To go for a new job, at the moment?

TheOtherSideOfTheMountain · 16/03/2020 17:59

Did try posting in the virus thread but no response and I'd genuinely appreciate some opinions as not sure what to do.

Is now a really awful time to consider a job change, with the whole coronavirus situation?

Been in current role a long long time. Am important to the business, have trust there and know how to do the job with my eyes closed - even remotely, and juggling around kids at home.

Was looking to move due to stagnation / company not doing as well as once was / being offered a bit more money (3k more a year).

But would it be really stupid at the moment, with what's going on? To jeopardise the security I have. Plus go somewhere where I'd be trying to get started in a new role with all this happening.

I had to make the same decision last week. My is within the same trust, nhs, but a different department. I did give the current situation some thought but decided to go for it.

BeNiceToYourSister · 16/03/2020 19:15

I’m in a similar position and have decided to stay put for now. I’m fortunate that I can work from home and have the security of knowing I’ll still be paid if my office closes for several weeks. If DH was on a high salary I’d consider moving now if the opportunity arose, but we’re both fairly low earners so no way in hell would I risk it in the current situation as we’ve DC and a mortgage. I guess it really depends on the kind of job - a highly specialised role would probably be a safer bet, but my type of role is pretty expendable so I’m playing it safe! Good luck if you do go for it.

NotNegan · 16/03/2020 19:22

I was made redundant and started a new job last week.

It's absolutely the worst time. I've no idea what I'm doing and my team is self isolating. I feel completely out of my depth and I'm so worried I won't get paid if the office closes.

I'd stick with security over £3k a year!

Flipper1234 · 16/03/2020 19:39

I’d stick with the security of the job you have UNLESS the new job is an industry that’s likely to do well during this pandemic (eg healthcare, online grocery store)

TotesGodsWill · 16/03/2020 19:43

I’m in limbo moving to a new role within the same company, they’re using this as an excuse to prolong it (they’re always dicks about people moving on).

I work for a company with good sick pay, who have said they will pay full pay if we have to self isolate or close the office. I’m good at what I do and can cover a variety of roles within my team. I have enough long service to get a decent pay out if I was made redundant.

I wouldn’t risk moving to a job with another company at the moment. Especially in certain industries that will be heavily impacted by current events. But if I had a currently insecure job then I wouldn’t have all those reasons to stay put. So I think it depends on how good you have it where you are now and how that compares to new job.

PenisBeakerDipper · 16/03/2020 19:53

How much is 3k to you and what sort of industry? I think a lot of companies are going to fold - many track the market - so I’d stay where you are at the moment unless your industry was rock solid in 2008.

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 16/03/2020 19:58

I was looking but have stopped now. I think we're in for a huge recession so stability is key

Torvi · 16/03/2020 20:03

I'm just working my notice and shitting myself. My new job is in an industry which will be affected enormously Sad
I'd go for stability right now

Lifeisgenerallyfun · 16/03/2020 21:26

In my industry no one is interviewing now as everyone wfh.

JaceLancs · 16/03/2020 21:30

I’m currently recruiting and may have to delay interviews and put start dates on hold until we know more
Current permanent staff will be ok for at least 6 months but I can’t afford to take anyone else on until the implications are clearer
I would stay put

PegasusReturns · 16/03/2020 21:31

I knows of a few people that have resigned in last few months who are now desperate to keep their existing jobs.

I think moving jobs now would be crazy. How would you establish/prove yourself of working from home? If you’re not working from home what happens if you want to? You’d be last in possibly first out of the business began to struggle.

TheTrollFairy · 16/03/2020 21:33

I wouldn’t risk moving at the moment.
So many different sectors are currently at risk of job losses and financial disruption. Today alone I have heard of 4 people losing their jobs with many others being put on reduced hours.
Unless you know that your new job will be immune to any financial disruption or redundancy then it’s just not worth it for £3 a year

Sooverthemill · 16/03/2020 21:36

My DH wants to look for a different job closer to home. I've suggested he wait a while to see what's happening especially as his current employer has asked him to work from home rather than do the 6 round trip to work and he is known and will get sick pay where he is if he gets sick. But when the health emergency has passed why not?

Darbs76 · 16/03/2020 21:40

I personally wouldn’t be looking to move jobs at the moment

DoubleAction · 16/03/2020 21:40

I have an interview on Friday, although I fully expect it to be cancelled. I've spent this evening writing another job application, just to distract myself tbh. I'll send it but I expect the recruitment process will be postponed.

It will depend what the role is. It would be very hard to start a new job while everyone is working from home. If it's a sector that will be badly affected, I'd expect them not to recruit atm.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 16/03/2020 21:48

I start a new contract later this week and it’s likely that will all be remote working.

If I wasn’t a freelancer I would stick with a permanent role rather than looking to move. If the worst happened and your old role disappeared at least you might get a redundancy payment and would have some employment rights if you have been there 2 years.

TheOtherSideOfTheMountain · 17/03/2020 07:26

Thank you all, this is really helpful and confirms my gut instinct. It's just good to get other opinions as it's a bit hard to lose perspective at the moment and not feel sure if I'm being unnecessarily paranoid. DH very much feels I should take the new job - he is all about the money, and also knows I've been frustrated in my current role for some time. But security is so important...and as you say, at least I'd be entitled to redundancy here after such a long service. I do worry my current company may well fold from this situation.

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 17/03/2020 17:29

I just spoke to a recruiter friend, and everything has pretty much disappeared overnight.

There will soon be a massive glut of qualified, redundant candidates and very few jobs.

It will be shit.

I narrowly missed out on a job recently and at the time I was gutted but now I'm thinking I would have been starting around now and it's certainly not a good time to start a new job, most of my colleagues would be wfh. Not to mention if they want to make cuts I'd probably be first in line.

I'll have to wait it out until a better time.. at least it means I can get some more time on my CV in my current role

xILikeJamx · 17/03/2020 18:00

I was looking at new jobs over the past few weeks as I'm really not enjoying my current one at the moment.

My main concern now though would be being on some sort of probationary period during this spell - easy to be gotten rid of. Just going to ride it out at my current place for now.

HundredMilesAnHour · 17/03/2020 18:15

I had a final interview for a new job this coming Monday. I was told I was the clear favourite for the role. But they've just put all new roles on hold so interview now cancelled and role is now dead for the foreseeable future.

It wasn't a surprise but I have been unemployed for a long time (following redundancy) and I am almost out of money. Not getting this job is going to have a serious financial impact.

LovelyBitOfSquirrelJackie · 17/03/2020 18:15

Better the devil you know, at the moment, I think. Unless you are working in an in-demand industry.

Faraway20 · 17/03/2020 18:18

Eeek I have a new job starting the beginning of June but haven't handed my notice in yet in my current job.

Current job is a small business that might not survive this anyway but might, I'd say 70/30 it will survive.

New job is 10k a year more! Still a small ish independent business in a different sector, not sure how badly they will be affected..

WWYD?

Faraway20 · 17/03/2020 18:19

Different industry, not sector, both jobs are private sector

TheOtherSideOfTheMountain · 18/03/2020 10:46

@Faraway20 your situation is different. For that amount more money and if your current company is at risk of not surviving anyway, I'd take the new job.

CeeCeeEnnEss · 18/03/2020 12:11

I’ve just ended my notice with my long term job and am starting my own business next week. Shitting it, but I’m going to try my best.
