This is a difficult time in the UK. Access to healthcare is not guaranteed and access to basics like food are getting harder (hopefully this will ease up).

In some countries, food insecurity and lack of access to healthcare is just the norm for most people. They don't deserve it either.

AIBU to think we should work towards global equality so nobody has to feel like this?

severalboxes · 20/03/2020 08:27

When I say don't deserve it, obviously I mean they have done nothing to make it fair that they should live that way rather than that they don't deserve food and healthcare!

Hopefully it will be an eye opener to everyone. My elderly father has always had issues with refugees/immigration and suddenly agreed if there was anywhere he could go to escape this, he would do the same. Maybe this will be one of the "positives" that come out of all this

Bezalelle · 20/03/2020 08:31

We need to get our own house in order first by kicking the Tories out and raising a strong socialist government.

onalongsabbatical · 20/03/2020 08:32

Good perspective OP.
I keep thinking of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe too.

Most of us are still very lucky, and luckier than millions and millions of others.

JasonBrun · 20/03/2020 08:35

There's nothing socialist about ignoring the plight of other countries @Bezalelle Where's your international solidarity.

Etinox · 20/03/2020 08:40

Really bleakly it’s the low standard of living, shorter life expectancy etc. which is protecting Africa and India. CV is having less of an impact because the elderly are already dead. Sad
But that’s mischievous. Yes, let’s hope we’re all kinder and aware of isolation and inequalities of access to healthcare around the world.

TabbyMumz · 20/03/2020 08:55

It's not just people in other Countries. We have thousands of people here who are too ill to go out and virtually live their lives looking out of the window.

TabbyMumz · 20/03/2020 08:57

Plus those that can go out, to meetings, clubs etc, to help with recovery are all now isolated as the clubs are shut. A lot of people need physio / pilates etc to recover and that will all stop too.

lowlandLucky · 20/03/2020 09:06

Whilst i have every sympathy for anyone going without food, water, shelter and healthcare we need to get our home country in order first, after this is over we will need every £ we have to get our country on an even keel again

Reginabambina · 20/03/2020 09:10

@Bezalelle OMFG. The countries where people are living like often have ‘strong socialist governments’. How stupid can people get?!

BovaryX · 20/03/2020 09:11

Can you explain how to work towards global equality? How will this be achieved? What specific things do you envisage the UK and its citizens doing?

EvilPea · 20/03/2020 09:18

I think what’s clear is that our actions really do impact the entire world now.
We really need to think globally about everything we do now.
With planes and the Internet, we are closer than ever, we influence everyone and they influence us.
Global warming causing challenges and migration. Food shortages, even fake news.
We are more linked then ever and we need to work together closer. Vaccines, food standards and basic healthcare. It would protect us all.

pickledchocolate · 20/03/2020 09:21

Agreed. It's also the case for people in this country - I was out of work recently and apart from my child and shop staff I didn't speak to anybody for about 3 months.

slipperywhensparticus · 20/03/2020 09:21

Seriously let's get over this pandemic before we start poking our noses into other countrys and telling them how to live or virtue signalling with just £2 a month

BovaryX · 20/03/2020 09:23

I think what’s clear is that our actions really do impact the entire world now

Well, a cross species virus which originated in Wuhan China has now become a global pandemic. But I am asking the OP, what specific actions by the UK and its citizens are required to achieve 'global equality?' You mention 'basic healthcare' For every country on the planet? How do you intend to achieve this?

EmeraldShamrock · 20/03/2020 09:31

We will all learn from this be more aware, I think the problems go much deeper in certain countries with corrupted governments.
What I find fascinating is how Venice water is now clear, nature is blossoming with all the humans locked away.

severalboxes · 20/03/2020 09:34

Hey, this question obviously made some people defensive. I think it's good to notice how awful this instability is, want to get back to normal, but also remember that in some countries this is the status quo.

It's ridiculous to challenge me to come up with a global plan for equality, this is a mumsnet thread. There are plenty of people out there with plans, look them up.

Typically it means having a less exploitative relationship with developing countries and less corruption within our own country.

OP posts:
LikeTheOceansWeRise · 20/03/2020 09:36

Totally agree OP. Everyone is desperate to 'get back to normal' but this state of uncertainty and fear is what millions across the world have to live with everyday. I'm very nervous about what's to come but also very aware of how lucky I am to have a home to social distance in, a stable job, good health etc.

Also the OP isn't suggesting that the UK needs to fix global problems. She's just suggesting a little empathy and change of perspective. No need to inject negativity into everything.

Marieo · 20/03/2020 09:41

Hopefully. Ebola is still present in the ROC, thankfully it is harder to spread than Corona, but it is much more savage. Most who catch it there it is a death sentence, even though treatments are available. It's really sad, and hopefully we can do more to help now people might empathise even a fraction.

BovaryX · 20/03/2020 09:43

I think work towards global equality is a meaningless statement. You are the one talking about global equality. Yet you can't offer any suggestions as to how it can be achieved. Maybe that is because it's unachievable. It's just a hollow slogan.

Safiyah2020 · 20/03/2020 09:43

This thread shows exactly the insensitive, selfish twats that live in England on a whole.

Great! Blanket denunciation of an entire country! How very progressive....

severalboxes · 20/03/2020 09:57

OK BovaryX, next time I start to feel empathy I'll shut it down unless I have a full system for global change up my sleeve, and a team ready to implement it.

Look up the UN development goals or something and stop trying to wind me up, please. Not taking the bait.

BovaryX · 20/03/2020 10:01

Er, asking you how your goal of global equality will be achieved is 'winding you up?' Do you just make meaningless, hollow statements and expect people to clap rather than question? How very bizarre.

Safiyah2020 · 20/03/2020 10:20

It's ok @severalboxes ignore the ignorant.

I think it's very noble to wonder these things with the current issues we are all suffering with. It does give you more compassion to those less fortunate. I keep thinking of those in war torn countries like Syria and think how awful it must of been for the people. Its called being an empathetic person.
