To feel bad for those not able to take thier exams.

I hated school, but I can’t help feel bad for year 11’s and those taking a levels that won’t be able to take them. I know the kind of pressure they put on kids nowadays, even more that I had 16 years ago. I can’t imagine doing all that work and you don’t even get to take them. I’ve heard they will use predicted grades as thier actual grades, I don’t know how true it is. My sister has been writing out revision cards for like 6 months and now it’s all been for nothing. I know there’s nothing you can do, I just feel bad.

are they planning on keeping schools closed until after June then? Exams normally take place in May and June schools could be back open by then maybe.

Chocolatecake12 · 18/03/2020 22:29

I think they’ve cancelled exams without having a longer term plan. Now they will have to decide what’s best. And we have to go along with it. My ds is yr 13 so it could have a big impact on his future choices but I’m trying to stay calm and see what happens in the next week or so when a plan comes together. I’m hoping their teachers tomorrow will calm them down and support them.

Hoghgyni · 18/03/2020 22:31

Exams are cancelled not postponed. This week DD has lost her job, had all matches and coaching stopped for the sport which takes up all her free time, lost the structure of her 6th form day and faces the uncertainty of what will happen to the offer she holds from Oxford. Add on the likely cancellation of the interrailing holiday she has been saving for & she is absolutely overwhelmed.

Lonecatwithkitten · 18/03/2020 22:34

My year 11 DD is devastated because she has worked so hard over the last 2 years and because she scared that the future outside traditional education that she worked so hard to gain a place in is at risk.
I particularly feel sorry for year 11 as they had the goal posts moved on the for Year 6 SATS with only slightly over a year to go and now GCSEs.

Icanttakethiscrapanymore · 18/03/2020 22:35

My year 13 dd has worked her arse off this year to better her predicted grades. She’s devastated & feels it’s all been for nothing. I’m just trying to reassure her that it will be sorted but tbh I’m worried for her Sad

noblegiraffe · 18/03/2020 22:35

I’ve got to teach Y11 tomorrow and Friday. I have no idea what to say to them. They will be begging me to raise predicted grades and I don’t even know how or whether they’ll be used.

What do I teach them? How do I console them? Their exams and their school leaving celebrations have been sacrificed for the greater good, but it’s too early to see that.

And I don’t even know how they will get their qualifications, or their college places. I hope more info comes soon,

Social distancing and possible lock down will be tough, but at least the other children have school work to give structure and purpose to their days. I am worried about their mental health.

Jimmers · 18/03/2020 22:40

I feel so much for the teachers & pupils. My Yr13 son’s school has been keeping them as informed as they can. Predicted grades will incorporate course work & improvements made since mocks apparently. The rite of passage aspect of leaving juniors/seniors/sixth form is lost though, and that’s incredibly sad

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 18/03/2020 22:44

My daughter's school has arranged a meeting for year 13 with senior staff first thing tomorrow morning and hopefully they will be able to reassure the students. I'm not really worried about her being disadvantaged as all year 13's will be in the same boat but she is concerned that they might go on the AS results which did not reflect her ability or her predicted grades.

Maladicta · 18/03/2020 22:49

I’ve one of each and both are trying their best to stay calm. Younger one needs good grades to move for sixth form, older one is still waiting for an offer from his preferred uni but now feels he has no chance Sad

Pixxie7 · 18/03/2020 22:58

Exams are a stepping stone to the next stage in their lives, they will survive this and life will go on we hope.

Oblomov20 · 18/03/2020 23:02

I am sad. It's a big part of life to miss out on.

Ds1 has been working and might have achieved higher than his predicted grades.

LimitIsUp · 18/03/2020 23:02

Look, they are not going to stitch anyone up. All students are in the same boat. Sixth form still want year 11's to join them, universities still want new undergrads. All will be well!

HerRoyalNotness · 18/03/2020 23:04

DHs DD deferred her uni place last year as she wanted better a level grades to try to get into a better uni. She’s spent the last year working and self studying, all for nothing now I suppose. She could have been finishing up her first year of uni instead. Who would have thought we’d be in this position a year later.

Sorry for all the disappointed students out there

OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack · 18/03/2020 23:05

My ds, Y11, is in this mess. Hes worked so damn hard and now for what? No one seems sure right now what they will base their qualifications on, the rumours im hearing are that it will be on predicted grades. If thats the case, Ds will at least pass everything with higher grades in his special interests. Hes an anxious mess tonight, obviously worrying about his furture plans and what this means for those. I don't know what to tell him right now tbh

ChippyMinton · 18/03/2020 23:09

I have a y11 and a y13 with all the concerns already listed. Plus a y12 who is a) worried about the impact on his A levels as he will be self teaching one-third of of this year’s course b) gutted for his siblings and c) pissed that he will have to take his exams when they didn’t.

Very long faces tonight.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 18/03/2020 23:13

Yesr 11 dd has worked do bloody hard this year and is now feeling so unmotivated. It is the uncertainty more than anything. She did ok in the mocks she took but she would expect to improve by a grade. Also she hasn't sat a mock in one subject.
Cant believe Boris has dropped this bombshell without telling us what will actually happen. Scrub that I do believe it. The poor kids are stressed enough anyway.
Going to be a tough few weeks till Easter.

StCharlotte · 18/03/2020 23:13

Imagine job applications in years to come - what are they going to say on those....

Honestly don't worry about that. I'm sure allowances will be made for the 2020 cohorts for years to come Smile

Northernsoulgirl45 · 18/03/2020 23:19

Yes it everything not just the exans. There is the prom and all extracurricular activities. The latter of course applying yo all kids.
I worry about their mental health and mine tbh but understand it is necessary.

LimitIsUp · 18/03/2020 23:20

No interviewer in the world ever is going to think 'oooh Class of 2020 - well dodgy results'

Northernsoulgirl45 · 18/03/2020 23:22

@noblegiraffe you sound lovely. I hope it goes ok tomorrow.

LittleYorkshireLass · 18/03/2020 23:23

YANBU. I feel so bad for them. I don't think it's really sunk in yet at all. Sad

Northernsoulgirl45 · 18/03/2020 23:23

O and NCS.

LimitIsUp · 18/03/2020 23:24

OMG - it's not that bad

Notthemessiah · 18/03/2020 23:28

Mocks were my son's wake up call (and mine tbh) and he has worked much harder since - recent tests were much better. I hope to God they don't factor them in too much or, even worse, Base results on them - it would be so unfair. He is massively stressed out right now.

DreamingofBrie · 18/03/2020 23:29

I have 3 Year 13 classes and a Year 11 form. I'm so gutted for them, the vast majority of them have been working their socks off this year. Will see my Y11s tomorrow morning but won't see my Y13s again as a class before we close. I'm going to encourage them to carry on studying and practising as many questions as possible in case of a change. Will try to get a card or small gift to them all before we close.
