AIBU to say the health minister should be sacked?

I mean the one who ignored her own symptoms and her own department's advice and has now potentially infected Parliament and other colleagues and the 50 possibly elderly constituents she met with on Saturday for a cup of tea.

How flippant, blasé and irresponsible can some in our government get? What is the matter with them?

The symptoms could have been anything on Friday ,my dh had symptoms last week resembling the corona virus it turns out he had a UTI ,I felt a bit awful few days later achey, shivering etc after a few paracetamol and a good night sleep I was fine ,I doubt she deliberately caught the virus and deliberately went out to infect her constituents , the virus is all over the UK at the moment I know people on mumsnet hate the Tories but I don't think you can blame them for the Corona virus !Hmm

muchtoosoon · 11/03/2020 21:17

Current health advice is only to self isolate if you have symptoms and have been in contact with someone at risk. it's not working though is it? Presumably she didn't deliberately go out to potential infect people? It sounds like she had a bit of a cold, but hadn't, to her knowledge been in contact with someone at risk/ carrying coved-19. So followed gov. Advice and carried on. So that advice is clearly not working! It reminds me of Lord Kitchener who sent troops to die in the Gallipoli campaign, because he refused to believe the troops were dying....genuine genius that one no arrogance whatsoever!

Ukraine. 1 case. In lockdown. No worries. Someone in charge has balls. I'm sure they're delightful, but Boris has been using his balls for something else ...

But what happens when they come out of lockdown and it starts to spread again? Lockdown again? For how long?
"lockdown" at the moment seems like a meaningless buzzword

Jillyhilly · 11/03/2020 21:32

The medical advice is not to put the entire country into lockdown right now, Marshmello. It is a very difficult and complex problem, and it’s possible that the Ukrainian response of which you’re such a fan might turn out to be the wrong one. You realise that just because something feels like the right thing to do doesn’t actually mean that the evidence suggests it’s the right thing to do, yes?

Thisisworsethananticpated · 11/03/2020 21:34

Way harsh YABU

Jillyhilly · 11/03/2020 21:37

But what happens when they come out of lockdown and it starts to spread again?

Exactly, and my layman’s understanding is that this is why the “just put everyone into lockdown” knee jerk response is just wrong. Some clever bod was in the radio explaining a) how difficult it is to do and b) that you have to get the timing right with something like this so as to avoid another cycle of infection, or some tho like that.

Marshmello · 11/03/2020 21:38

No seriously, it's cool. Sorry I offended you all. Of course I'm a total idiot. We'll just wait and see. 👌

I guess we will all see how great Ukraine does, whether they become the one truly CV19 free country in the world.

Thisismytimetoshine · 11/03/2020 21:41

Your friend must be a bit simple if she felt safer in Italy.

TSSDNCOP · 11/03/2020 21:44

Still waiting for your source about what ND after Friday.

You’re a scaremonger OP. Not cool.

SnipSnipMrBurgess · 11/03/2020 21:51

If your friend felt safer in Italy, why did she come back? Has she notified everyone she has been in contact with that she could have it, having been in Italy?

She then put another friend at risk by getting in her car? Maybe she should be sacked or brought to justice?

ScrumptiousBears · 11/03/2020 21:53

Thing is OP it's not as simple as just shut the schools. To do this one working parent per child has to stop working which will massively impact on day to day lives. We would still expect food, water, electric, gas, TV, Internet, telephone, bins emptied, emergency services etc and the people who run them may also have children so can't work. Minus those who are sick and everything goes down the pan. Not everyone can work from home to look after their children. It'll have to be carefully balanced.

Marshmello · 12/03/2020 05:56

Well it looks like they are going to take action now with the schools. 'Cobra' meeting today (yes we are all in a James Bond movie) ...

I didn't mean to sound harsh and provocative over Nadine. The information I read - which came from partly a quote from herself - was that she did have tangible symptoms by the Thursday, but carried on for three days.

Everyone just has to be vigilant I guess. Nobody wants this. It's all strange. :(

awaynboilyurheid · 12/03/2020 08:01

Totally agree op If anyone should be aware of early symptoms, surely it should be the health minister! A few days before this my daughter had similar symptoms is now self isolating after seeking medical advice. I would have expected ND to be far more informed than my daughter.
Unbelievable that this govt are so slow in implementing any sort of preventative policies when we can all see what’s going on in a Italy.

ChewChewIsMySpiritAnimal · 12/03/2020 08:08

8 deaths out of a population of 60 million + people.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 12/03/2020 08:20

Well it looks like they are going to take action now with the schools. 'Cobra' meeting today (yes we are all in a James Bond movie) ... Well, they are having a COBR meeting... and it is all following the extant procedure for such emergencies. Thery are doing what any and every UK (and many other UN countries) government would do in the same position.

After this the SOP may change. Until then, they go by the guidelines set and WHO advice. Which is precisely what they have been doing.

As for ND, she did nothing wrong. She went about her daily round, did her job. She was unfortunate in having met someone with undiagnosed infection in February (most likely), when there were a grand total of 13 known cases in the UK only ONE WAS IN LONDON!!

BadCatDirtyCat · 12/03/2020 08:26

@ChewChewIsMySpiritAnimal the graphs show we are about 2 weeks behind Italy which now has 827 deaths... The government needs to working hard to change our trajectory but so far it really doesn't seem to be happening!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 12/03/2020 08:29

I actually agree OP,if the reports are true she felt ill and continued to go to work. She should've self isolated as she didn't know if it was Corona or just a cold, that's the whole point.

BertiesLanding · 12/03/2020 09:26

They say cases will reach a peak in two weeks.

If you listened to Matt Hancock addressing Parliament yesterday, it will peak in about two months, not weeks.

All the while, fear makes us angry. It is going to be very, VERY hard not to lash out. Nor to think rationally - particularly when the vast majority of people will be reactive, rather that responsive. Keeping one's own mind in all of this will be a valuable resource.

x2boys · 12/03/2020 09:27

The vast majority of deaths are elderly with underlying health conditions ,which does make me fearful for my 78 yr old mum who has a number of health conditions ,however pneumonia is what killed my Grandma 20 odd years ago (she was 89) ,so there is always a risk with the most vulnerable .

Blondewolf · 12/03/2020 15:08

I don't think I'm lashing out. I just think that we have all been told to self isolate with any symptoms. And a health minister carried on mingling for three days, with symptoms. As someone here said, the whole point of (responsible) self isolation with symptoms is exactly that you won't know if it's just a cold or if it's the virus.

A point seemingly totally missed or ignored by a health minister. I wasn't angry. I was flabbergasted.
