To think there will be a baby boom in the next 10 - 12 months

With social distancing and people staying at home more over the next few months I think this is inevitable. I don't think there are generally enough school places etc at present to cope with this though the government will need to figure this out in a few years if it happens.

LOVE the quarenteens! They could also be a girl band Grin

We were going to start TTC in May but will definitely not be stopping contraception if this situation hasn't ended. Pregnancy is a vulnerable time anyway and with the NHS in crisis I wouldn't risk it.

PennyArrowBar · 15/03/2020 21:57

I'm actively TTC. My ovaries don't work so barring a miracle I won't become pregnant. I'm not going to stop trying though.

SallySun123 · 15/03/2020 22:15

I think it’s more likely that people are going to regret having children rather than wanting more. That’s how I feel after a single day self isolating with mine 😆

DrMadelineMaxwell · 15/03/2020 22:16

There was a documented raise in birth rates after the Spanish flu pandemic.

But they didn't have the internet or TV,

SallySun123 · 15/03/2020 22:17

@PennyArrowBar sorry to hear that. My comment seemed insensitive directly following on from yours 😳 I didn’t see it.

indemMUND · 15/03/2020 22:20

And there's me, chronically single and haven't had sex for a year. Fill yer boots you lucky buggers.

PennyArrowBar · 15/03/2020 22:27

Don't worry Sally I do have a 3.4 year old who has upped his attitude game recently. Some particularly trying days I definitely put myself off the idea of wanting another Grin

nancy75 · 15/03/2020 22:27

indemMUND if I’m stuck indoors with DH for 4 months I’ll be ready to strangle him by week 3, you can have him Grin

AngeloMysterioso · 15/03/2020 22:32

Quaranteens aka Coronials

maggienolia · 15/03/2020 22:46

Well past it here but DH can only manage it when Spurs win.
So it's been a bit sparse here recently Wink

FlyingPandas · 15/03/2020 22:56

I suspect you’re right op but it won’t be the only boom we have as a result of this, sadly.

It’s also highly likely that there will be a boom in

-self harm
-suicide
-divorce
-domestic abuse
-substance abuse
-child neglect/hunger/abuse (there are so many children for whom school is a refuge and who are likely to suffer more if and when schools close).

Etc etc etc.

A baby boom will be the least of our problems tbh.

Redshoeblueshoe · 15/03/2020 23:10

Could we call them the Quaranteenies ?
Then they could sing We are the Quaranteenies
To the tune of We are the Ovalteenies. If you don't know it ask your gran

Redshoeblueshoe · 15/03/2020 23:11

I meant to put that in italics Blush

Witchofzog · 15/03/2020 23:13

@flyingPandas sadly I suspect you are right. The lack of sporting events will probably contribute to an increase in DV. The school closures will mean many children miss their main meal of the day. The isolation will lead to poorer mental health. It's a scary time

There was a baby boom in 2009 after the economic crash, so I think this will cause similar.

Kokeshi123 · 16/03/2020 02:32

Don't think so. The birth rate rose very gently over about 2000-2010, fuelled largely I think by higher birthrates among foreign-born mothers, and has fallen since then.

theconversation.com/its-a-national-crisis-uks-birth-rate-is-falling-dramatically-121399

The birthrate will almost certainly fall after this, probably quite a lot. People will not want the worry of catching CV in pregnancy or of having to get appointments and give birth at hospitals which could be very overstretched. There will be big economic worries and a huge amount of uncertainty for many, many people. General drumbeat of doom and negativity at the moment, due to CV and a whole bunch of other things. And confinement, home schooling, illness and worrying about/nursing sick older family members, not to mention the fact that people are aware that they are going to have to manage without help from grandparents, are going to place a lot of pressure on people's relationships and make people very reluctant to get pregnant.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 16/03/2020 02:43

I wondered about this earlier. If women can’t see their GP to get contraception it’s an obvious consequence.

marmitedoughnut · 16/03/2020 05:02

Well past it here but DH can only manage it when Spurs win.

Funny you should say that, every time I hear Covid 19 I expect it to be followed up with Spurs nil.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 16/03/2020 07:14

Condoms can be bought in many places including online and there’s always abstinence.

Thisisworsethananticpated · 16/03/2020 07:31

I sadly think the domestic abuse rates will go through the roof

PennyArrowBar · 16/03/2020 08:05

Condoms can be bought in many places including online and there’s always abstinence

Which doesn't work if you're in an abusive relationship and you partner refuses to wear them.

StCharlotte · 16/03/2020 08:09

"Quaranteens aka Coronials"

Brilliant!

ShatnersWig · 16/03/2020 08:50

Probably. From people who can least afford to support them.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 16/03/2020 11:57

I was thinking more of the women who are in abusive/dysfunctional relationships where the men won’t wear condoms.

DingleberryRose · 16/03/2020 13:32

Let’s hope not!!! There’s way too many children as it is!
