To be worried about a sore throat?

Cocoandclive27 · 19/03/2020 18:06

Not coronvirus I'm pretty sure of that. But I've had a persistent sore throat which radiates to my ear for the past two weeks now. It's only on the right side, feels very localised like it's caused by an ulcer or lesion. When I look in the mirror it does actually look like there's some sort of whitish bump on the right tonsil. Should I be worried?

I know nobody can diagnose me here but trying to see a doctor is near impossible right now. Hoping it's something viral that will settle down on its own. Paracetamol seem to help but I've been taking them for nearly two weeks now!

I've had this before. A couple of times, actually. Try the old home remedies ... gargling with salt water etc. I never go to the doctors due to living abroad and my local language not being upto it but i've solved this with salt and water/drinking hot water, honey and lemon/paracetamol (NOT ibuproden or any anti-infammatories, incase you've not read the news about them potentially making coronavirus worse... I'm not in the UK at the moment so not sure what's being reported). I used this sort of thing for mine and it eventually went away.

Teacup34 · 19/03/2020 18:29

It could be tonsillitis not sure if that would radiate to your ear though, maybe you have an ear infection also? Do you have any pain under your jaw or a hard bump. That's what I get when I have tonsillitis.

KittyJune · 19/03/2020 18:29

I mean you should probably self-isolate just incase

fairgame84 · 19/03/2020 18:30

It could be a tonsil stone. They can cause pain to radiate to the ear. See if you can nudge it out.

Cocoandclive27 · 19/03/2020 18:32

Tonsil stone sounds scary!! It's literally all just on that one side of my face, in the tonsil not the back of the throat.

No pain in the jaw just tonsil and earache.

Our GP surgery lets patients use that Livi app to see a doctor over FaceTime, is that a possibility as a first step?

Salt water gargling is good too or I use dilute clorhexidine mouthwash at night sometimes

Love2cycle · 19/03/2020 18:36

I normally get a sore throat if I've very stressed or sleep deprived.

fairgame84 · 19/03/2020 18:36

A tonsil stone is nothing to worry out. Just nudge it out with a cotton bud or toothbrush.

Mittens030869 · 19/03/2020 18:43

If you haven't had a high temperature or a persistent cough, then it probably isn't CV. I've found that sore throats are best treated with Lemsips, Strepsil throat sweets and lemon drinks. And gargling with salt or TCP.

The only thing to watch for is that you might need antibiotics. Our GP surgery does telephone appointments, so that might be the way to go with this.

OlaEliza · 19/03/2020 18:52

Fuck using a cotton bud or toothbrush. Use tweezers. There are videos on YouTube. So 🤮 you have to keep watching.

ahran2k · 19/03/2020 19:10

Following with interest as I have the exact same thing but on left side. For me it started in January and I thought it was viral and got better on it own. Went to GP last Thursday and was prescribed penicillin for 10 days. Haven't made any difference but the GP said it will take time and in worst case it might need to be drained (don't think that will happen anytime soon). My low grade fever has gone so that's positive but my mouth has a bitter taste which comes and goes.

Namechange4nowt45 · 19/03/2020 19:15

Daft question but have you had your teeth checked out? I had persistent pain in that area as well as monthly ear infections on the painful side, my dad who is a health professional mention my teeth I thought he was nuts but I'd had enough of the pain so got my teeth checked and I need toot canal filling done and was getting infected without realising it I just thought sore throat and ear infections it's a coincidence

Cocoandclive27 · 19/03/2020 19:19

I had a dental abscess which was treated with antibiotics and the sore throat sort of cropped up after. I thought it might be related but the abscess is fine now and the sore throat remains. Pretty sure it's caused by whatever this weird white growth thing is. It's almost translucent. The thought of picking at it with tweezers makes me want to heave Envy

Can you post a photo of it?

ShinyMe · 19/03/2020 19:45

That sounds like tonsilitis to me. I get that regularly, always on one side. Sometimes my throat feels fine but I get terrible ear pain - I went do the doctor once for horrific ear pain, which the doctor said was actually the tonsils swelling inwards towards the ear canal rather that outwards to the throat. Apparently it happens sometimes as you get older, yay!

Mittens030869 · 19/03/2020 20:30

I think tonsillitis usually includes a high temperature, though. But I had inflamed tonsils back in October, and that was viral, no temperature. I couldn't eat anything for a week, during a family holiday.

I found that the best way to deal with that was to take paracetamol half an hour before eating.

Whatever it is, I think you should ask for a telephone appointment.

You have to video, and post, it!

Cocoandclive27 · 19/03/2020 20:37

Can't take a good picture in this light but it's not obvious anyway tbh. If anything it looks like a small blister or bubble. Hurts when I swallow. I've recently been on antibiotics for something else but you'd think if it were bacterial they would have cleared it up.

Since I can't see my doctor (telephone consultations only) I might ask my dentist when I have my routine check up next week. Although that could get cancelled to at this rate

Greydove28 · 19/03/2020 21:13

I had this and it was a tooth abscess

Cocoandclive27 · 19/03/2020 21:17

@Greydove28 on the actual tonsil?

OP posts:
Cocoandclive27 · 20/03/2020 07:15

I have managed to bring my routine dentist appointment forward which is good. If I can't see a doctor at the minute I guess this is the next best thing!

OP posts:
Beesisabuzzin · 20/03/2020 07:51

Just Google tonsil stone. My daughter gets them. Very easy to dislodge with a cotton bud. Why go to the dentist if you don't need to?

Cocoandclive27 · 20/03/2020 08:13

@Beesisabuzzin I had a routine check up booked anyway and appointments are still going ahead at my dentist so I though I might as well go sooner rather than later and get it looked at. No chance of getting to see a doctor and as I've been in pain for a few weeks now I think it needs looking at.

It doesn't look or sound like a tonsil stone I've already looked online.
