SIL laughed at the damage

SIL brought her son down today (he’s 6) and he knocked a cup over which spilt coffee on my tablecloth. I picked it up and it was dripping coffee and SIL was practically crying with laughter. I asked what was funny and she said “that hideous table cloth! Where did you get it?” !!! So basically it’s ok that it was damaged because it was “hideous” to start with??

YABU to even use table cloths daily in a house with young children. If you don’t want to risk something being damaged, store it away because young children are little whirlwinds of destruction.

Your SIL's comment was rude.
Your tablecloth isn't damaged, you can wash it.

Is your table cloth pink lace edged with brown silk with Elvis weaved into it with green wool? (Actually, that would probably make it a difficult item to wash.so fair enough on the damage comment.)

QueenArseClangers · 11/03/2020 07:41

OP’s tablecloth.

As someone said, upthread, pictures or it didn't happen! Grin

@QueenArseClangers oh that old thing? Grin

Is it my imagination or has there been a rise in people posting new threads and disappearing with no further comment recently?

FWIW SIL is an arsehole but I also want to see the tablecloth.

Onemorehitandillcrumble · 11/03/2020 08:44

A tablecloth will wash surely? So an accident rather than 'damage"
^but she was rude about your table cloth. Nervous reaction to her child making a mess maybe? As in she was trying to laugh it off as it not being serious, because it will just wash, and you were acting like it was a serious issue.

Fluffybutter · 11/03/2020 09:49

Bloody hell .. I can’t actually believe the stuff people post on here ..
you thought she was rude so what is a strangers take on it going to change ?

annamie · 11/03/2020 10:33

Are people being thick or disingenuous? Not all stains wash out.

And @fluffybutter, ODFOD with your faux disbelief. OP can post whatever she wants.

But that's what tablecloths are FOR, protecting the table! You wouldn't put a valuable, very much cared for heirloom cloth on the table if you were expecting a child visitor and if you did you sure as hell wouldn't put a cup of coffee on it!

Tablecloths get stained. It's what they do.

SIL was still rude for laughing at your tablecloth and not apologising though, OP. But kids are clumsy, it's not damage, it was just an accident.

Keep grandma's hand woven lace on a shelf, not the table.

chatterbugmegastar · 11/03/2020 10:53

Make sure to give her the exact same table cloth for her birthday
