AIBU to cancel a smear test?

Total dilemma as I know how important these tests are. Have one booked in for this Thursday and have got the standard NHS text message giving me the option to cancel. I'm thinking that I should probably go as they wouldn't have sent me that text if they didn't want me to attend. Our GP surgery is currently only making telephone appointments and then if necessary, I presume, making an appointment for a face to face. I'm waiting for the surgery to open to ring and ask them but I'm just wondering WWYD in the meantime.

Those confirmation emails come automatically.

Glad it’s all sorted.

My friend at work had a smear this coming Friday, and she has cancelled it. She wasn't officially due until I think June/July anyway, (as she last had it a few days after her 25th birthday in July 2017, three years back.) And that was an OK result. So she isn't too worried.

She also feels like the NHS have a lot on their plate right now, so wants to free up the time of the NHS professionals. (And.... she isn't right keen on going to the GP surgery right now, for obvious reasons.) Blush

I was a year late for one of mine once (had one June 2010, and was due June 2013.) I moved house in early 2013, a few months before it was due, and didn't get the reminder letter. So in early 2014, I went for a blood test for something, and the nurse said I was a year overdue for my smear.

I had it, and was fine. I think the smear test picks up anything that's likely to turn cancerous in the next 5 years. So being a few months late for it doesn't matter

I had one today. They are still doing them but have no idea RE result timescales.

Definitely don't go if you have a cough of any kind, otherwise get it done asap.

I'm due one. I contacted the GP surgery and they asked me to hold off for a few weeks to help ease their loads. I expect it'll be longer than a few weeks though.

I’ve got one booked for Friday. I rang earlier (GP’s) & then said to still come. So I’m going.

DinoGreen · 17/03/2020 16:29

I’ve got one on Thursday too and they have told me still to come. They are moving to telephone GP appointments to ease footfall into the surgery but have said nurse appointments are still going ahead for now, however follow guidelines so don’t go if fever or cough etc.

DinoGreen · 17/03/2020 16:29

Also mine is more than a year overdue so I’m not so inclined to cancel ...

Tinysarah1985 · 18/03/2020 15:00

I work in a surgery and we have been telling patients today that we will honour any prebooked appointments unless they have a cough or fever. We give them the option to cancel but have been advised not to rebook anything.

Fluffycloudland77 · 18/03/2020 15:25

I cancelled mine but they said they would have text me to cancel anyway.

Will re-visit it when all of this is over.

GrandTheftWalrus · 18/03/2020 16:00

I'm overdue mine but only a few months. But I'll wait till this is all sorted.

But dd who is 3 is due vaccinations next week, and I'm wondering if they will go ahead as from friday her nursery is closing for the foreseeable future.
