AIBU to cancel a smear test?

Total dilemma as I know how important these tests are. Have one booked in for this Thursday and have got the standard NHS text message giving me the option to cancel. I'm thinking that I should probably go as they wouldn't have sent me that text if they didn't want me to attend. Our GP surgery is currently only making telephone appointments and then if necessary, I presume, making an appointment for a face to face. I'm waiting for the surgery to open to ring and ask them but I'm just wondering WWYD in the meantime.

I would go if the gp surgery can still do the test.

PurpleDaisies · 17/03/2020 07:52

Cross posted with you.

If it’s a new continuous cough, don’t go.

LemonScentedStickyBat · 17/03/2020 07:52

They won’t want you in with a cold, am sure of it. Reschedule I reckon.

MarthasGinYard · 17/03/2020 07:53

Aargh forgot to add I have a cold and a cough.

In that case No

I'd Stay away from the surgery

wonkylegs · 17/03/2020 07:54

If you have a cough you need to cancel and self isolate as per guidance DO NOT attend the clinic
They will reschedule at a later date

Mintjulia · 17/03/2020 07:54

Call them or email them and ask.

HedgehogDramas · 17/03/2020 07:54

No it's about a three week old cough, no breathing problems apart from the usual bunged up cold stuff. I can so understand why people are so confused.

Samcro · 17/03/2020 07:57

i would go if you just have a cold.

PurpleDaisies · 17/03/2020 07:58

That is fine-if you rang 111 with that information they’d tell you you wouldn’t have to self isolate.

It’s up to you but I’d definitely go. You don’t know when you might be able to reschedule for.

pinkazing · 17/03/2020 08:00

I would go, get it over with.

Gustavo1 · 17/03/2020 08:02

Don’t go. You aren’t well. Passing that on to a critical worker is not a great idea at this time.

Theresnobslikeshowb · 17/03/2020 08:05

Chances are it’s not Covid-19 as you’ve had it three weeks, however, if you were the nurse doing the smear and a patient came in coughing and unwell would you take their word that it’s just a cough? I certainly wouldn’t. Cancel for another day.

HedgehogDramas · 17/03/2020 08:06

How weird, I've literally just got an e-mail reminder about this appt. I'll plan on going as when I made the appt I did mention to the receptionist that I had a cold and a cough, but of course the appt was made well before all the new government info from yesterday. I'll still give them a call though and if they say don't come I'll update you just for info. Thanks all - I'm not usually so dithery!!

If your surgury is anything like mine I think you may find its been cancelled for you! I was due to go on thursday for blood tests and even though I am ok they have cancelled it! I would ring first before you set off.

BrieAndChilli · 17/03/2020 08:09

You do realise some people get coronavirus very mildly, just because you don’t have a fever and are laid up in hospital with breathing difficulties doesn’t mean you don’t have it?
Plus even if it’s not you have some sort of bug, why spread that around and put more people under the weather.

TheGirlFromStoryville · 17/03/2020 08:09

Double check with the surgery before you go.
I'd still go if you are able to.

HedgehogDramas · 17/03/2020 08:13

Yes I do realise all of this @BrieAndChilli hence my dilemma!! Surgery opens in 20 mins so I'll def ring them.

I missed a smear recently because I have DS2 at home. He has SEND and isn't currently allowed to go to school. I obviously can't take him with me. I don't have many family who are able or willing to help. So I just didn't bother.

I got a call yesterday from the nurse telling me I need to 'try to sort some childcare out' because I have a history of severe diskaryosis (please excuse spelling) so my smears are apparently particularly important. It's kind of tough shit for me though, no babysitter, no appointment.

DS has an appointment coming up that for other reasons DP will be taking him, so I'll try to book the smear for then whilst he's got the day off work.

If you don't have anything stopping you except a cold then just go to your smear. You've got a cold and a cough but unless you're a medical marvel you won't be coughing out of your fanny so go get probed!!

Ughmaybenot · 17/03/2020 08:28

I’m surprised they’re still doing them. I wouldn’t go.

AnnoyedByAlfieBear · 17/03/2020 08:30

I've had a letter saying I'm due one but I though Boris said not to use the NHS unless I'm an emergency.

Gruffalosandbuffalos · 17/03/2020 08:30

I took my 3 year old for his vaccinations yesterday with a cold and they were happy to do them. 1 year old has hers booked for later in the week and also has a cold but will still be having them.

GabsAlot · 17/03/2020 08:36

I was due one last week i cancelled -dont fancy mixing with idiots that are still turning up coughing everywhere

MissFlite · 17/03/2020 08:48

I'm due one too and dithering about booking as its non-essential. I figure waiting a few weeks won't hurt.

HedgehogDramas · 17/03/2020 08:56

Have just got through to the surgery and ironically the Sister is off sick so it's cancelled!! So that's my dilemma sorted out. I wonder why I still had the confirmation e-mail through this morning though. Never mind - all sorted.
