My daughters cut is infected - what do I do?

Last night daughter and son ran into eachother, daughter bit her cheek badly- very deep.
Today she has had a fever and her face has ballooned and is red and hot to the touch.
Ahe hasn't eaten except an icelolly and a sandwich. She didn't touch her dinner and either slept or cried most of the day.

She is five and I did the 111 online questionaire and it ended with ring 999 for an ambulance. She is asleep now and I don't want to disturb her and i certainly don't want to waste anyones time.
I was expecting the nhs website to give me tips on painrelief not ring an ambulance. I have heard 111 are a little trigger happy with sending ambulances. Infact every time I have called for minor reasons I have been told to go to hospital or they have called an ambulance and i have worried myself into a frenzy until the doctor sees us and asks why we came Blush

I wasn't even too worried until my sister said it looked infected (i assumed the fever was a seperate issue and the face was swollen because the cut was so deep)

I could ring the gps surgery tomorrow but I am a little worried. What would you do mumsnet?

We were very lucky with ds and caught it early. My husband is a private tutor and the mum of one of his pupils was there when I was wondering whether to take ds to the walk in centre or not. She took one look at him, told me she was cancelling her son's lesson and we must take him to be seen straight away.

Have to wait until tomorrow 3pm to pick up the antibiotics.
Her temp has gone down and she has eaten and played today- still hot to the touch and swollen though

It was a nightmare but insisted they saw past the temperature and finally got an email to the doctor who we couldn't get in touch with until afternoon anyway.

Thanks for the advice. No idea about sepsis or anything and i wanted an idea of what it was before coronavirus was shouted about.

My youngest has had a temp aswell so thats why we were self isolating. Dp went to fetch the ABs but they said we have to wait until tomorrow

Thankfully she seems much better anyway although dp had a job and half finding some more calpol for her. Poor thing is being brave though. Everything seems to be moving very slow compared to before.

Do keep an eye on her. DS2 had antibiotics from the doctor the day after his injury but I took him back the next day as he looked far far worse and we were sent to A&E.

Hope she is fine though!

It looks white inside the cut but she is acting better. I do hope it goes down soon
Keep swilling with boiled salt water

@Potionqueen

That’s interesting? (not goady)- I’ve read literature that notes subcutaneous injections are a risk for cellulitis in geriatric patients in care settings- presumably also visibly clean. What’s the thinking behind not cleaning? Work of a second - is it the cost of wipes V cost of antibiotics for rare cases of contamination?

Potionqueen · 20/03/2020 19:21

Care homes are notorious for harbouring germs. Therefore they would swab. However you need to do it for at least 30 secs, then wait for the skin to dry before giving the injections.

Alcohol swabs should not be used for live vaccines. In a clinic environment we did not swab.

Ah thanks!

Find the ins and outs of clinical practice super interesting - thanks for explaining Smile
