UK based school trip

Hi. My primary school is going on a 3 day UK based residential in 2 weeks. As a parent, would you still be sending your child?

The school will cancel it.

LtGreggs · 13/03/2020 18:22

I probably would - our school has said uk Easter trips still currently planned to go ahead. In our case, it is same group of children they generally spend all day with in the classroom, and transport is coach, so I don't think it's any extra exposure.

WickedlyPetite · 13/03/2020 18:23

I would wait until the day before, and decide then. Things may change a lot in 2 weeks.

Ruby1991 · 13/03/2020 18:23

I would decide closer to the time.

I work in a childcare setting and all trips have been cancelled until Easter

grannyshark · 13/03/2020 18:30

I expect it will be cancelled by the school but if it isn't then I'd let my child go - schools are very good at risk assessments and making the right decisions.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 13/03/2020 18:32

My child is also booked to go a residential trip in the uk. I will be gutted if they cancel it.

MirriMazDuur · 13/03/2020 18:32

I think they'll cancel it too. We had a concert next week which has just been cancelled.

Mine too. I'm really hoping they won't cancel. My dc will be gutted. I can't see the trip as being any more risky than being at school.

grannyshark · 13/03/2020 18:38

My DC's concert at a care home for the elderly has, understandably, been cancelled.

happytoday73 · 13/03/2020 18:39

My child is booked on something similar. There is only their year together...no other schools... So I see it as about same (if not safer) than school.
They will be gutted in canceled and unlikely to be able to reorganise

Crumbwell · 13/03/2020 18:47

I think what worries me is that we won’t be the only school there and the accommodation is like a big hostel. It’s a massive activity centre and all the safety equipment will be shared. There are usually groups from all over Europe, but I’m guessing they won’t be there! I’m also concerned that if someone gets ill whilst we’re there we might have to stay there for weeks!!!

formerbabe · 13/03/2020 18:47

The thing is if the schools cancel, will we even get our money back? Surely we only will if they cancel on the basis of official advice?

MaureenMLove · 13/03/2020 18:48

We've cancelled all trips UK and abroad right up until May half term. In fact, we've cancelled all non essential staff absences.

Isthistrueor · 13/03/2020 18:49

Yes I would, children aren’t really affected by it.

formerbabe · 13/03/2020 18:49

I highly doubt it. What on earth would stop a parent driving to the centre, putting their own child in the car and taking them home if they fell ill?

Crumbwell · 13/03/2020 18:57

I know the children will be fine, it’s the staff taking them that I’m worried about.

My DC is on a residential trip right now. Having a great time by all accounts. They left before the updated advice though, I don't know if the school will cancel future trips.

TotesGodsWill · 13/03/2020 19:15

Its such a fast changing issue that I couldn’t say yet. So much has changed just in the last 24 hours who knows what the situation will be in 2 weeks? At this point I would expect the school will likely cancel, but they may be concerned about being able to refund parents if they cancel when it’s not official advice to do so, so may be waiting and seeing for now

annie987 · 13/03/2020 19:46

We have 3 different residentials planned.
We called the companies today to enquire about protocol if we are advised by the government to close.
They all said they will not be closing as they are not classed as educational establishments and they will not refund a penny or allow a change of dates!
They advised that even if the school is closed the trips go ahead as planned!

fourandahalfkids · 13/03/2020 19:56

Ds is due to go to London in June on a trip we are expecting this to be cancelled, unknown if we will get our money back. Dd3 was due to go to Holland next week on a school exchange, this has been cancelled by the receiving school. Just had an email today to say they cannot guarantee that we will see any money back. So I will most likely be out of pocket for 2 school trips.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 17/03/2020 08:01

My child's has been cancelled. It was next week.

Actionhasmagic · 17/03/2020 08:01

There’s no need to worry about going. This trip will be cancelled as the cases will have exploded by then

MT2017 · 17/03/2020 08:34

@fourandahalfkids doesn't the school's insurance cover the Holland trip?

Baconking · 17/03/2020 08:53

As pp said it will likely be cancelled.

My child's 1 night trip 30 minutes away next week has been cancelled

Jespers · 17/03/2020 09:19

'My primary school is going on a 3 day UK based residential in 2 weeks'

no they aren't. No way that's going ahead. Schools will be closed, or the centre will be closed or the teachers or staff will be in isolation, or they won't be able to guarantee hygiene measures due to lack of cleaning equipment/soap/gel.
