Are high heels used to make women weaker?

angell84 · 10/03/2020 14:06

I am in a cafe having a cup of tea with a friend.

A small woman stumbled in, in high heels that she could barely walk in. She was with a large domineering man - he was striding ahead, and she could barely keep up.

I looked at her, and I had a thought that I have had a few times.

Why do women wear high heels? And Why do the fashion industry keep pushing high heels at women?

They are uncomfortableto wear, they physically hurt us in the long run- I looked at a scientific study online before I wrote this. It said that wearing high heels weaken women's muscles.

And they make us incredibly weak and vulnerable - we are barely able to walk - let alone run, wearing them. I.e it suits men with bad intentions - for us to wear them.

Does anyone else think this?

Nobody is attacking anybody. Some disagree with you. Did you just post because you wanted lots of people to agree with you?

angell84
don't pretend your OP was purely in concern for the health of women...
Your attitude towards women is vile.

ScarlettBlaize · 11/03/2020 13:06

@Reginabambina
I wear heels daily because I find them more comfortable than flat shoes

Wow, so you wear heels to the gym/to go running?

Never seen anyone doing that- impressed!

ffswhatnext · 11/03/2020 13:06

But P1nk wasn't attacking you.

You have linked heels to deaths and it is no different to the old short skirt arguments of justifying rape.

I have said this more than once on this thread. I believe others have also said similar, not just P1nk.

If this upsets you, think about those victims who do blame themselves and how devastated they will feel, hearing well if she hadn't worn heels X wouldn't have happened.

If you feel this is attacking you personally, report away. But I cannot stand by and not say hang on a minute, are you for real? This type of attitude should be challenged more

UYScuti · 11/03/2020 13:08

I think high heels can look good but I never ever wear them, as far as I'm concerned every time I have to walk is an opportunity for some exercise so I like to walk as fast as possible, I'm also very prone to going over on my ankles so high heels would be completely counterproductive for me.
I value my musculoskeletal integrity much more highly than I value looking sexy, besides I have good legs from all the sport I do, I don't need high heels

JustInCaseCakeHappens · 11/03/2020 13:08

Wtf do we wear shoes that hurt our feet?
I don't know, but that has nothing to do with heels. I don't wear shoes that hurt. (My DcMartens did to start with to be fair, they don't anymore Grin )

I don't know about you, but I don't live in a war zone. I don't need to be able to escape in a run throughout the day. I wear perfectly appropriate shoes for what I am doing.

I can't run in my wellies either... seriously the list is endless. DH cannot run in flip flops I will tell him to bin them because they make him look weak.

There are loads, including males in heels in the gym.

Reginabambina · 11/03/2020 13:41

@ScarlettBlaize I don’t run unless I’m running for the train which is totally doable in heels and I normally do shoeless activities in the gym. But my walking boots for example aren’t flat. I’m pretty sure that it’s rare to find completely flat activewear shoes unless you are getting soft bottomed rock climbing type shoes. The closest thing I have to flat she’s are some ergonomic type shoes but obviously they have a bit of a heel.

I see, so when you say you don't wear 'flat' shoes, you don't mean what everyone else means by 'flats' i.e. not heels?

You mean literally completely flat shoes with no raised sole at all?

I find your use of language very confusing. You said you find 'heels more comfortable than flats'. I assumed you meant high heels vs. not high heels.

To clarify: I wear shoes like this in the gym. Is this what you mean by 'not flat' shoes?

That is one of the funniest and wrongest things I've ever had addressed to me Grin

I train in the gym 6 or 7 days a week. Have done my entire life. There are usually around 100 other people in the gym while I'm there.

At a conservative estimate, I reckon I've seen maybe 5000 different people training in gyms, probably more, and probably a similar number of people running outdoors.

Would you like to take a wild guess as to how many of them were wearing heels like the ones in the video you posted?

Bloody hell GrinGrinGrin

ffswhatnext · 11/03/2020 14:25

I can guess probably none lol.

There are loads. There is a guy who had been doing it for years, and he's amazing.

Reading through the thread, I kept laughing at the 'oh but you cannot do X and they restrict Y etc' because I've seen the videos.
And I think fuck, I cannot stay on my feet wearing trainers on a treadmill, that is some talent.

By I suppose those filming them, were somehow forced by the designers to clad heels and work out.

Jessie9323 · 11/03/2020 14:27

Nonsense. I know plenty of women, myself included that love the way wearing heels makes them feel. Not for anyone else

Vulpine · 11/03/2020 14:28

My friends who have worn them for years have feet in a right mess

ScarlettBlaize · 11/03/2020 14:32

Hang on. Are you actually, seriously, genuinely trying to claim that 'loads' of people wear high heels to run on treadmills in the gym?

Like - not for a funny video. But you actually think that people do this in real life? Really??!

Fucking hell, I didn't think anything could make me genuinely laugh today. Thank you Grin

ffswhatnext · 11/03/2020 14:40

There are some people who seriously do this and not for a piss-take video. There's some around that film seriously to show how they are not limited by their heels. That was just the first one that searched up.

There was also a ballet dancer who went viral for his heels video.

ffswhatnext · 11/03/2020 14:41

But even the ones that are taking the piss are showing well actually it is possible to do various things in heels without being hindered in some way.

ScarlettBlaize · 11/03/2020 14:44

@ffswhatnext

Sorry, your posts still aren't clear. Just to be totally clear - you are actually claiming that 'loads of people' run on treadmills wearing high heels?

Like, for real? You actually think this?

fuck me!

Rhubarbpeony · 11/03/2020 14:50

@angell84 instead of dismissing the (perfectly valid and calmly expressed) posts of other people by claiming you’re being attacked, why don’t you engage with them? Whether or not victim blaming was your intention that’s exactly what your posts have appeared to be, and if that’s something that upsets you to hear the solution is for you to learn how not to victim blame, not for other people to refrain from pointing it out to you.

Reginabambina · 11/03/2020 14:56

@Scarlett I do normally wear heels that are high because I find them more comfortable for ordinary day to day wear than say shoes with a small heel but in terms of flat shoes in mean it in the normal sense of the word I.e. a shoe without an adequate heel. Shoes like ballet flats, converse etc are flats and are pretty bad for you. Shoes with a heel are not flats, shoes with heels that are large enough to be impractical/uncomfortable for your average woman I would consider high (above 3 or 4 inches I guess). I prefer high heels though, but I think that may be because I am quite tall and have large feet. I’d never wear flat shoes though unless I wasn’t going to do any walking in them, same goes for very high heels (over 6 inches).

Reginabambina · 11/03/2020 14:58

Sorry, re Nike I don’t know. I own a pair of Nike and they’re pretty uncomfortable but I think that’s more to do with ankle support. I don’t think they’re so flat as to not have enough of a heel to support your arch surely? I have no idea how much of an elevation they have because I don’t tend to wear mine for longer than a few minutes at a time.

FizzyLimes · 11/03/2020 14:59

Hate heels, so uncomfortable.
I bought a couple of pairs when I restarted dating. They are unworn in the bottom of the wardrobe.

Reginabambina · 11/03/2020 14:59

I’ve definitely never seen anyone in the gym in heels!

ffswhatnext · 11/03/2020 15:01

If no-one was running on treadmills, then there wouldn't be people making videos.
Doesn't matter if there's 10 or 100's.
It can and has been done for real. No special effects so fake them in heels running on treadmills.

The professional ballet dancer, I doubt he went from trainers straight to the 6in heels. Same with the others. They would have practised.

Eckhart · 11/03/2020 15:04

So your point is that we have videos proving that some people can run in heels, is that right?

ScarlettBlaize · 11/03/2020 15:11

@Reginabambina I’ve definitely never seen anyone in the gym in heels!

Well, quite! Nor has anyone else, ever, apart from @ffswhatnext apparently Grin !!!!
