I had just finished work this afternoon and got DS from nursery. I went into my local supermarket who I'm a regular at and generally have a good experience there.

DS was sitting in the trolley. I bought some alcohol.. ''Sorry, can't serve you that'' I asked why not, I have ID if you need it. The woman said ''Yes but does the person you're with?'' I asked if that was a joke and she said no, with a very straight face. I said fine then and the alcohol was put aside.

I then go to the kiosk for my lottery ticket for Friday. The man there asked for ID, so I provided it Hmm He then said he couldn't remember what the cut off point is, as in the younger year to make me old enough to buy a ticket, so said he'd have to wait for his manager to confirm who's on lunch. I said ''Forget it jobsworth'' and left.

Was I really that unreasonable? I still feel quite annoyed at the sheer stupidity!

Well you were obviously buying the alcohol for your nursery aged son, don't think you can pull the wool over our eyes!
And the lottery ticket, well, they can't be too careful really can they?

Really? I regularly buy wine as part of my weekly shop with my kids in tow. Never, ever been refused!

SharpieInThe · 11/03/2020 19:44

Sounds like they've recently been caught selling when they shouldn't.

BingPot99 · 11/03/2020 19:45

It's not the second person's fault you were already in a bad mood.... Also, maybe he was new / couldn't do the maths in his head etc. No need to be rude.

The till should have a note that pops up that tells you what the birthdate needs to be before in order to make you old enough.

I work in a very small supermarket and we're not that up to date with tech, but even OUR tills do this. Sounds as though he was telling a wee bit of a porky pie.

And I echo Sharpie, I think they've had a clampdown because someone has been caught out selling something to someone they shouldn't. But common sense should still apply!

JasonBrun · 11/03/2020 19:47

How ridiculous of them.

I would complain to head office personally. Ok if you're with a teenager maybe but a nursery aged child! Discrimination against parents, and mums in particular since they are more likely to have DC with them.

Mlou32 · 11/03/2020 19:48

I know it was frustrating but there isn't really any excuse to be rude to people and make them feel like shit.

Anotherthink · 11/03/2020 19:49

The second one wanted to wait for a manager to finish their lunch because they couldn't do a basic sum?

Lifeisabeach09 · 11/03/2020 19:53

YANBU.
Not selling you booze because a toddler is with you is taking the rules to a ridiculous level.
I'd twitter the supermarket explaining what happened and pointing out that the rules (or staff) lack common sense.

PleaseStopCrying · 11/03/2020 19:57

It definitely sounds like they have been caught selling and have had extra training.

I'm staggered that the machine didn't do it for them but even so even the worst mathematian couldn't work out how to do 20 (the current year) - 16 (age to buy lottery ticket) in their head. Confused

lyralalala · 11/03/2020 19:58

I would assume you are particularly young looking and that they've had an issue with a mystery shopper or dodgy sale recently and are all being super careful.

Babybel90 · 11/03/2020 19:59

Yes, jobsworths. I’d be writing to the manager to complain because they were being totally over the top.

DreamInLavender · 11/03/2020 20:00

I just can't imagine being so foolish

When did shops stop serving alcohol to parents?

Mayaaaaa · 11/03/2020 20:05

Jesus wept. Can non of you people agreeing OP is reasonable but think of one reason the person might have been unsure or struggling?

PleaseStopCrying · 11/03/2020 20:11

Honestly if you are serving on the kiosk which is mostly used by people who buy cigarettes and lottery tickets then anyone who might struggle should probably preempt this situation arising. If they cant work it out then its not to much to ask that they use common sense and write it on a post it and stick it by the till before starting their shift or ask a nearby colleague. You don't expect customers to wait for your manager to finish their lunch thats just plain daft.

Iooselipssinkships · 11/03/2020 20:11

Are you near the year of being just legal for the lottery?

Mayaaaaa · 11/03/2020 20:14

And how do we know its lack if common sense?

Maybe the employee has a hidden disability. The store, very well may have put them in a shit position. I worked for asda. It happens. People put in a job that doesnt suit because disabilities.

Not sure how the OP being rude, really helps the person behind the till that is struggling.

Optimist1 · 11/03/2020 20:18

If you're old enough to buy alcohol (18), how are you within a year of minimum age to buy a lottery ticket (16)? Or are you not in UK?

JKScot4 · 11/03/2020 20:18

What age are you? Are you incredibly youthful?
You can buy a lottery ticket at 16!!

PleaseStopCrying · 11/03/2020 20:21

Maybe the employee has a hidden disability

Ok say they did have a hidden disability and were put in a shit situation I'm still not sure why they could not ask their colleague for the year?

Yes its not great to be rude to people and I'm sure the OP feels bad about it but neither employee was doing their job properly so whilst not great its easy to see why the OP got frustrated.

YakkityYakYakYak · 11/03/2020 20:23

I probably would have said the same thing.

Sounds like they have just done some training on it and are all going OTT. Shame they didn’t train them how to calculate whether someone is old enough. Confused

Mayaaaaa · 11/03/2020 20:25

Ok say they did have a hidden disability and were put in a shit situation I'm still not sure why they could not ask their colleague for the year?

Completely missing the point. Theres potential that the person, has a hidden disability. What you may think is reasonable le may not have occured to them. They might have been told 'if unsure, run past the manager' and felt they had to do that , because that was the rule.

There was a thread here a few weeks ago where the OP was waiting a kiosk in a supermarket. The server clearly had (according to OP) OCD and was taking ages to put the money away. Another customer got shitty with him. And almost all agreed the man getting shitty was a dick.

But a woman being rude, without thinking about why this person maybe doing something unusual, is fine?

Where does she say she feels bad? She is annoyed at the 'sheer stupidity'.

Soontobe60 · 11/03/2020 20:25

You were incredibly rude to the assistant. No excuse for that.
