To ask for preggo sickness help

My sickness in this pregnancy is nothing like my last. It's really awful. I've been signed off work for three weeks as I am struggling so badly.
I can keep enough down to stay hydrated so it's probably not true HG, but the hardest bit is how much my stomach aches as well as the nausea.
I've been fully checked out, I don't actually have a stomach bug and the pregnancy is early days but going well (scan has ruled out molar or ectopic).
But the painful stomach and abdominal cramping is unbearable - it's like having food poisoning as well as the classic hungry/nausea rolling stomach and vomiting.
Did anyone else have this? Have you got any tricks to take the edge off? (Don't say ginger or sea bands - they are not helping)

I had this. I was being sick 15 times a day but could keep stuff down 50% of the time. I crawled into the doctors and begged for antisickness. He handed me cyclizine which knocked me out for the first couple of days I took it and then became my salvation. It’s safe in pregnancy and meant I was able to nourish and water myself, as well as functioning like a human being. Don’t be a hero. Get medication.

YukoandHiro · 12/03/2020 17:01

My GP said no meds til the second trimester - is that not right? I'm in the middle of week 8 so expecting this and next week to be my worst (it was in my first pregnancy, albeit with much more mild symptoms) so maybe if it doesn't slow after that I'll go back.

Rosebel · 12/03/2020 17:06

Sorry but your GP is talking rubbish. I,took anti sickness tablets from 5 weeks and so far no problems. Mine got much better at 16 weeks so there is hope. I'd go back and maybe try to see another GP.

putputput · 12/03/2020 17:06

That's definitely not right of your Gp. Contact pregnancy sickness support for advice.

Moraelin · 12/03/2020 17:07

Absolutely wrong. Go back to a different GP and get some medication, there are lots you can take. There's a thread on the pregnancy board called hyperemesis support which is really helpful. Also check out the pregnancy sickness support website, they have a list of all of the safe medication

HulaHoop2 · 12/03/2020 17:16

The only thing that helped me was never letting myself get hungry. I ate unsalted peanuts 24/7.

It sounds like your MS is a bit more extreme though - definitely go back to the doctor and kick up a fuss!

GaaaaarlicBread · 12/03/2020 17:26

All I could have was crisps, fresh orange with lemonade and then took Cyclizine prescribed by my dr . It’s very safe and I took it for weeks. My sickness went at week 10 thankfully. Hang in there you’re doing great x

MrsH497 · 12/03/2020 17:29

OP your GP is talking bollocks I had medication from 10 weeks due to HG. I was "only" sick maybe twice a day but nausea was 24/7. You can have medication in 1st trimester. They don't like giving ondasetron in 1st trimester as there are slight increased risks of cleft lip/pallet. But you need to insist on medication

YukoandHiro · 12/03/2020 17:50

Thanks everyone I will go back next week. Looks like my workplace is shutting anyway due to coronavirus so at least when I go back I can just work from home right next to the toilet!
Really emotional at the moment as feeling so grim, worried about my parents and corona and my daughter is not getting the hang of potty training...

I have had severe HG, being sick 15-20 times a day on average for close on 7 months. Signed off work travel. If it helps I could keep some fluids and food down, still diagnosed with severe HG!

Currently 20 wks pregnant with no. 2 and been hospitalised twice already, now signed off work travel. This time round I have a trio of anti-sickness meds to take and have to use them on rotation so not too much of either. I've had them since I was I think 12 wks (my sickness started at 6wks). They are cyclizine, ondansetron and metaclopramide.

Pre these I had buccastem (dissolve under gum) as I couldn't keep the tablets down either and was prescribed these from about 7 wks.

If one more person said to me about fecking ginger biscuits or sickness bands I'd have killed them - they don't help severe HG, maybe general morning sickness, but not HG it's a whole different ballgame.

The sore heads from dehydration also don't help and you can take a small amount of aspirin when pregnant and this has helped with them at least.

Doc said I'm the (lucky!) minority where it lasts beyond 16 wks so fingers crossed you get some relief soon OP. And def go see your doc, in fact another doc for a second opinion. Ask about the meds I've mentioned.

opticaldelusion · 12/03/2020 17:58

Preggo? Grim.

CantKeepSecrets · 12/03/2020 18:01

I'm on the exact same rotation of medication as the poster above. I have been on medication since 7 weeks and was the same in my last pregnancy too. Go back to your GP , it's something to be taken seriously and do not accept the sneering "morning sickness" comments.

Try ginger biscuits...

Joking , vomit all over the next person to suggest this.

CantKeepSecrets · 12/03/2020 18:04

Sorry- forgot to say I'm 20 weeks now and have been on the medication since 7 weeks. In my last pregnancy it lasted right up until delivery so please don't hesitate on getting on the right medication as you could be in for a long ride.

lynzpynz · 12/03/2020 18:05

"Try ginger biscuits...

@CantKeepSecrets 😂😂😂 this made me snort laughing!

OneIsAWorldOfBooks · 12/03/2020 18:26

100% see a different gp and get some meds. I tried to stay off medication as long as possible, surrendered at about 8 weeks and have been on promethazine since then, currently 14+5. It didn’t stop the vomiting completely for me but at least allowed me to get through the day at work and I’m back to being able to cook and eat almost normally again now. I’m still sick if I get hungry, so try to snack on something dry and salty (ready salted crisps and cheese for me). I feel your pain with people suggesting ginger biscuits! I could’ve cried when people at work suggested to me that all I needed was a couple of ginger nuts when I was sat in a dark room heaving every time I moved despite having taken my whole days worth of meds in one morning.

Feelingpoorlysick · 12/03/2020 18:29

Definitely ask for anti sickness meds. I had HG, I was sick 30 times in 24 hours at my worst. Meds made it a bit more bearable.

Winterwoollies · 12/03/2020 19:07

Your GP is full of shit. Morning sickness can start to abate in the second trimester. My midwife, obstetrician and GP all said Cyclizine has proven itself safe in early pregnancy for years (obvs they can’t do official drug trials for ethical reasons). I’d have truly not coped without it. Go back or see a different GP.

YukoandHiro · 12/03/2020 19:21

Thanks everyone - good to know meds are an option.
I'm actually only vomiting a couple of times a day but go to the toilet feeling like it's coming at least every 20 mins and it wakes me all night too. I didn't realise severe nausea itself was sometimes classed as HG.

OP posts:
YukoandHiro · 12/03/2020 19:23

To add, I would like to cope without meds if I can as I have high risk pregnancies and am likely to be on multiple medications in the second and third trimester for other complications. But it maybe that I just can't hang on another 8 weeks for this to pass. I can't imagine managing to work even from home feeling like this.

OP posts:
DysonFury · 12/03/2020 19:29

You can take meds from day 1. I had hideous morning sickness and took tablets from 6 weeks when the sickness took hold.

TheAugusta · 12/03/2020 19:29

I had similar - cyclizine from 6 weeks was a life saver and I had to keep something in my stomach at all times - I ate a lot of sandwiches! I also found coke and fizzy water helpful. I had a tablet 3 times a day but when I was recovering I reduced to 2, then 1 and none for the last few months so you could tailor how much medicine you needed. Hope you feel better soon, it's so unpleasant.

ihaveaquestionplease · 12/03/2020 19:32

Sleep was the only thing that helped me.
Sipping cold fizzy drinks was more palatable than water too (usually I prefer water)

Passanotherjaffacake · 12/03/2020 19:39

I also wanted to cope without meds (although was not as bad as you so I would not blame you for wanting meds - nor anyone else of course!).

I ate constantly, let myself have whatever my body said it wanted (beige) and allowed myself a drink of coke when it was really bad - but I don’t drink coffee so came nowhere near the caffeine limit. I used the travel sickness bracelets and found them helpful. I also really enjoyed moaning about to to my husband every evening... literally whatever gets you through. Mine lasted until week 36 so I think he fancied a divorce by then. I also used to have an evening bath to help with stomach cramping.

Hope you feel better soon. I can’t imagine morning sickness with a toddler so you are already smashing it as far as I am concerned. Xx

DressesWithPocketsRockMyWorld · 12/03/2020 19:42

Your GP is talking shit please go see a different one.

I was only sick a few times a day but the nausea was all day every day. I was prescribed phenergan which I should have really gone and got changed as it made me feel awful but I was too tired to string a coherent thought together.

I am so sorry for you it is truly awful.

Winterwoollies · 12/03/2020 20:14

I tried everything before crawling to the doctors. I didn’t know at that point that I could have antisickness pills. I asked everyone for advice. All I got was ‘ginger biscuits’ or ‘sips of water’ or ‘keep snacking’. Obviously that did nothing. Nothing! I still was crippled with nausea or vomiting. Once I ate my usual toast breakfast and threw it all up into my plate without warning. It was awful. I caught it though.

These medicines are safe. After the thalidomide horror, they are super cautious. Don’t feel you’ve been weak or failed because you need some meds. And don’t beat yourself up because you’ll need meds later on, too. Is that a definite?

I just found that when the sickness is bad enough, nothing helps it except medication.
