To ask what funny covenants you've got on your house

I can't sleep (can you tell) and I'm going through the deeds of the house and one of the
(Many) covenants is that we're not allowed to sell fish on a Friday 😂 I read once about a landlord who instead of charging peppercorn rent insisted on 100 red roses 🌹 😂 I'm so excited that we're finally getting there now and we move in on Friday.

No estate agent boards!

libra101 · 19/03/2020 18:19

We aren't allowed to keep chickens, but (rebelliously) we did for a while!

LexCake · 19/03/2020 18:32

Until recently, I lived in a new build second floor flat. I was not permitted to carry on the business of a miller or corn merchant.

Angelnix · 19/03/2020 18:35

Not allowed to keep caravans, motor homes or boats in our garden, fair enough, but we're not accessible by road and there are great big concrete posts blocking access!

Villageidiots · 19/03/2020 18:36

We're not allowed to keep pigs! We do have a toy one though!

Snowmouse24 · 19/03/2020 18:39

We have some good ones on ours - not allowed to brew beer and not allowed to make candles, amongst others!

MrsZola · 19/03/2020 18:40

We live a 5 minute walk from the beach and we're not allowed hovercraft access! 😁

FlossyChick · 19/03/2020 18:44

We had to take out insurance to cover a covenant on our house, the searches showed there was one -but couldn’t find what it was, who could enforce it or what it was for!!!!!

honeylulu · 19/03/2020 18:45

This wasn't mine but one I came across in my line of work. The owner of the land had to, on each midsummer quarter day, purchase a meal and a new outfit of clothing for six poor men and six poor women of the parish.

ilikemethewayiam · 19/03/2020 18:46

On our private estate there is a rule that Dogs must be kept in a good state of repair, lol!

topcat2014 · 19/03/2020 18:49

Just no washing on a Sunday, or caravans outside the front

SimplySteveRedux · 19/03/2020 18:51

Old property, shared backyard "Not to encroach, leave items, or foul past three squares left of yard".

Galdos · 19/03/2020 18:53

In my legal work years ago I came across a covenant in flat leases which forbad each flat owner from keeping cows in their flat. I assumed just clumsy drafting, but who knows?

LinnieMaple · 19/03/2020 18:54

Quite a few covenants, but considering the house was built in 1930's in Hove (actually), they weren't that surprising or weird. We couldn't hang out washing, not allowed to keep ducks, geese or farm animals and could only operate professional service businesses from the house and they could only be advertised with a brass plate of a specific size.

sliceoflife · 19/03/2020 18:56

Sell intoxicating liquor, keep a pig or excavate gravel ( think chicken are allowed though)

skodadoda · 19/03/2020 18:59

We were not allowed to keep pigs, used to be common in Lincolnshire but hygiene rules stopped the practice. We also knew someone whose deeds prohibited any erections in their garden 😯

Ccc223 · 19/03/2020 19:11

We can't have a piggery or a cowshed!

CableknitSweaters · 19/03/2020 19:17

We’re not allowed to use the loft to store anything other than seasonal items (Christmas tree for example) 1960’s build. It’s really random and the same for our neighbours too.

Raindancer411 · 19/03/2020 19:23

Not mine but when I worked in a solicitors, one of the clients was buying a 4th floor flat and one was that you could not keep a house on wheels, roundabout or chickens on the balcony Hmm

helpIhateclothesshopping · 19/03/2020 19:51

I don't recall ever looking at ours. I can't imagine it's that exciting. It was built in the 70s

VenusClapTrap · 19/03/2020 20:09

There is a dotted line across the garden on our deeds. We are not allowed to build a garage or shed to the west of the line. East is fine.

We also have to let our neighbour have access to our pump and water tank. That neighbour recently asked us to drain the tank and divert the gutter that feeds into it, because he says it’s making the wall of his cottage damp.

Roughasabadgersbum · 19/03/2020 20:12

We can't run a brothel or a chicken farm!! 🙂

LadyofMisrule · 19/03/2020 20:24

Our current house is slightly dull - we must retain the corrugated fence at the bottom of the garden. Previous houses have included one with a nightsoil path, that can only be used by people if they are carrying a bucket of it, and one that allowed access to our barn but only for the purpose of slaughtering animals.

julybaby32 · 19/03/2020 20:32

Only allowed to keep a school if it is a small school for young ladies. (I guess we could fit 4 quite slim ones into the living room if the teacher stood in the kitchen doorway.)
