My daughters cut is infected - what do I do?

Counciltennantontheedge · 18/03/2020 23:29

Last night daughter and son ran into eachother, daughter bit her cheek badly- very deep.
Today she has had a fever and her face has ballooned and is red and hot to the touch.
Ahe hasn't eaten except an icelolly and a sandwich. She didn't touch her dinner and either slept or cried most of the day.

She is five and I did the 111 online questionaire and it ended with ring 999 for an ambulance. She is asleep now and I don't want to disturb her and i certainly don't want to waste anyones time.
I was expecting the nhs website to give me tips on painrelief not ring an ambulance. I have heard 111 are a little trigger happy with sending ambulances. Infact every time I have called for minor reasons I have been told to go to hospital or they have called an ambulance and i have worried myself into a frenzy until the doctor sees us and asks why we came Blush

I wasn't even too worried until my sister said it looked infected (i assumed the fever was a seperate issue and the face was swollen because the cut was so deep)

I could ring the gps surgery tomorrow but I am a little worried. What would you do mumsnet?

Go to A&E - sorry as I know it's a pain. Problem is infection can become sepsis. But I am not a qualified HCP so hopefully someone who is can offer some advice.

HarrietThePi · 18/03/2020 23:33

That's tough. The cut is inside her mouth I assume, are you sure the swelling is related to it or could it be from where she bashed into your ds? If she seems ok I would probably leave her sleeping and ring the doctors in the morning. If she gets worse then I guess take her to hospital - have you got any other way to get there besides ambulance if you have to go?

defineme · 18/03/2020 23:34

I would take her to GP / Walk in asap or at this time of night ring 111 it sounds serious

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 18/03/2020 23:37

Bites often require antibiotics. You need to get her checked ASAP.

Embracelife · 18/03/2020 23:37

Take her to a and e !! Why have you not?
Her face has " ballooned and red" and she has fever
If it was 24 hours ago and has got worse not better clearly she needs to be seen now.
Why would you risk infection sepsis in a 5 year old?
A and e have never criticised bringng child in
Better to be embarrassed than risk severe infection
Take to a and e now or as soon as she wakes.

Embracelife · 18/03/2020 23:40

If her face is ballooned and red as you say no one is going to ask why she there. It will be obvious... get her seen a s a p.

BitchHazel · 18/03/2020 23:40

Infection inside the mouth can escalate quite quickly. I would give her some paracetamol to bring her temp down and help with the pain and get her to rinse her mouth out with salty, cooled boiled water every hour. Ice lollies or ice cubes will help with the swelling and pain too.

In the current climate I'd avoid going straight to hospital but phone 111 for more advice.

Counciltennantontheedge · 18/03/2020 23:41

I am pregnant and have a baby too
Well toddler so im really worried about going to a walk in center / a&e at the moment

No car or money in the house (dh has my card and he works nights)
I do have a 24 hr busservice (thank god) walkomg distance but we are all Self isolating because little one had a temperature too yday and today so i don't want to risk anyone else either.

Yes i hadn't thought of sepsis
Ill keep an eye
Tryong to stay awake on mumsnet to hear her breathing

@BitchHazel thats what im worried about and why im hesitant. Calling 111 now
I really dont know
It didnt connect- i was worrying about cv like an idiot . Completely didnt even connect the fever to the swelling

Get your husband to take her when he gets in from work then .
Even in current climate they will see a 5 yr old with a red swollen face and poss infection needing antibiotics etc

BitchHazel · 18/03/2020 23:46

Also make sure you can rouse her easily. You don't need to fully wake her up but give her a gentle shake and make sure she's responsive.

Embracelife · 18/03/2020 23:47

(And keep some emergency money at home plus dont give your bank card to your dh)

Counciltennantontheedge · 18/03/2020 23:52

He had it in his pocket earlier
Ive just checked her temp again (she had calpol about am hour and a half ago) amd her forehead feels cool but her face is still hot

OP posts:
Counciltennantontheedge · 18/03/2020 23:53

Hot where the cut is

SallySun123 · 18/03/2020 23:55

A+E definitely.

BitchHazel · 18/03/2020 23:57

Can you take her temperature with a thermometer or just by touch?

Is her cheek red? Has the redness spread noticably since it happened?

Mittens030869 · 18/03/2020 23:58

I would take her to A&E, definitely.

Aquamarine1029 · 18/03/2020 23:59

She needs to get to hospital NOW.

PotholeParadise · 19/03/2020 00:00

Call 111, tell them what you've said here and explain about the other child with a fever.

Sparklfairy · 19/03/2020 00:01

Bites can get serious really quickly due to bacteria on the teeth. Look up 'fight bite' on google images if you're brave. They can get nasty very very quickly. I really would take her to A&E now.

PotholeParadise · 19/03/2020 00:04

Hang on, is the only feverish person your daughter, where the cut is?

Pixxie7 · 19/03/2020 00:30

If you get no joy from go have you thought of taking her to a pharmacists ?

Kwkwjwkek · 19/03/2020 00:33

Needs to go to a&e!!

Counciltennantontheedge · 19/03/2020 00:52

They said due to temp that we cant go to a and e or walk in
Not really sure what to do still

Also we have to ring 111 again but even said 'not sure why'! I think everyone is so worried about coronavirus they forgot about the real reason for the call
Not sure we will get anywhere. I think I will get my DP to go to the chemist tomorrow with some photos of her face and see what they can do.

PotholeParadise · 19/03/2020 00:57

When you ring again, ask if it is possible for someone to prescribe antibiotics over the phone.
