Supermarket NHS times

I'm a key worker (teacher). All the supermarkets near me now have an NHS worker hour from 7-8am. This is the time I'd shop on the way to work. The shops are too busy on my return and I don't feel safe when the shops are busy. The shops are also empty by 6pm on my return. So when do I shop? Weekends are manic and busy. I understand NHS should take priority but without children being looked after many key workers wouldn't be able to work. I feel a bit let down and a bit worried about staying healthy as unlikely I'll get fresh food now. Aibu?

Try farm shops for fresh produce. We all have to be creative. We might not be able to get our usual brand of cheese, our favorite apples, or the meat we were hoping to buy but it’s not a permanent situation. If we have to live on canned food for a few weeks it won’t kill us.
Why do people keep posting stuff like this? What farm shops? These do not exist everywhere. I’ve never heard of them. What canned food? Canned food is the food that is unavailable.

After a week of local mini-stores being empty of bread and vegetables, I went out early to be at a big supermarket on Saturday morning, All had ginormous queues.
Gave up, drove home, then went to local large sainsburys, probably 10.30ish. No queues, not problematically crowded inside, shelves not full but reasonably stocked for a weeks shopping unless you needed to get loo roll, and plenty of vegetables on the street market too.

Problem is that if you're now working all week, will be difficult until next weekend. Do you have a freezer?

There are dozens of professions who are burnt out and at risk but none compare to being a front line NHS worker right now. I genuinely sit on the side of compassion in posts but this one has riled me. I wouldNt swap places with a nurse or dr for any money in the world right now. Complaining because you can’t go to your usual supermarket at the usual time is ridiculous.

You might have to look after someone’s child at school but think of those who are going into homes where there is no hygiene, increased violence, extremely vulnerable elderly people. It’s not a race to the bottom, I’m just trying to demonstrate that right now there is a 2 tiered situation with key workers. Our NHS medical professionals and the rest of us. To feel entitled to the same support is entitled and narrow minded.

Whatever support society can give you right now is a drop in the ocean compared to what you deserve. Thank you for what you’re doing and designated shopping times are not begrudged by all your non medical colleagues.

QuaverQueen what an awful situation to be in

I totally understand dh is working ridiculously long hours as he is involved in providing medical equipment to hospitals so he certainly can't go shopping.

I was leaving at 4 last week to try and pick bits up on way home Sainsbury's was stripped bare on Friday we ended up with takeaway but I nearly cried wondering what on earth I was going to feed the kids.

Biggest problem was I couldn't even get sanitary towels for my daughters - because all the supermarkets were out of stock people had gone and cleared most corner shops out as well.

I was at a different supermarket for opening at 6 on Saturday the queue was ridiculous by the time I got in most shelves had been emptied and still no sanitary towels.

Several different shops were visited to get enough food to last a few days.

Supermarkets have now started changing opening hours from 8-8. With Sainsbury's ( the one between where I live and where I work ) being nhs staff from 8-9 every week day.

My online food delivery contained 16 items none of which were food.

I work 8-6 now as we are providing child care and need to cover the hours the wraparound care club would have been open.

We work all day - as skeleton staff no lunch break - we are expected to eat dinner and supervise the kids.

I know the shops will be empty by time I finish work so will have to rely on friends getting stuff for me but feel guilty because it means them having to go out

I just want the panic buying to stop.

And I want biscuits to go with my cup of tea I'm drinking

There is no actual food shortage hence this problem will be short lived. If you can manage for another week or 2 you will probably find the shops well stocked with hardly any customers as everyone will have run out of space.
Shops near me have plenty of food but still queues at opening time. If you go mid morning or lunchtime it is quiet and still plenty on the shelves.
Can you ask a friend to help for the next week or 2?

BooseysMom · 22/03/2020 21:11

Slightly off topic, is it me or have supermarkets hiked their prices during this crisis? My shopping bill was huge and there were no offers like they usually have. I paid £3 for 10 fish fingers in waitrose and they were the same price in tesco!

eveoha · 22/03/2020 21:14

Bread in Co op has massively increased in price HmmAngry

BooseysMom · 22/03/2020 21:16

Hmmm, not just me then Hmm

QuaverQueen · 22/03/2020 21:27

Thanks @Keeva2017 it’s an awful situation and I don’t know what to do for the best.

I think some posters forget it’s not just the job you do, the one without proper protective equipment, but the risk to your families too.

RedHelenB · 22/03/2020 22:24

After school care should be on a rota.wht cant the after school club staff still work? A 10 hour day is excessive with no breaks and you need to put your foot down if this is the case.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 22/03/2020 22:32

BooseysMom Yes the have increased their prices

Or they keep changing prices .... so you buy it at a lower price one day a few days later it’s gone up again then down I always look at every price as on a budget

Tellmetruth4 · 22/03/2020 22:48

The NHS staff needs trump everyone else’s. I understand you’re scared but nobody wants to be in a cramped supermarket. You’ll have to go very early, very late, at the weekend or ask someone to pick some bits up for you.

Sounds like you’re panicking about the virus and being resentful of the medical key workers.
