With playground equipment etc. They are 2 & 4 and getting them to go on "walks" is pretty hard but I worry about them not getting exercise.

@Yesmate , this is from the self-isolation advice on the government's website:

"You can use your garden, if you have one. You can also leave the house to exercise – but stay at least 2 metres away from other people."

So @Winifredgoose is following government advice.

There seems to be a lot of people on mumsnet venting their frustration at others with very little provocation. We all know it's a dire situation. Your attitude isn't helping.

Straycatstrut · 21/03/2020 08:34

We're not SI so going on a dog walk up the moors to play in streams and puddles etc. Away from others. I wouldn't use playgrounds.

SI families must be going mad. My mental health is fragile at the best of times.

Take care all

Swiftier · 21/03/2020 08:37

I’d avoid the playgrounds, like others have said. I live next to a big London park and the playgrounds have been so busy the last couple of days, I think they’ll need to close. We need to avoid spreading the virus, so avoiding touching things others also touch and getting too close to others. Going to the park and staying a couple of metres from others is the most responsible option right now.

Aragog · 21/03/2020 08:38

Yesmate - self isolation still means you can go out but without being near people. I've been in two walks - no symptoms but last weekend dd has a cough. Two walks this week where we didn't touch anything and we didn't get within at least 2 meters from anyone. Infact for much of the walk we didn't see anyone at all apart from one man the other side of the stream.
We've also had contact free delivery and collection.

All allowed under the government advice.

LittleBearPad · 21/03/2020 08:41

Please don’t go to the playground. There’s a park - get them to run round that.

Yesmate · 21/03/2020 08:42

@MaggieAndHopey if I thought for one minute that 2 metres apart on the walks playing what’s the time mr wolf and feeding the ducks was happening then great. The point of what’s the time mr wolf is to catch people. My attitude will change when people stop being so fucking ignorant and selfish. Yes I will vent my frustration, I would say watching people die and people have operations cancelled because of the strain in the NHS is provocation enough.
Play in your garden, isolation isn’t for ever it’s less time that social distancing. Selfishness breeds selfishness. So many people that think the rules don’t apply to them. If you can’t stay at home for the recommended time when one of you have or has had symptoms then you are an arsehole.

LeniSpring · 21/03/2020 08:43

I live in a bedsit with a 4 year old. No balcony. No garden. Of course I'm still going to take her to the park, it will just have to be fields and woods rather than an actual play park. There's a really good one that takes about 20 mins to walk to, loads of open space. It's all well and good saying "stay in" when you have a proper flat or house. Try living in less than 20 Square metres with a kid.

Yesmate · 21/03/2020 08:44

You can’t guarantee that no one will get within two metres of you though. A jogger comes up behind and brushes past you. Possible infection. It’s two weeks just stay in.

MaggieAndHopey · 21/03/2020 08:46

@Yesmate - they're playing 'What's the Time, Mr Wolf' with each other! Away from other people, as Winifred said.

You don't have to observe the 2 metre rule with the people you live with. Read the rules, and make sure you understand them yourself before you start shouting at other people. Also, not everyone (in fact the vast majority of people) are lucky enough to have a garden. Good for you if you do.

Isthistrueor · 21/03/2020 08:47

@yesmate If you listened to Dr Jenny Harries yesterday she actually stated that she fully recommends exercise and fresh air, that includes visits to the park and cycle rides. Local nature reserves are good to go too and I know National Trust are keeping their grounds open to the public despite cafes and houses being closed.

Fresh air and exercise is GOOD, do not stay indoors for the next few months- you will get sick.

Isthistrueor · 21/03/2020 08:49

Self isolation is NOT the same as social distancing, perhaps the government needs to be clearer on this. You only need to self isolate for 14 days (so don’t leave the house AT ALL) if you have symptoms. If you do not have symptoms social distancing is recommended. Social distancing does not mean you can’t leave the house, please don’t do this! You need vitamin D, you will get sick if you stay indoors for months.

Social distancing literally means avoiding unnecessary social contact so don’t visit all of the places the PM closed yesterday. You CAN visit a park, I wouldn’t recommend a playground but a park is fine.

Yesmate · 21/03/2020 08:50

I don’t plan on staying inside for the next few months but if I had symptoms then yes I would for the amount of time needed.
The what’s the time thing was silly, I realised when I had written it.
I’m not shouting. I am frustrated at the blasé attitude if so many people though. Maybe not the people on here and maybe my frustration is misdirected so I apologise.
I have had some incredibly bad news this morning as a direct result of the virus.
I apologise for acting like a bit of a cunt.

MaggieAndHopey · 21/03/2020 08:51

@Yesmate it's OK, we're all feeling it. x

Astridd · 21/03/2020 08:53

Our local playgrounds have been chained up so you might not be able to go even if you want to.

Useryokyesno · 21/03/2020 08:58

@BuffaloCauliflower 9 days? Where did you read that?

hammeringinmyhead · 21/03/2020 08:59

It's not entirely true that NT properties are open. My 3 nearest are closed fully including the grounds, despite 2 of those being gardens only!

user1495884620 · 21/03/2020 08:59

Lots of exercise/dance videos on youtube that you can use to get them moving at home. Things like the Wiggles. Set a time eg before lunch every day if you want a bit more routine to your day.

ShadyAcromat · 21/03/2020 08:59

Our council has shut all the playgrounds. The parks are open but the play equipment locked up.

Kahlua4me · 21/03/2020 09:00

I think the point that yesmate is making is that if anyone who has any of the symptoms simply stays home for 2 weeks, without going out at all then there is no chance that they can pass it on to other people.

When you go through the NHS checklist at the end if you have the symptoms it actually tells you to stay home completely for 7 days.

Yes, it will be tough but it needs to be done if we are going to control the virus and stop the NHS from crumbling under the pressure.

Mummyeyes · 21/03/2020 09:03

We urgently need testing of outdoor surfaces versus indoor. UV light, rain and wind will shorten the half life of the virus. Until then stay on playing fields. Kick a ball with the kids far apart. Skip with a rope - each kid have their own rope. (Absolutely fantastic cardiovascular and coordination). The kids must get out and get daylight and fresh air.

LIZS · 21/03/2020 09:04

We had a very confusing email form NT suggesting only open spaces were accessible , so not necessarily house grounds or parklands. Website was no help. Confused

YappityYapYap · 21/03/2020 09:07

I bought a trampoline for my DS. Just pre warning everyone that it took me 4 hours to build and my back is in agony today but well worth it to keep my DS entertained. I got it from argos for £85. Chad valley 6ft trampoline with an enclosure

Changedmyname84 · 21/03/2020 09:08

So glad we bought the trampoline last year!! So many naysayers it’s been amazing! So glad the weather is improving too!

BuffaloCauliflower · 21/03/2020 09:09

@Useryokyesno I’ve seen it repeatedly, couldn’t say one source

BuffaloCauliflower · 21/03/2020 09:11

@Useryokyesno sorry that should have been 3 days (72 hours) on steel, 2 days on cardboard - typo
