to think carers are keyworkers

watching the news and stuff and no mention of carers.
without them care homes will be in trouble. vulnerable people will be left to fend for themselves.

No YANBU they are definitely key workers, I will be surprised if they aren't included. I'm sure they will be included in the list of key workers thay will be published by the govt soon

Samcro · 19/03/2020 07:52

i hope so. my dd is in a care home, so I suppose i am over invested.

I think the list of key workers will be long. Im definately a key worker as am health care front line, however i would also assume that all our support staff e.g. housekeeping, admin, cooks etc would be on it

Theres lots of essential services like social care, food production and fuel delivery etc that would also have to be encompassed surely?

Cockola · 19/03/2020 08:27

If you include too many people the whole point of closing schools becomes moot.

FishingPaws · 19/03/2020 08:48

@Marlox - you'd think so, but there was an acute physio posting yesterday (I think) who at the time wasn't being considered a key worker (at least by her dc's school). Hopefully that's been fixed, but I suspect some people (the ones 'in charge' mainly) have nothing like a comprehensive understanding of who the key workers actually are.

ludothedog · 19/03/2020 08:56

List of key workers will be huge. Prison officers, the courts (people appearing from custody), social care, social workers, anyone involved in the food supply chain, petrol stations, chemists, there are loads!

Forfoxsake29 · 19/03/2020 08:58

I would have thought my husband would be a key worker, He’s a train signaller. And I’m a social care worker.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 19/03/2020 09:00

My BIL is a carer and being classed as a key worker. They are having to change the way they work. Instead of having shifts, they will have particular service users.

If Bob is seen at 6am, 12pm, 4pm and 9pm then the same carer will see him.

halcyondays · 19/03/2020 09:02

Definitely, they’re essential workers and very undervalued.
I’d expect someone at the government to have a comprehensive list of key workers or are they just making it up as they go along?

Splitsunrise · 19/03/2020 09:05

Absolutely

Mrsjayy · 19/03/2020 09:07

Yes I think they just used keyworkers as an umberella term, but of course carers are essential workers, My Sister works in a group home she was saying new procedures are in place.

Pinkdelight3 · 19/03/2020 09:33

Our school includes care workers in the list of those whose kids can still come to school from next week. It's the usual key workers (NHS etc) plus care workers and supermarket delivery drivers, which seems wise.

Samcro · 19/03/2020 09:41

glad to hear that. with our care workers the most vulnerable will suffer. most care homes are now in lockdown as well(no seeing dd, so im sad)

I think it’s proving to be very interesting regarding which jobs are considered essential and how that differs to pay.

I’m sure carers will be on that list.

Mrsjayy · 19/03/2020 09:45

Aww no that is such a shame you must be in some weird limbo Flowers

Samcro · 19/03/2020 09:46

@Mrsjayy i was lucky that i was visiting her just as the manager got told. but yes not seeing her for weeks is going to be very hard, but her safety is my priority.

frasersmummy · 19/03/2020 09:47

I get it i totally do but I'm wondering how work a book it is
If you sit down and think about how many. People we rely on in our communities
The number of kids this will cover will be phenomenal.. So why close the schools??

I'm sorry if I'm missing something obvious

housepicturesqueclub · 19/03/2020 09:49

Pretty sure the gov website statement mentioned carers, have a look.

SinkGirl · 19/03/2020 09:50

The whole policy is a bit of a nightmare.

Apparently schools should make provisions for children with EHCPs but many specialist schools have already closed because they don’t have the staff to deliver what’s legally needed due to the EHCPs, and many can’t just go to another school.

BadCatDirtyCat · 19/03/2020 09:50

I think there will be a lot of "key workers" - carers as you say, people who work in shops and logistics, of course the emergency services - but also the cleaners, building managers, tech support etc that keep the hospitals and police stations running.

Inforthelonghaul · 19/03/2020 09:54

They definitely are essential. I was thinking yesterday that most of us have no real idea of the sheer scale of workers needed to keep life ticking over for the rest of us who are lucky enough to be able to self isolate.

user1471590586 · 19/03/2020 09:57

It will be utility workers too. Electricity, water, gas, phone and Internet. Bin men are vital too.

sunshinestanley · 19/03/2020 09:58

Yes, definitely carers, supermarket staff, cleaners, delivery drivers, teachers, postal workers, utilities staff, Internet providers, medical supplies manufacturers, big pharma research and production etc, mechanics, petrol pump attendants. It seems like an inexhaustible list!

However, just in my social circle we have lots who fortunately are able to WFH - accountants, IT consultants, solicitors, admin staff.

Mrsfrumble · 19/03/2020 10:05

Yes, I was thinking about refuse collectors too. Definitely essential!

I suppose it could be narrowed down by considering key workers who have non-key worker partners who can work from home and care for children? I’m guessing some families in that position would choose to keep their children at home anyway in order the reduce the risk for the key worker themselves.

VegetableMunge · 19/03/2020 10:15

Very much so!
