AIBU to say the health minister should be sacked?

I mean the one who ignored her own symptoms and her own department's advice and has now potentially infected Parliament and other colleagues and the 50 possibly elderly constituents she met with on Saturday for a cup of tea.

How flippant, blasé and irresponsible can some in our government get? What is the matter with them?

Sorry she met 59-odd constituents on Sat. For cups of tea.

If I got fever and a dry cough it probably wouldn't occur to me I might have caught it!

Neverender · 11/03/2020 20:11

YABU the reason we keep giving this horrible virus to each other is because it's like a cold. YABVU.

Neverender · 11/03/2020 20:12

...because that's her JOB!

TSSDNCOP · 11/03/2020 20:13

The source of your information is what? Nowhere can I see that she did anything public after feeing symptomatic on Friday.

lljkk · 11/03/2020 20:14

6 deaths & 456 cases so far OP. On that basis, OP, you want these things:

All schools closed
Anyone with any relevant symptom to self-isolate until... until when? really, what is your safe threshold?

Do you feel the same way about seasonal flu which requires 2500 or so people to be hospitalised each year? That everyone should self-isolate to try to prevent that.

GrolliffetheDragon · 11/03/2020 20:14

Here it's like they're just waiting for everyone to get it. Wtf? It didn't need to be inevitable.

Aren't they trying to avoid a spike next winter? Virus is here now, there will be an unknown number with mild symptoms or asymptomatic and even if we'd managed to eradicate it completely, unless the rest of the world did the same it would be back.

TSSDNCOP · 11/03/2020 20:18

Exactly lijkk can you even imagine what a lockdown would look like? Shops, cinemas, pubs etc closed. Roads blocked to reduce movement. Troops and police in the street to limit movements. Domestic violence rocketing as people are forced to stay indoors. And exactly how long would this continue? And what happens when we are all allowed back out again?

muchtoosoon · 11/03/2020 20:24

8 deaths now. It's just the tip of the iceberg. Also if an MP caught corona and didn't know, because she was not deemed at risk; doesn't that show that containment is not working? I bet hundreds of people have now been infected, but it will be too little too late.

I'm sure if 8 children had died of this, there would be much more outrage. But I think this shows we're an ageist society, who don't care about our elderly population.

bumblenbean · 11/03/2020 20:24

As PP said I don’t understand the testing policy. How do they determine who should or shouldn’t be tested if exhibiting symptoms? Unless they’ve been in contact with an infected person/in a place of outbreak surely the assumption would be cold/flu?

A couple of people I know have corona like symptoms but neither have been offered a test. I Realise it would be a logistical nightmare to test everyone with cold/flu symptoms, but It all seems a bit arbitrary...

muchtoosoon · 11/03/2020 20:28

Btw no I don't think she should be sacked, it's not her fault she didnt realise she had the virus, but it does high light that the method of containing it, and current advice is not working.

HeresMe · 11/03/2020 20:33

Exactly lijkk can you even imagine what a lockdown would look like? Shops, cinemas, pubs etc closed. Roads blocked to reduce movement. Troops and police in the street to limit movements.

You do realise that in Italy people.are still going to work, public transport is still running, shops still open, bars and restaurants still open, the lockdown is more about stopping people leaving regions.

Marshmello · 11/03/2020 20:34

Listen, there's no point me saying anything. Everyone with any grip (including the UK govt) are predicting an infection curve similar to Italy. They say cases will reach a peak in two weeks. If so, lots more people will get ill, lots more older and weaker people will die. And then what? Why a peak then? Because then when it's got bad enough, they will activate lockdown.

There's no point me saying anything more because you're all mostly saying oh what bollocks, what an over reaction, it's just like a cold, etc.

There is stacks of info out there. And if you're interested, a Stanford report said it's often symptomless for 5 days or so, then when you get the fever and dry cough and chest pain, you're already dealing with 50%' lung fibrosis. They suggest every morning holding your breath for 10 seconds and checking it is possible and it feels ok.

There was a video today online - from an Italian actor in Naples. He was in his house, with the dead body of his young epileptic sister. She had died of Covid-19 about 4 days earlier. Nobody would visit the house and collect her body. Three older relatives were already coughing. Omg. Why do you lot think we are immune? Just because we had Brexit??

Let's just see. I hope, as you all think, me and the world health authorities and our own health experts who are deeply concerned are all just over-reacting, and you who are bothered about the weird inconvenience of not going to Sainsbury's for two weeks are right. I really hope so. Obviously that would be far better and I'd love to be proved wrong. : (

I'm worried about CV19 in places like Afghanistan and Yemen. Not in UK, though.

PHE COVID dashboard doesn't yet say 8 deaths.

AIBU to say the health minister should be sacked?
Marshmello · 11/03/2020 20:37

Unless they’ve been in contact with an infected person/in a place of outbreak surely the assumption would be cold/flu?

That was days ago. For over a week now people have been being infected in the UK who haven't been anywhere or seemingly met anybody. That's when it becomes a real problem.

If everyone who'd been to Italy at half term had been forcibly quarantined, we'd probably be ok now. But they weren't and we aren't.

PurpleDaisies · 11/03/2020 20:38

I've been taking measures for nearly two weeks. And I'm not a health minister. I'm just a mother and scared.

How do you know nadine dorries wasn’t taking the measures recommended by the government? She is also a mother.

Boris Johnson is accused of playing 'roulette with lives' as UK's EIGHTH coronavirus patient dies: PM is urged to close schools, ban football matches and order country to work from home as WHO declares pandemic

How do you know nadine dorries wasn’t taking the measures recommended by the government?

If she'd have been taking her own department's recommended action, when she got a dry cough and a fever and chest pain she'd have self-isolated and called 111.

OP posts:
MissDemelzaCarne · 11/03/2020 20:41

Current health advice is only to self isolate if you have symptoms and have been in contact with someone at risk.

lljkk · 11/03/2020 20:46

"when you get the fever and dry cough and chest pain, you're already dealing with 50%' lung fibrosis"

has been tagged as Fake News.

I'm still looking for "Standard report to hold breath for 10 seconds". I've seen that advice on my Facebook but it's not got a source.

lljkk · 11/03/2020 20:48

oh here it is, Bless Mother Jones. The "Hold breath for 10 seconds" is also Fake News.

I actually find it easy to believe some folk have got bodies in house, but I may as well check that one too...

Mary1935 · 11/03/2020 20:49

What about the constituents who she talked too or the people she shook hands with or interacted with before she came symptomatic.

I’m curious why she was tested? Are the people she’s had contact with going to be tested or shall they wash their hands and call 111.
I hope the smug bastards in parliament come down with it.
Then they may act.

lljkk · 11/03/2020 20:52

Delay in collecting the body of sister in Naples looks sadly real. :(
So that is what happens in quarantines.
Am pretty sure it's happened in Wuhan, too.

If everyone who'd been to Italy at half term had been forcibly quarantined, we'd probably be ok now...

Would that have stopped the cases now getting into Afghanistan and Washington State, and prevented CV19 ever spreading from those places to UK? I wish the decisions were so simple.

DoubleAction · 11/03/2020 20:55

Yes because it wouldn't have arrived in UK from anywhere else lljkk. You've just explained exactly why big restrictions couldn't have been imposed. How long can/could the country/population tolerate it for?
