To think ignoring candidates after two interviews is fucking rude?

Had two interviews a few weeks ago with a huge multinational, at their request, all fine, then complete radio silence. Not via a recruiter. I have chased politely for feedback (once via email and once via voice message) and nothing, not even a form email. I get that people are busy, I get that decisions take time. But AIBU to think even if you're short on time, or courtesy, you must realise it give a terrible impression of your company?

There is no good reason not to at least send a message along the lines of 'due to staff absence (or whatever), we are unable to make a decision before X date.' Or at least send a basic thanks but no thanks email and wait to see if the candidate actually asks for feedback rather than being lazy/rude

Yorkshiremum17 · 09/03/2020 22:05

Just been through an interview process with 5 x 1/2 hour Phone/video calls with head office in the states, followed by a 2 hour interview in the UK, followed by a further half hour phone call, all really positive, followed by a 2 week radio silence, told I haven't got the job, happy to give me feedback and then nothing. I chased 3 times to no avail. It is just rude. They spent all that time courting me just to ghost me!

FurrySlipperBoots · 09/03/2020 22:08

I've been job hunting for 2.5 years now, and I'm so TIRED! Tired of jumping through hoops for all the different agencies, applying for jobs, 'putting myself out there' and falling flat on my face time and again. I must have applied for, maybe 300 jobs? It's starting to make me feel really low. And the being ghosted OP, especially after you're pretty sure you've got the job and are at the finalising stage, is so wearing I know.

starfishmummy · 09/03/2020 22:10

@eightytwenty could be right about the recruitment feeeze.

That happened to DH. He was in a redundancy situation and had interviews for 2 jobs *well he had more but all rejections). The one he really wanted didn't get back to him so he accepted the other when it was offered. Months later he heard from the preferred one who said they were in the middle of a recruitment freeze and would he still be interested if they were in a position to offer. He was and eventually they did offer. Many many years later he still works for them.

Chewbecca · 09/03/2020 22:11

You might be in 2nd place & they’re currently negotiating with 1st so don’t write it off yet.

Mlou32 · 09/03/2020 22:11

Very rude. Just be thankful that you've got their measure now. I would try and get that managing directors details and give him a bit of feedback on their HR department btw. I'm actually going through something similar with a company that I've recently left, both HR and the branch manager are shocking and I think the owner would be livid if he found out what they were really like. I fully intend on contacting him and filling him in.

pinkprosseco · 09/03/2020 22:12

About 6 years ago I went through two interviews and a trip around the headquarters office to meet the team. All went well and they said they'd be in touch with the formal offer. After a week I contacted the HR director who I'd met at interview and left a message. Nothing. Emailed for feedback. Nothing. Fast forward a few years and they emailed me at my new company asking to come in and showcase their training product. I made a decision not to explore it any further as they had proved to be unprofessional. Karma.

Dinosforall · 09/03/2020 22:13

@eightytwenty and @starfishmummy I would love to believe it's a CV-induced freeze but suspect it's most likely they're waiting for choice #1 to sign the paperwork

Every company I've ever dealt with has something in common: HR are shit.
Let's be honest, the brightest and the best don't want to work in HR. They're in marketing or operations or product development or whatever. HR is full of second raters.

twinmum2007 · 09/03/2020 22:14

YANBU. The standard of recruiters in this country is shocking. I could fill several threads with tales of how sh*ily DH has been treated over the past few months. One interviewer had flown in from New York that morning and was jet lagged as hell. After 15 mins they tried to wrap things up & had to be reminded that they'd asked him to prepare a detailed presentation.

Doyoumind · 09/03/2020 22:14

Given that you have had two interviews and assuming the second was the final stage, I think it is possible that the job has been offered to someone but the paperwork isn't signed and they are keeping you hanging until they are confident they can say no. I would say this is more likely to be the case if you keep contacting them and no one can speak to you or get back to you. Sorry if that sounds negative. I'm just speaking from experience of both job hunting and hiring. I even had a verbal offer once and then nothing in writing and it came to nothing. Never did find out what happened.

Emmelina · 09/03/2020 22:14

If you’ve got to interview stage at all (never mind multiple interviews!) I would definitely expect them to let me know I hadn’t got it.

SarahAndQuack · 09/03/2020 22:14

But ... so if you believe they're waiting for the first choice to sign paperwork, what are you complaining about?

SarahAndQuack · 09/03/2020 22:16

I mean, I am sure you could email them to clarify. 'Hello, I am a massive prima donna and can't cope with being the second choice. Should I not be your first choice, just count me out of the running'.

That would make life a lot easier for anyone third or fourth in the lists.

Dinosforall · 09/03/2020 22:17

@Disquieted1 I must admit I wouldn't like to be judged by some of our HR department! (In particular the one who said it was too complicated to explain the ins and outs of shared parental leave and to go away and read up on it myself)

twinmum2007 · 09/03/2020 22:18

@FurrySlipperBoots
I feel your pain. DH in same boat. It's horrible.

Dinosforall · 09/03/2020 22:22

@SarahandQuack I meant of the reasons why they could be postponing a response as opposed to having just forgotten about me/decided not to bother responding.

Although the one time I knowingly took a job being their second choice it all went to shit so it's not just about stroking my ego.

Confused

Ok then.

Life is going to be very hard for you, if you always look at sensible reasons why people do things and then decide to seek an insult.

eaglejulesk · 09/03/2020 22:38

I've only had this from one business after an interview, but I am so tired of applying for jobs and hearing absolutely nothing back! In this day it is so easy to send an email to let an applicant know they have been unsuccessful. To hear nothing makes one wonder if they actually even received the application (I'm sure they have, but all the same..).

What this tells me is that they are totally unprofessional, and as some of them provide a service I could require at some time they can be sure I won't be using them based on the image they have projected.

KatyaZamolodchikova · 09/03/2020 22:42

I’m still waiting to find out if I got a job I interviewed for two years ago! I had two interviews and the second one included a presentation that they asked for a copy of because they liked the content so much. I chased up three times, but after more than two years it is safe to assume I was not successful. And I work in HR. Shocking.

february08baby · 09/03/2020 22:46

I had two interviews last year for two different companies and was unsuccessful for both.

The unsuccessful email said it wasn't their policy to give feedback which I found ridiculous as I could maybe understand saying that at the application stage, but after an interview you deserve to know why not!

Its very rude, especially when you spend time, travel, money, effort etc preparing for it.

Dinosforall · 09/03/2020 22:48

SarahandQuack Hmm I've managed fine so far thanks

The point is, I don't know! I would love to believe they just haven't got all their ducks in a row yet (for any reason) but the sensible part of me thinks that's probably just giving myself false hope.

BrioLover · 09/03/2020 22:49

That's very rude. I work in recruitment for a very large multinational company (I do senior hires) and wouldn't dream of doing this to someone.

onlinelinda · 09/03/2020 22:56

Shockingly rude, and actually taking advantage. They've had your time and annual leave, and given literally nothing back.

Donkeytail · 09/03/2020 22:58

Seriously rude. This happened to dh, 3 interviews then nothing. He only found out he didn't get it because a colleague of his did. He emailed asking for feedback and was ignored.
