Frozen Food

OnlyaMan · 18/03/2020 19:20

In the present hysterical hoarding situation, with the grocery shops nearly empty, my normally sensible wife said We have no food!
I pointed out that we had a lot of frozen food in the freezer.
She replied That's not food!
When I told her that I would post this remark on MumsNet, she said Well go on then!
She does not agree with me.
I have shown her this post, and she shouted said This is not food that I can COOK. It is already prepared meals.
Opinions?

Agreed it's likely 'chuck in the oven for 20 minutes' food which I wouldn't say I'd cooked. And try to avoid unless I'm having a lazy day....... but needs must in this situation. I'd always prefer fresh, but if not available then freezer food it is 😀

ErrolTheDragon · 18/03/2020 19:33

Er... why do you have a freezer full of stuff she doesn't consider to be food?Confused

EverythingChanges321 · 18/03/2020 19:35

What’s the point of storing food in a freezer if you don’t intend to eat it?
She’s bonkers.

dementedpixie · 18/03/2020 19:35

Do you eat it?
Its food?

AlCalavicci · 18/03/2020 19:37

If your DW considers this not to be food go and take it to the people that can not leave there homes and may be struggling for money , I am sure they would appreciate it .
But I too am wondering why you have a freezer full of food she wont eat / cook , is it for work lunches or similar

MitziK · 18/03/2020 19:45

Are you my DP making unauthorised posts?

I might have pointed out to him this afternoon that when, on any normal day, it is impossible for me to walk into the kitchen and cook any meal from scratch because he doesn't believe in buying anything until after we need it, he IS going out and coming back with some basic foodstuffs for a fucking change.

My freezer is, however, completely full of the utter shit he likes to put in the microwave to supplement his Haribo and Pringles diet.

Bella2020 · 18/03/2020 19:48

You can buy all manner of frozen veggies and it's said to be just a healthy as fresh. I find it much less wasteful, too. Stock up your freezer with that alongside your ready meals.

OnlyaMan · 18/03/2020 19:49

Thankyou everybody for your comments. To elaborate, we do not have something like a giant chest freezer, sufficient to support us during a nuclear winter. It is just a fridge-freezer with enough food to last us a week or two. It is not all prepared meals-some of it is mince and the like.
I think we will survive.
Many people are in much worse situations.

Singinghollybob · 18/03/2020 20:03

If she doesnt consider it food why did you/she buy it? You/she should have left it in the supermarket's freezers for those people who will eat it and appreciate it as food.

JackiFazaki · 18/03/2020 20:05

You need a stack of Fray Bentos tinned pies OP.
Only then will you be fully prepared!

OnlyaMan · 18/03/2020 20:12

I have shown all these (completely fair) comments to my wife. She is angry, and wishes to make her own comment.
Here it is-
This is the now irate wife of OnlyaMan:
I have just checked the freezer part of our fridge (consisting of 4 drawers) and the only thing I could possibly use to make a meal in there is about 400grs of minced lamb. The rest are already prepared frozen meals which my husband chose, and does eat when I do not cook a fresh meals. So nothing ever goes to waste.
To put the record straight, as a result of nearly dying two years ago of a burst, gangrened gallbladder, my digestive system, and my food taste and tolerance have been totally altered. There are a lot of things my stomach, and other organs can no longer tolerate. Therefore, when he eats the frozen food, I make myself steamed vegetables and eggs for example. When I cook for both of us, I try to make something that we both like and that my digestive system will accept. So yes, maybe I am picky, but there are reasons for it, and you should not judge anyone before you know the whole story. End of my diatribe.
This bit is from the OP (the husband). Everything my lovely wife said is fair comment.
I do not intend to add anything else. If anyone cares to make a comment, we will both read it with interest.
Thankyou for your concern.

Weird threadConfused

ErrolTheDragon · 18/03/2020 21:12

Only one possible response - LTB

Probably not practical at the moment.

OP, you misrepresented the situation - there's no food your wife can eat. So WTF was the idea of starting this thread?Hmm

FGS when shops sort themselves out don't hog all the freezer space with stuff only you can eat.

Mummyshark2019 · 18/03/2020 21:21

In these times of crisis you eat and be grateful for whatever you can that provides nourishment.

Hopeisnotastrategy · 18/03/2020 21:23

Coeliac here, my husband and I work together to make sure we are both covered. HTH. 👍🏻

UsernameUnknownn · 18/03/2020 21:23

What a weird thread!

you should not judge anyone before you know the whole story.

You should not post without telling people the whole story YABU

Namechange4nowt45 · 18/03/2020 21:24

Considering I couldn't get fruit, veg or the basic essentials today after 2 hours driving to 3 different towns your wife is being unreasonably! Food is food even if its frozen turkey twizlers

Namechange4nowt45 · 18/03/2020 21:29

Wow your wife is precious, only eats steamed veg egg etc. If you are hungry and food is very limited with the idiot panic buyers I'm sure you will appreciate any food. Google your main ingredient for ideas, lamb mince, kebab on skewers, shepherd pie,? My husband grew up poor and lived off ketchup ir sugar sandwich, Christmas day sat in the dark and cold eating raw turnip it was that bad .

1Morewineplease · 18/03/2020 21:30

Rest assured that what’s in your freezer, in a few week’s time , will definitely be real food.
Your wife is being silly.

gamerchick · 18/03/2020 21:33

So you think of your own belly and your wife thinks of you both?

Sounds about right Grin

MereDintofPandiculation · 18/03/2020 21:47

You can buy all manner of frozen veggies and it's said to be just a healthy as fresh. I find it much less wasteful, too. Stock up your freezer with that alongside your ready meals. If your wife reads this, she could pre-emptively fill the freezer with veg and leave no room for the ready meals.

Wow your wife is precious, only eats steamed veg egg etc No she is not, she has lost the ability to store the necessary substance for digestion of fat. Having an integral part of your digestive system missing and adapting your diet accordingly is not being precious.

OnlyaMan · 19/03/2020 19:55

I said, a few days ago, that I would not post again. I am, sort of, contradicting myself now.
The stuff in our fridge-freezer is not lovely. But most of it is ready-meals, many of which contain chicken and rice and so on. These things are not rubbish.
My wife's hatred of them is mainly because they have Tesco's Reduced l
Labels on them. That is why I buy and freeze them.
And in addition, freezing things makes them poisonous-apparently.

I had a really weird "can I freeze it? yes you can" email from M&S today, which given stockpiling & bare shelves in supermarkets, presumably including M&S, I thought was incredibly irresponsible.
Everything says on the packet whether or not you can freeze it anyway.

iheartislesofwight · 19/03/2020 20:32

frozen veg is probably better as it is prepared and frozen to keep it fresh, so called 'fresh' veg might have been in storage for weeks, being transported then on shop shelves before being stored at home.
