To not pay for a car accident

I was reversing and touched a car at low speed (they were stationary). The guy instantly says he wants my insurance details etc. So I’m thinking agh excess and premium increase.

I then look at my car to find no damage. There is no way I could have caused the damage to his car. I drive a tiny car, it has plastic bumpers.

I’m refusing to pay for the repairs. I haven’t been provided with a cost etc. I would rather I went to my insurance company and asked them to prove the damage. People think I should just pay.

Guard your loins because he will probably also claim whiplash.

Manchestermanchester · 14/03/2020 23:42

@joansw Yes can do but going so slow good luck.

I’m trying to get quotes but because the claim is still going, what do I put? At fault? I don’t know the claim value either.

You don't know the damage underneath. Your insurance provider will have trusted garages that will provide quotes and information about any damage, what is old or new and if it is consistent with the accident details.
They decide if it is genuine or not. They will argue the case if something doesn't fit.

DH’s car got hit side on at low speed. The car that hit his was fine, but DH’s was not Confused The wing was all dented and the door wouldn’t open. So just because your car is fine, it doesn’t mean you didn’t do any damage to their vehicle.

Yes to at fault. Compare the market let you put unknown cost (if you're doing new insurance- it's not clear what the quote is for). And if the quote is for repairs please leave it to your insurance company.

As someone whose car has been hit by another driver, you don't have to worry too much about his insurance premiums - if they do go up it won't be by much. I hope your conscience is clear now Grin

@hula008 great. I think he wants it repaired without his excess being affected.

I came to a rolling stop against a car in ice, bumper to bumper (old, knackered). No damage at all, took lots of photos at the scene. They chased me for ages to pay them cash. I said I wasn’t engaging with them until the sent me some evidence.
My photos showed no damage but they then started sending me photos of the ‘damage’ I had caused their car.
Luckily those photos didn’t match with mine, also my car was too small to have caused them anyway. Told them I had sent all the images to my insurers, strangely never heard from them again (I half think they had damaged their car to get some money).
My insurers tried to put my insurance up because of it though!

Insurers will always put your money up after you’ve had a prang, whether or not you claim them. Apparently it’s because you are more likely to have the same thing happen again in future. Which seems a bit unlikely in some cases as what happened is so random, such as a liar trying to claim for damage that had been done by someone else!

cookiemonster5 · 15/03/2020 13:16

If it's a business vehicle then he won't have any excess to pay nor will his premiums go to so you are arguing a nonexistent point.

Your bumper could well have cracked his. Your "soft plastic" bumper has flexibility. His "hard plastic" bumper doesn't so it will crack.

Accept you did damage and move on.
