SIL laughed at the damage

SIL brought her son down today (he’s 6) and he knocked a cup over which spilt coffee on my tablecloth. I picked it up and it was dripping coffee and SIL was practically crying with laughter. I asked what was funny and she said “that hideous table cloth! Where did you get it?” !!! So basically it’s ok that it was damaged because it was “hideous” to start with??

Don't invite her over again. She is just rude.

TheReluctantCountess · 10/03/2020 17:48

How rude of her.

Largeyellowdaffodil · 10/03/2020 17:49

A tablecloth will wash surely? So an accident rather than 'damage"

redwoodmazza · 10/03/2020 17:49

Say 'You gave it to me!'

Hereforthenamethreads · 10/03/2020 17:50

That's rude. She's rude. I'd let it go as she is a relative and it isn't worth calling out over a tablecloth. I'd stew over it for a while anyway.

livefornaps · 10/03/2020 17:50

You should've spilt coffee on her top and then lol-ed about it being hideous

OldUnit · 10/03/2020 17:51

Go outside and back into her car. When her face drops, laugh and say 'what? That hideous old thing...?'

NewPapaGuinea · 10/03/2020 17:51

Probably reacted that way to ease her conscience that her DS damaged it.

Nonnymum · 10/03/2020 17:55

That's rude. I dont think the child should feel bad about spilling the drunk because accidents happen but she was very rude to laugh about it and say the table cloth is horrible.

5zeds · 10/03/2020 17:56

You are allowed to tell her you think she’s rude.

Clangus00 · 10/03/2020 17:59

Hardly damaged. Just bung it in the wash.
But yes, definitely a cf.

flumposie · 10/03/2020 17:59

Rude.

balonzz · 10/03/2020 18:02

Buy her the identical tablecloth for next Christmas.

SmileyClare · 10/03/2020 18:05

As a rule of thumb, if you're crying with laughter and the other person is looking pissed off, then you should cease laughing immediately and calm the fuck down.

Can you describe the Hideous Tablecloth or provide a pic? Just out of interest.Smile

MrsAJ27 · 10/03/2020 18:07

Rude bitch!

Zaphodsotherhead · 10/03/2020 18:09

She's rude, but that IS what tablecloths are for - so that tabletops don't get ruined. It will wash.

She has absolutely no right to criticise your taste in table decorations though.

mumwon · 10/03/2020 18:14

soak in cold soapy water (don't put salt in - salt is what use to make dyes "stick") for all she knew it could have been given to you by someone you cared for & just because she doesn't like it doesn't mean that you have to agree - tastes differ - very bad manners - besides it could also have stained carpet or damaged table - yep real funny - no seriously rude

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 10/03/2020 18:18

I agree that split coffee is not something to wail or cry over but yes, she was rude as heck to say that.
I'd be tempted to say similar back when at her house....

Rhubarbpeony · 10/03/2020 18:19

It’s not damaged Hmm but your SIL was rude to call it hideous.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 10/03/2020 18:19

Also, "crying with laughter" over a split coffee?
she doesnt sound like she has a very "developed" sense of humour if thats the kind of thing she finds "hilarious" good grief

AnneOfCloves · 10/03/2020 18:21

We definitely need a photo of the tablecloth Grin

Doodlesquah1 · 10/03/2020 18:21

Really really rude! Wtf!

Chewbecca · 10/03/2020 18:33

Can we see it before opining please?!

Apolloanddaphne · 10/03/2020 18:34

I need to see the offending tablecloth before I decide.

Devlesko · 10/03/2020 18:36

Rude bitch, I'd have had to say so to her face. But that's me.
I hope it isn't damaged. i have a couple I'd hate anything to happen to. I use them but choose wisely when to.
