school is open for key worker children. I have to be in.

Thing is it seems everyone has a reason why they be allowed a special shop time..,the line has got to be drawn somewhere.

NHS are the priority as if you or your family gets this you are going to need them

MonsteraCheeseplant · 22/03/2020 18:06

Take your id badge and explain and i'm sure they'll let you in.

Tiredoutteacher2020 · 22/03/2020 18:06

I just think EVERYONE should get s fair chance.

Many of us are doing important jobs that don’t get reserved shopping times (we have the same set-up here). I’m not in the UK but I’ve heard that smaller, local shops have supplies. Or you can ask someone to get you some stuff when they go. Try farm shops for fresh produce. We all have to be creative. We might not be able to get our usual brand of cheese, our favorite apples, or the meat we were hoping to buy but it’s not a permanent situation. If we have to live on canned food for a few weeks it won’t kill us.

Moreisnnogedag · 22/03/2020 18:07

Can you not go on the weekend? Almost everyone is now flipping onto a rolling rota with 12 hr shifts which means that it’s not feasible to go at other times. You do have options - you’re just not comfortable with them and that’s your own personal preference.

What @P1nkHeartLovesCake said.

Edsfuturewife · 22/03/2020 18:08

I work in a supermarket.
We genuinely don't have the staff or provision to look out for everyone and I've been close to tears every day this week, struggling to help those who desperately need it. :(
With all the companies employing extra staff and those like me, who are working twelve and thirteen hours plus, it's improving I promise.

HappyHammy · 22/03/2020 18:08

Can you get to the shops after work about 4pm.

Tiredoutteacher2020 · 22/03/2020 18:09

I went yesterday. It wasn't safe. People were only a foot or so apart as it was packed. No bread, milk, fruit, veg, loo roll, tins, rice, pasta, vitamins, lentils, canned veg, canned fruit, meat etc.

OP posts:
Tiredoutteacher2020 · 22/03/2020 18:10

No I can't go at 4. I finish my shift at 6.

Tiredoutteacher2020 · 22/03/2020 18:11

I'm working 12+ hours a day too. 10 hours in school and then 2 hours or so ringing families, adding to online learning, marking online learning etc

Tiredoutteacher2020 · 22/03/2020 18:13

Brit - there's no canned food in my area. Shelves are empty of cans etc

I think they are likely to add hours to over keyworkers

I feel guilty that I shall be buying my mums food at the time we are allocated but she isn’t to go out anymore

Another thing for me to feel guilty about ....

Tiredoutteacher2020 · 22/03/2020 18:13

I have no problem eating different stuff but I need to stay healthy for the kids

HappyHammy · 22/03/2020 18:14

10 hours in school sounds a lot. What are your hours. Can you go out during your lunchbreak or ask a colleague to get a few bits in.

Tiredoutteacher2020 · 22/03/2020 18:16

8-6. No lunch break as many staff are self isolating due to illness or underlying conditions.

OP posts:
HappyHammy · 22/03/2020 18:18

You are entitled to a break.

Tiredoutteacher2020 · 22/03/2020 18:27

And who covers it when we are so short staffed? The kids just entertain themselves and stay perfectly safe?

OP posts:
HappyHammy · 22/03/2020 18:31

Is the Head able to offer any advice.

Tiredoutteacher2020 · 22/03/2020 18:35

I can certainly check with her HappyHammy. To make things worse we need to provide school dinners for those attending and our deliveries have been cancelled. No idea how we'll manage it with the staffing we've got.

OP posts:
HappyHammy · 22/03/2020 18:38

If the staff get no breaks, are massively short staffed and theres no food for the kids and staff then maybe the Head needs to ask if the school is safe to remain open.

Tiredoutteacher2020 · 22/03/2020 18:39

Sorry I know I sound defeatist but I'm worried about my school kids and also about my own meals/staying healthy for them.
