DH making a racket in the car

CoronaMona · 08/03/2020 11:24

I can’t stand noise and get stressed out with loud or repetitive noises especially if I’m in a confined space. Our dog barks in the car and it drives me insane but obviously I know she’s a dog and isn’t doing it to be a pain. I just have to try and shut it out.

When she does this however DH has started making loud, high pitched peacock noises. It drives me fucking crazy and of course winds the dog up more. I tell him to stop and he just continues as if he can’t hear me. I ended up proper screaming at him yesterday because the barking and the peacock noises was literally making me feel like my head was going to explode.

I don’t know what to do. I can’t not travel with him and he’s just not listening to me about this yet normally he’s a lovely man, no abuse ... no other issues.

I’m actually worried I might flip and end up hitting him. I’m not a violent person at all but the state it gets me into makes me lose my head completely. He thinks it’s funny. I’m not fucking laughing. I’m annoyed. He could stop this.

I get this. I really struggle with noise - it’s not just unpleasant - it is painful.

One option is that you could treat it like a symbol of A Very Big Problem in your marriage. And that you are actually quite worried about his psyche - after all - what type of person does want to cause pain to their spouse?

So you approach him when not in the car and ask why he is choosing to cause you pain. “Does it turn you on - are you a sexual sadist or something?”

He’ll undoubtedly say something like “oh - it was just a joke”.

So you push at this. “Do you find the idea of all people being in pain funny or just me?” “Would it be funny if I broke my arm and was in terrible pain or do you need to cause the pain yourself for it to be funny?” “Am I safe sleeping next to you or might you start hurting me in the night?”

He’ll keep trying to brush it off as “just a bit of fun” and you need to keep saying “but you knew it was distressing me - I just need to understand why you found that funny“.

I really need to know what a peacock sounds like

Google it then.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 08/03/2020 13:23

There's this absolute bell end that I see on the school run with his wife who's loud and shouty, obnoxious and 'look at ME ME ME!' It's absolutely grating.

Anyway, they were driving behind me in the summer and the guy wound down his window and full on barked at a couple walking past making them jump out their skin.
I looked in the review mirror and he was laughing his arse off.

OP, if you drive a large white 4X4 then your husbands a bell.

Stompythedinosaur · 08/03/2020 13:29

That is beyond weird. Surely you've asked him why he does it? I work with children with neurodisability issues, and this sounds like something that might happen when I was driving them.

Assuming he doesn't have a specific issue causing the weird behaviour I wouldn't drive him anywhere unless he apologises and assures you he will stop.

BloggersBlog · 08/03/2020 13:38

@RedRec Most of the 'D' husbands and partners of mumsnetters sound unhinged I couldnt agree more. And not sure why these people with their weird behaviors are called 'D'

There are some weird threads about lately...

IntergalacticSuperstar · 08/03/2020 13:39

If he's lovely, why is he doing this? What's his explanation?

Nanny0gg · 08/03/2020 13:45

For those who haven't yet worked out how to Google...

corythatwas · 08/03/2020 13:46

Imagine a cockerel making the noise of a car alarm.

THis is the best description I have ever read or could ever imagine of a peacock's call.

HellonHeels · 08/03/2020 13:48

I couldn't be with someone who thought it was "fun" to torment a dog. He is a shit.

Stuckandsadintheupsidedown · 08/03/2020 13:48

Jesus my 6 year old wouldn't do this. How horrible for you.
Have you spoken to him about it today?

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 08/03/2020 13:49

Given that the OP hasn't posted since I think we can gather that it's just someone trying to relaunch the modern "DH t-rexing in Asda..."

TheVanguardSix · 08/03/2020 13:51

I grew up with local peacocks. They make this high pitched sort of sound like a child yelling out 'Help' but more like 'haaayyelp, haaayelp'... at least the ones in Southern California do. They roam wildly where I'm from. Someone brought them in from somewhere at the turn of the 20th century. I digress.

Does your husband have a tic or something? Or is he just being 'ha ha funny' and winding up the dog?

Manyminieggs · 08/03/2020 14:05

Wtaf?!

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 08/03/2020 15:19

You may get a better response were you to ask him rather than tell him, the world doesn't revolve round you!

What the fuck! Now, if someone is sitting in a confined space you, you have to ask if they would mind not screeching in your ear? You can not be serious!

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 08/03/2020 15:22

I also can't believe how many adults on here don't know what a peacock sounds like, and seems surprised to learn that peacocks actually make a noise.

Shittodayshottomorrow · 08/03/2020 15:59

He sounds like a wind up merchant
You need to control yourself, you can’t hit people because you don’t like noise, you can’t micro manage the air waves. Sorry maybe some work on tolerance might help.

GruciusMalfoy · 08/03/2020 16:09

Peacocks scream rather than squawk, it's a horrible noise.

YANBU OP. I would really struggle with this too, it most be incredibly distracting, whether that's him or you driving.

EKGEMS · 08/03/2020 17:44

Put him in the trunk and the dog in the seat next to you

Firelink · 08/03/2020 17:52

😂😂😂😂😂

user1457178042 · 08/03/2020 17:57

What's his plumage like?

Summersunandoranges · 08/03/2020 18:18

This would actually really upset me. I don’t like loud noises in confined spaces and some one purposely doing this knowing it would make me feel unwell would probably cause me to punch them in the mouth. I would completely go in to fight or flight mode.

Even thinking about your situation causes me anxiety.

ALongHardWinter · 08/03/2020 18:25

What noise does a peacock make? In my experience, they sound like they are screaming 'Help!'.
I can imagine how annoying this is OP. Sorry but he sounds like a bit of a twat!

Hawkmoth · 08/03/2020 18:37

I have a small repertoire of bird noises. I do not make them in vehicles.

However, I did make the California Quail noise several times yesterday as part of the bargaining process whereby my husband has agreed we can get some.

I'm also a massive twat in case anyone wondered.

Stinkycatbreath · 08/03/2020 19:05

I think its mean to wind the dog up too.

user1494182820 · 08/03/2020 19:16

@JoshArcherStoleMyTractor

This is not on edge. This is a genuine issue and I suffer with it too. Multiple or loud noises cause complete panic and rage. There have been several threads on here recently discussing it and it's not uncommon. Don't be so dismissive of other people.
