To feel bad for those not able to take thier exams.

I hated school, but I can’t help feel bad for year 11’s and those taking a levels that won’t be able to take them. I know the kind of pressure they put on kids nowadays, even more that I had 16 years ago. I can’t imagine doing all that work and you don’t even get to take them. I’ve heard they will use predicted grades as thier actual grades, I don’t know how true it is. My sister has been writing out revision cards for like 6 months and now it’s all been for nothing. I know there’s nothing you can do, I just feel bad.

Scotland has made no announcement- the SQA are still to clarify. My DS is S4 and ready now, not in 3/4 months time. He' got all As in prelims but a few not band 1s and he's been getting band 1s recently. It's just not fair.

I have a Year 11 and a Year 13 and told them tonight that even if they don't think the next couple of days mean much to them, to at least make an effort because if the teachers are deciding what grades to give them, they will think better of those who worked right up to the end.

I think we should trust the teachers and I know at my son's school that those children who have made improvements since the first mock exams will see a recognition of this improvement.
I do think Boris Johnson should have clarified how every student will get their qualifications at the same time as announcing that exams were cancelled.
Sure there's bigger things to worry about but for these children this has been their major focus for the best part of 2/3 years and even if he clarifies tomorrow (big if) 24 hours of anguish is too much to ask of 15/16/17 year olds

My sister is in Year 11 and she’s heartbroken. She’s put two years of work into it this and now can’t sit the exams. To make it worse, her school shut on Monday due to staff shortages so the Year 11s had their last day without even realising it so it’s now impossible to salvage any of the ‘normal’ leaving stuff and say goodbye to everyone

Surely teachers will make an assessment for each pupil based on their work until the closures on Friday. That would take into account any improvement since their mocks. They must keep progress records for each pupil.

My sons (yr 11) is going to be a mess when I pick him up from school later - he took his shirt in to be signed etc today but half the kids are off now 😞 no exams, no leavers do, no prom and no proper goodbye.

I received his end of term report today though and they'd adjusted his predicted grades following his disastrous mocks. I think that's what they'll use for his grades.

ultrablue · 19/03/2020 13:49

Yr11 and yr13. Ye 13 had a difficult time adjusting to a new 6th etc, so his grades weren't the best in one subject, but worked hard to improve. Luckily he managed to get an unconditional offer at his first choice uni.

Yr11 DD, her predicted grades are awful but she has really pulled her socks up the last year or so and consistently gets the higher marks in her class. She's gutted that she won't get the chance to prove herself, plus say goodbye to friends, prom dress etc
At least she has a busy last two days at school as the teachers are frantically rearranging lessons and mock exams etc to give them the best support that they can.

My daughter, in Year 13, is very upset. Says she feels aimless. However, I understand that her college is expecting students to complete the set curriculum if a grade is to be awarded. So remote teaching will still be happening.

schafernaker · 19/03/2020 14:16

Teacher who has just been asked to input predicted grades for a 3-5 borderline group in a core subject. It’s breaking my heart that I could potentially be playing god with these kids futures. Some have worked so hard al year, some have only just got the memo and May have shown drastic improvement in the next few weeks, we will never know and I can only go off what I’ve seen😢

noblegiraffe · 19/03/2020 15:53

Me too, schafernaker.

The responsibility of deciding who passes and who fails (and resits) isn’t ultimately ours, though. There’ll be some jiggerypokery done on them further down the line and what we write isn’t necessarily what they’ll get.

Maladicta · 19/03/2020 22:19

My two are at different grammars.

Ds1 had a cobbled together special assembly today in lieu of their Y13 leavers dinner, they shared stories with the teachers and talked through their worries about what lies ahead. Tomorrow, timetable's cancelled, they can come to school in mufti or fancy dress and have the Sixth Form centre to chat and chill. He's sad but has some sense of closure.

Ds2, we only found out at 5pm that the school is completely closed to them tomorrow. KS3 are in because it would be too difficult to arrange childcare (even though DS1's school has closed to all but keyworker/vulnerable KS3 children since Wednesday) and they think Y10 and Y12 need the extra teaching time.

They can't collect stuff from lockers until Monday when school buses won't be running and opening hours aren't yet confirmed, they can't finish coursework that's held in school as there won't be anyone to supervise them.

DS was debating whether or not to move to another school, this has made the decision so much easier. How can you do this to children Sad

Leflic · 19/03/2020 22:30

DS was overjoyed about schools closing early. Until he realised that was in two days his time at school was over.
His English teacher cried in front of them.
I asked DS if they were shirt signing but he said no because the Prom would be a reunion. Optimism of youth..

aupresdemonarbre · 19/03/2020 22:36

Completely agree. They should have the option to retake the year and sit exams.
