My neighbours have found the solution to not visiting vulnerable people

It really is genius! 😷😄
Next door family have had sore throats and runny noses.
Done the right thing by isolating themselves. (Mum, dad and 2 primary age kids).
Her parents have called around for about an hour. Nothing urgent. Just wanted to say hello and chat.
So they stood in the back garden and all yelled at each other through a crack in the window!
They have been isolated for a week now. Parents live a few miles away, so had to drive here. All are fine with tech/phone/facetime

Heard on a news bulletin some wonderful woman is going to lead her very sociable pony, who loves attention, up to the windows of socially isolating lone older neighbours in small village, so they can enjoy his antics.

So sweet. Made me go a bit teary!

@JaniceBattersby,
I'm so sorry for both of you. Bloody Corona. Sending my thoughts Flowers

JeanMichelBisquiat · 21/03/2020 15:05

My lovely dad has added some stuff to his supermarket order for me, so when he comes round we'll have a chat from a good distance (he's in his 70s and locked down a couple of weeks ago, and we're self isolating).

Just to say, runny nose is SPECIFICALLY mentioned in the WHO's list of corona symptoms, albeit occuring in a minority of patients. @YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus please be more cautious in saying stuff like this - it's really dangerous for people to think it's definitely not corona when in fact it might well be.

They need to learn British Sign Language.

Everyone needs to learn BSL!
It should be taught to children like foreign languages are.
Sorry deaf family member so I promote where I can :)

ForestYeti · 21/03/2020 15:09

We’re doing same with my 80 year old parents tomorrow although I think it’ll be more like ten minutes than half an hour

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 21/03/2020 15:12

CatkinToadflax a bit extreme I know, but if they could get an old widow or sheet of Perspex, they could make a window in the fence and enjoy a cup of tea, ‘together’. 😁

FreezerBird · 21/03/2020 15:16

My mum went into a care home just before Christmas so this is her first mother's Day since. Only one sister and one brother are local but brother is self isolating. Mum's room is on the first floor and looks over the car park so my sister is planning to go to the car park and shout.

I have requested video footage of this.

rabbitwoman · 21/03/2020 15:18

My lovely mum has figured out how to video call with whatsap. But for some reason, she has the microphone on mute and cannot work out how to unmute. So I phone her on the landline at the same time....

And its lovely to see her face but I would much prefer to physically go to her house and stand in her garden for a 20 minute chat. But no way of doing that without trains/ buses.....

RiftGibbon · 21/03/2020 15:18

We've just "called" on friends.
Their garden backs onto local parkland, so we stood in the park, and they stood in their garden and we had a chat.
Other people in the park didn't all seen to get the idea of keeping distance so I am now muddy from stepping back as they were passing on bikes/with dogs.

bingowingsmcgee · 21/03/2020 15:20

totally the poor widow!!!

AutumnalLeaves38 · 21/03/2020 15:23

@SpokeTooSoon

Depending on age of child, you could also get Grandparent & Grandchild a copy each of the same book.

So your DC can turn the pages themself to look at pictures (& follow along with the words, if old enough?) as well as hearing a favourite voice & seeing a comforting face.

Works well with my Mum and nieces.

AlexaAmbidextra · 21/03/2020 15:26

but if they could get an old widow

Oh bless her heart, that poor old widow. She knew she’d come in useful some day. 😂😂😂

Nat6999 · 21/03/2020 15:27

My brother & sil called today to drop our mum's mother's day card & chocolates off, we are self isolating due to coughs & colds, they left the gifts on the doorstep & stood at the end of the drive talking via mobile phone.

Nofoolfornoone · 21/03/2020 15:28

My sister has been self isolating for about 2 months already has she’s got multiple health problems. My parents visit her and sit on the other side of the window and they chat that way . Neighbours must think they are bonkers 🤣

Mummylin · 21/03/2020 15:32

I havee this very thing with my adult ds this am. He sat in his car in the road and I went armed with my little stool and sat by my front gates ! Before I went out he had put some beautiful flowers by the door, but phoned me to tell me.
It was so weird, but I am also so happy he came round. I was paranoid about the distance, but he told me we were at least 25 ft apart ! Very very odd.

peridito · 21/03/2020 15:48

Such lovely ,clever ideas .

But this is one of my favourites .

she blew the candles out through the letter box

Devlesko · 21/03/2020 15:55

my dh and dd visited mil and her dh yesterday.
They went straight round the back and sat at opposite ends of the garden, as it was lovely weather.
Mine are hopefully doing that for mothers day.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 21/03/2020 15:59

totally the poor widow!!!

Oh bless her heart, that poor old widow. She knew she’d come in useful some day.

BlushGrin I hadn’t a clue what both of you meant at first. As a widow, I’ve finally found a new role in life. I’m about to hire myself out. Grin

dementedma · 21/03/2020 16:00

Mum lives on her own so i have to go in with food etc and make sure shes ok. Lots of handwashing and keeping distance, no touching etc

rosie39forever · 21/03/2020 16:00

We've just taken my elderly parents a few bits round, we sat in the conservatory with the patio doors open and they sat in the kitchen 3 meters away and had a chat. It's a really strange feeling having to keep you distance but it must be done.

jinxpixie · 21/03/2020 16:04

My mum is in a care home and we have just had a phone chat through her window and she saw the dogs. Felt a bit like talking to a prisoner in an American movie but better than nothing. Cheered her up a bit :)

thegreylady · 21/03/2020 16:08

My dd and family came to check on us today. We stayed in with an open window and they sat in the garden and chatted with us.

DinosApple · 21/03/2020 16:10

That's a great idea!

Maybe we will be able to visit MIL next weekend. She's in a care home on the ground floor. She's 90 and we usually visit weekly (SI atm).

FuckPolitenessSSDGM · 21/03/2020 16:22

Made me smile Smile

Imohsotired · 21/03/2020 16:25

I do this when I drop off supplies to older family. It's so lovely to see them even from across the garden.

I had to take my toddler yesterday when going to my parents and it was a big mistake. They screamed the entire car ride home about wanting to stay at their grandparents. It broke my heart and lesson learned to stick to video calling.
